Diana Wynne Jones is dead

I don't know if any of you people have read her books but she is my second favorite author and I am sort of wigging out right now. Celebrity deaths usually make me kind of sad in a "shucks it's terrible when people die" way but I really, really loved her work. Her awesome books include:
On which a movie is based, but the movie is totally different so go read the book. It is awesome.
Which is cool for kids but I feel like it speaks to adults a lot, especially parents.
This is great because it has alternate dimensions and magic and a bunch of stuff that takes place at a big fantasy convention. So cool! The sequel to this is also great. I lent someone my copy and I want it baaack.
There are so many other great books of hers and I love them all. If you do too, then let's talk about it. Otherwise I guess we can talk about which dead celebrities have affected us most profoundly. Or how I'm going to lose it even worse when Terry Pratchett goes.

I haven't actually read Howl's Moving Castle but I've read Archer's Goon and it was amazing
I also tried to read another book of hers about a girl who inexplicably becomes some kind of ghost and tries to piece her life back together but it bored me so much I couldn't even finish it; does anyone remember that one?

I had no idea that she was the friend Neil Gaiman mentioned saying goodbye to in a hospice last night. I'm really saddened, and feel so sorry for him.
Quoth, I was absolutely gutted when I heard Terry Pratchett had Alzeimers, the only time bad news about a famous person has hit me as hard as though it had happened to a personal friend, so yeah - I know exactly where you're coming from.

Terry Pratchett is my favorite author so this is one of those things where like... you hear about a bad thing happening to one person and you sort of start preparing yourself for that eventuality and then BLAM this other person kicks it totally unexpectedly
i cannot emphasize enough how i have never been this upset over a celebrity death before
even douglas adams, who i also loved

I just did a search to see if she'd written anything I knew. Turns out, yes, she had. When I was ten I borrowed Archer's Goon and Eight Days of Luke from my local library so often that they eventually just gave them to me. I haven't read those books in years but man...this sucks.

i actually started reading her books as a grown up, i think after i saw the Howl's Moving Castle movie and then found out it was based on a book
i will now devote my life to buying all of her books as i have done with Pratchett

When I was young I had many of the Chrestomanci books read to me, and I learned to read very early just so I could go through books like those and The Hobbit. I'm sad to hear this, because most of my earliest memories revolve around that series.
Aw man. I read all of her books as a teenager. They were really great, and didn't talk down to you like a lot of the stuff out there. She made some really entertaining fantasy worlds. I always loved her 'fantasy world as a tourist destination' concept from the dark lord series. How sad

i loved how she had this whole huge multiverse thing going on that crossed over into a lot of her books
also her general approach to magic as a sort of stubbornness where you will something to happen was very cool

I find it really hard to describe her writing style, and I mean that as a massive compliment
With so many other authors you can point to disparate elements and say "oh yeah, as a whole they're like X or Y" but... I can't really liken her to anyone except Diana Wynne Jones
Man I haven't read her stuff in forever. Gonna go grab some of her books as well as some Brian Jacques I reckon

Oh, I just remembered another one of her books I liked - Black Maria. The titular character had a way of making people do things by specifically asking them not to.
I always thought that was a great comment on the way that mothers and old ladies always do that, and how it is actually kind of magical.

I have only read the 4 earliest Chrestomanci book (and I had no idea there was a 4th and 5th full book released in 05/06 until this very second and must read as soon as possible) but she was a really excellent author.
But yes, her writing style was unusual. I don't think I've ever read anything quite like it.
Fuck fuck fuck. I knew she was sick but it doesn't make this easier
I loved the Chrestomanci and The Dark Lord of Derkholm series and was hoping she would continue on with both of them. I guess I'm just going to have to take solace in the awesome books she's already written.
I loved Diana Wynne Jones as a teenager, I think I read all her books this is terrible
tale of time city, the homeward bounders, fire and hemlock, chestromanci, the spellcoats, her writing was just amazing. She wrote characters that felt so much like real people, and there was never a point where you could catch her merely following forms. I was so excited when I heard that Miyazaki would be doing Howl's Moving Castle although it ended up very different from the book...
anyway I am so thankful for the life of this wonderful person
Man, this sucks. I love Howl's Moving Castle. I was even teaching one of my high level students in Japan by reading it with her. This was just out of the blue for me.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.
This makes me incredibly sad. Loved her books. Archers Goon was one of my fave books growing up. And the chrestomanci chronicles were amazing. It's how I learned about guy Fawkes and alternate universes and nine lives and all that cool stuff! Gonna reread some of her stuff soon, still holds up

I was going to make a library run this afternoon. Now I know exactly what books I'm going to check out.
This is so sad. I loved her books, especially the Chrestomanci books. And Dogsbody! I love that book. And The Dark Lord of Derkholm. Really I don't think I've read anything of hers that I didn't love.

Howl's Moving Castle was one of my most favourite books back in the day
And don't even talk about Pratchett going. Don't dare.

The movie is so ridiculously different than the book. This is a good thing! They are both incredibly enjoyable for entirely different reasons!
It's very rare for that sort of thing to happen, in my experience
No.
God dammit. Her Fantasy Guide influenced my writing more then I can say.
Fuck.
I have a tumblr.
Check it out.
