Story

The world has been ravaged by a series of climatic disasters and society is on the verge of total breakdown. Now the aliens have returned, with a full invasion force bent on nothing less than the total annihilation of mankind, starting by trying to rip the heart out of Earth's most iconic city.

In New York, terrifying alien invaders stalk the streets and a nightmare plague strikes down the city's myriad inhabitants with brutal epidemic speed. The city's systems are in chaos, its streets and skyline are smashed and in flaming ruin. This is New York City like you've never seen it before.

Neither paramilitary law enforcement nor the might of the US military machine can stand against the invaders, and all who choose not to flee are dead men walking. Just to survive in this maelstrom of death will require technology beyond anything any modern soldier has ever seen.

One man will inherit that means to survive.

One supersoldier, wielding the combat enhancement technology of the future with Nanosuit 2, will make the last stand to save humanity from destruction in the urban jungle that is New York City.

nanosuit.jpg

Built by Crynet to be the next generation of military hardware, the Nanosuit turns regular soldiers into advanced weapons, supplying five key elements to victory : Strength, Armo(u)r, Speed, Cloaking and Tactical options. Combined together these make the wearer a new breed of soldier. You're not invincible, but you are more than equipped to overcome any obstacle in your way. Engage, adapt, survive.

maxst.jpg

[MAXIMUM STRENGTH] comes with multiple attributes :

[ Jump higher ] - The Nanosuit allows you to jump higher than a normal soldier could, with this in mind you can traverse obstacles, climb higher and find better positions from up high. You can scale walls provided you get close enough to the edge
[ Fisticuffs ] - Get in close to your victim, charge the melee attack and deliver a skull crushing blow. Unlike regular melee, this uses suit energy so be careful.
[ Throwing] - See an item that would look better flying at your enemy? Grab barrels, cans, pizza boxes, life-savers, people, teddy bears or whatever is not nailed down and ditch it. Try grabbing enemies and tossing them off buildings or into water for good times.
[ Better aim ] - Weapon sway getting you down? Hold sprint and the suit will give better stability when aiming down sights
[Maximum Karate] - Kick a car into a dude and try not to smile. Go on.

cloakapp.jpg

[CLOAK] - Allows you to go invisible and skulk around danger, rather than getting your hands dirty. You're not 100% safe though, as a patrolling or aggressive enemy will see you in close proximity.

- The faster you move, the faster the energy drains
- Getting hit will uncloak and fully drain the Nano-suit, be prepared if this happens.
- Attach a silencer and fire 1-3 shot bursts and you will remain cloaked. Fire too many rounds or fire without a silencer and your suit will drain fully.
- You can sneak up on enemies and stealth kill them, doing so will leave you uncloaked for a short period of time.
- Sneak up on enemies, plant C4 on their backs, sneak away. You practically have a mobile bomb if they're patrolling.

maxarm.jpg

[MAXIMUM ARMOUR] - Will help you in a sticky situation, in Armo(u)r mode explosions and incoming fire will bounce off you temporarily giving you a short burst of invulnerability. Slowly drains when you don't get hit. Also good for high (but not too high) falls. Unfortunately using Armo(u)r also makes you slower due to the excess bulk. Trade offs are worth it sometimes.

speedbanner.jpg

[SPEED] - Was a terrible movie about a bus, also a useful tool in the suit. If you need to get out of a situation fast, use the Nanosuit's speed to move much faster, gain momentum for longer jumps as well as the ability to slide under obstacles. Maximum momentum for the speedy soldier.

tactical.jpg

[TACTICAL DISPLAY] - Brings up useful information on the battlefield, including way-points, weapon stashes, enemy positions and flanking options. By hovering over and highlighting any of these, you can make them stay in your vision, allowing you to take advantage of patrolling guards and the ability to find and acquire weapons/ammo in a hurry.

[NANOVISION] - This fancy named contraption allows you to see heat sources in the environment, this includes cloaked enemies. Also useful in the dark for stalking [strike] girls who said no at the dance club [/strike] your enemies in both single and multi-player

COOL THINGS YOU NEED TO TRY :

- Attaching C4 to explosive barrels = Bigger booms
- Power-sliding on slopes for huuuge slides
- Firing the cannons in Castle Clinton
- Using the Power-slam suit upgrade from high heights. You won't die from the fall and feels awesome to pull off
- Diving into water, in some levels you can dive into water and find new paths, such as the level : Lab Rat.
- Using items in the world : Water coolers work, toasters shoot out toast, cameras flash. Dick around and see what you can find.

GAME MODES

Crash Site

Crash Site is a team-based game mode where 2 sides compete for control of Ceph Drop Pods launched periodically into the map by drop ships patrolling overhead. Teams score points by guarding the pods and keeping enemies at bay.

Team Instant Action

Team Instant Action is a standard game mode pitting 2 teams against each other. Kill as many opponents as possible, whilst attempting to minimize your own deaths. Use the Nanosuit to sneak up on enemies in Stealth mode, or charge in and gun them down in Armor.

NANOSUIT MODULES

Rollout for Multiplayer Nanosuit enhancements:
Your Nanosuit has Invisible Mode, Armor Mode and Strength Mode.

A. Armor Nanosuit Mode
Basically, Armor mode deals with your protection against enemies and from your surroundings.

Armor Enhance III

Your Nanosuit uses a lot of energy, so this module will help you reduce the speed of energy being use. A reduced energy will extend the use of you Armor. An upgrade will grant you essential movements. Your speed will increase and for the last upgrade you will be protected from Nanosuit destructions.

Air Stomp III

If you are in the air, this will be a powerful downward attack to enemies. This may look good but rather difficult to pull.

An upgrade will provide you with protection against falling from high level distance. Second upgrade will help you recover faster after you get an Air Stomp Attacks.

Nano Recharge III

In battle you will need help for regaining health faster. This mode will help you recover your health really quick. An upgrade will provide faster recharge of energy.

Threat Tracer III

Using Threat Tracer III, you will be able to track enemies all the more you will be able to spot snipers too. In a botanical environment where enemies are difficult to track down this module will come in handy.

As soon as you upgrade you will be able to spot incoming grenades. And from another upgrade, explosives will easily be detected.

Energy Transfer III

With each kill you made you will be able to restore the energy of your Nanosuit. Not a helpful mode though. You’d rather use your Nanosuit’s energy to a much better module.

An upgrade will provide you with additional restored energy with every kill. And on your last upgrade, a full restored Nanosuit energy on every kill.

Proximity Alarm III

This module will alert you if an enemy is close at hand. It may be irritating because of the alert sound that comes on and off from time to time but it’s better be aware than get surprised.

As you upgrade this module, the warning frequency increases every time an enemy is close. And will be at maximum frequency at the last upgrade.

Detonation Delay III

This mode will assist you in delaying detonation of grenades that is close by. However, not much of a help since you can hear grenades dropping from nearby. You can buy some time to avoid grenades too.

An upgrade will detonate explosives of enemies. Automated defenses will develop after another upgrade. This will be useful from missile attacks.

B. Invisible / Stealth Nanosuit Mode
An ability you can use from your Nanosuit. You may enhance this mode by the following available options.

Blind Spot III

There will be a less chance of enemies tracking you down. You will be protected against radio radar. If you are an assaulter or a camper this module will be your best friend. You can run around freely from cover to cover.

Your next upgrade will protect you from enemy tagging. And for the last upgrade is a protection from enemies’ Nano vision.

Cloak Tracker III

This module will help you track enemies that are in stealth mode at nearby places. Then you can kill them easily. Your level of spotting a cloaked enemy will increase after an upgrade. You will be at maximum level of eyeing a cloaked enemy in your next upgrade.

Covert Ops III

Since your footsteps are your key to succeed on missions, this module will help you reduce the sound of your footsteps. You will gain protection against Airstrike in your next upgrade and for the last upgrade you will be able to hear your enemies’ footsteps.

Stealth Enhance III

For switching on and off to stealth mode, this module will help the transition a lot faster. An upgrade will make you more invisible and really difficult to spy. There will be no cost for shadow in Stealth mode and another upgrade will reduce the energy used.

Jammer III

You may interfere with the enemies’ radar within range with this module. You will be in silent, so radio radar won’t be able to detect you. You may easily kill an unguarded enemy nearby.

An upgrade will provide you with protection against Jammer attacks from enemies. And another upgrade will increase the range of your ability to interfere with enemies’ radar.

Tracker III

This mode will increase you ability to spot footsteps nearby. An upgrade will show you your enemies’ route. But careful not to fall into traps.

An upgrade will give highlights to your enemies’ routes this time with direction. And increase the frequency of highlighted routes from enemies on your next upgrade.

C. Power / Strength Nanosuit Mode
This module includes all your suit power skills.

Aim Enhance III

Reduce weapon’s backfire when aiming downwards. An upgrade will lessen aim shake from grenades or explosives. Another upgrade will increase the mobility of your weapon upon aiming downwards.

Mobility Enhance III

Will reduce the use of energy from using jumping and sprinting skills from this module. And increase your speed in ledge grab. Your firing skill after sprinting will increase too after an upgrade.

Loadout Pro III

You may now be allowed to carry an additional primary weapon along with your secondary weapon. An upgrade will alter the weight penalty from attaching another weapon. And for the last upgrade, your mobility will be increase even if carrying weapons that are heavy.

Point Fire Enhance III

If you are shooting from the Hip, this module will help you reduce the spread of your primary weapons. An upgrade will reduce the spread of your secondary weapon. And the last upgrade will reduce the spread fired from your mounted weapon.

Rapid Fire Pro

Your primary weapon will fire faster at this module. An upgrade will also increase your fire rate for your secondary weapon. For the mounted weapons, you will fire faster too at the last upgrade.

Retriever III

After an enemy is killed you will be able to collect Dog tags from them using this module. An upgrade will require one Dog Tag for support bonus to be activated. Support bonuses will be activated for long period of time after the last upgrade.

Side Pack III

This module will give you an additional magazine to carry as your primary ammunition. An upgrade will increase the number of explosives that you can carry. And for the last upgrade you now have an additional attachment for your ammunition.

Weapon Pro III

This module aids in reloading your weapon faster than usual. An upgrade will increase your timing for aiming downwards. For the next upgrade switching between weapons will be faster now.

CRYSIS 2 ADVANCED OPTIONS ADDON

Crysis2AdvancedGraphicsOptions1_7.PNG

Ok, so you've just finished the game and you're sitting here thinking "What the fucking hell was that, what was going on this whole time?

Allow me to explain the events of Crysis 1 and 2 in a summary:

***ONLY READ ONCE YOU'VE FINISHED THE GAME! YOU'RE ENTERING [strike]BAT[/strike] SPOILER COUNTRY***
-The Ceph species in Crysis 2 are another sub species of the one from Crysis 1, the ones on Lingshan evolved their technology differently from the ones in New York (so say Crytek at Siggraph). Think along the lines of evolution differences between animals on different continents.
- In the original, Hargreave's real intention was to send the suit to Lingshan to not only test it's combat effectiveness, but to play host as a concubine for alien infection. The suit was designed to amalgamate with the alien spore and take it's traits, but also use the alien infection and turn it into weapon against the ceph.
- The suit is built off technology Hargreave already knew about, hence the trophy pieces in his office of alien technology.
- The suit takes time to prepare, but is essentially a walking lab capable of turning host organisms into useful ones. The suit makes a direct link to the owner, protecting them and adjusting on the fly to ensure the owner stays alive, even if involves combining with them.
- At the end of 1, Prophet goes a bit insane and the exposure to the virus not only corrupted the suit, but himself. In the ice scene towards the end, Prophet is found by Nomad and he is badly hurt and his attitude has changed. When Lingshan is nuked and Prophet goes in, his actions are more reckless than cautious as he was because he has become host to a parasite virus which he cannot control properly.
- Somewhere between Crysis and the start of 2, Prophet makes his way back to Hargreaves carrying the virus and in it's state it has become airborne, anyone who is affected is clearly killed off slowly. Hargreave/Rasch try to find a possible cure from the suit's data and structure, but cannot complete the process without a decent sample from the alien tissue.
- While New York is in Chaos, the Ceph take advantage of the suffering and evacuation with an underground invasion, causing more chaos.Alcatraz, with the help of the suit brings the final pieces together and combines both the Lingshan born virus with the newly attacking ceph to create an antivirus and destructive bioweapon against the ceph.
- The ceph are related to ocopi and branched off to a more intelligent species, a bit weird but whatever.
- Hargreaves wanted to take all the glory in saving the world for fame, fortune and bitches, by convincing Alcatraz that the suit has brewed the adequate cure in his bipedal lab, he tries to steal it from him.
- Alcatraz once again listens to anyone with a mouth and delivers the final dose of the bioweapon to the Ceph.
- This pisses the ceph off even more, and there are hundreds of ceph locations waiting to be awakened.
- Prophet, being a host survived as a part of the suit because the virus merged with his DNA, sailing his traits, personality and knowledge. Propthet is now a part of the suit and Alcatraz is the zombified body on the inside serving as a host.

[strike]PC Patch (1.2.0.0)[/strike] Currently out of date.

A new Crysis 2 PC patch will be going live in the next few hours. Below you will find a list of the top fixes:

    · Fix for spurious characters appearing when initiating text chat

    · Fix for Chatlog doesn't disappear after kill cam

    · Fixed occasional login issues

    · Changed VOIP defaults

    · Fixed some UI aspect issues on multiple monitors

    · Added option for crouch toggle in MP & SP

We’re working hard with our Ranked Server Partners to switch the servers at the same time that the patch goes live – but inevitably this will take time so we ask for your patience. When you launch the game, the patch will auto-download. If you cannot find servers, please exit the game and re-start to ensure the patch has applied.

You can check the version number by selecting “properties” on Crysis2.exe and selecting “details”. The correct version after patching will be 1.2.0.0, and the executable will be signed by Crytek GmbH.

Told myself I was going to wait for a big sale on this one via Steam but I caved in cause I have to have it now. Plus hopefully buying it now for PC gets Crytek and others hope to give PC better attention.

Direct X whatever, this game looks damn good on PC and sounds just as great. Granted my new PC is like 3 generations above a Xbox 360 but being able to play at 1080p with 60fps and at this level of beauty is great. They got some great music for this game that makes you feel like a noble hero or at least Batman with guns.

Yeah I do feel its a big step back for the PC version compared to Crytek's previous games. If you have ever seen the options in those game then its a huge surprise to see what they slimmed it down to here. I almost think its for the better though as I am pro keep it simple for PC if its going to survive as a viable platform in the future.

I approve of a more serious OP.

Also this game is pretty good and you're going to all have to get off your high horses and enjoy one of the best single player shooter experiences on any device in a good while.

    Also, Pingers man. Pingers.

I asked this in the last thread, but never saw an answer: Does anyone know what DRM Crysis 2 is using? Particularly on the Steam version? My Google searches only reveal people asking the same question prior to release.

More interestingly: I recall some people saying they would wait for a sale on the game before buying it. For those people (or just those still looking to get the game), if you can stand Direct2Drive, now's your chance! They're offering 15% off the normal $60 tag. Not quite Steam-level discount madness, yet, but still a nice chunk for it being this close to the release.

That was because the thread became a hatefest. If do you hate Crysis 2 so much, don't post here. If do you hate COD so much, don't post in that thread.
EDIT: I'm not referring to you, Decoy, as the hater. Sorry.

Huh... could I do that with the code given to me from Direct2Drive? And where do I get the downloader?

I would think so. I even used my retail copies of The Sims 3 and Dragon Age: Origins last night in the EAD and it took them in to my EA account so I can download those suckers whenever I want with now no DVD check...and I did!

I would think you just get software from EA. My Amazon copy of The Sims Medieval automatically installled the program.

Told myself I was going to wait for a big sale on this one via Steam but I caved in cause I have to have it now. Plus hopefully buying it now for PC gets Crytek and others hope to give PC better attention.

Um, maybe I'm just looking at it from the wrong angle, but doesn't that send the exact opposite message? That basically people will buy it anyway, so regardless they don't really need to care either way?

This isn't to say that Crysis 2 is bad (I feel the need to say that upfront lest I get accused of being a "hater" or whatever), but that line of argument reminds me of back before the movie reboot of Batman with Batman Begins, and there were genuinely people saying things like "Well if you'd have just supported the franchise, we'd have more Batman movies today." And well yes, we would have. There wouldn't have been that gap. The only problem being that instead of being like TDK they would have been like Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin and featured more bat-nipples.

Of course, not buying sends a similar message anyway (the platform's not worth bothering with), so I guess that's not really a "winnable" situation as such. Whatever the ultimate sales of Crysis 2 on the PC, it's usually a lot easier to take the stupider implications from that.

I made myself a bit more depressed now.

Yes, because this is exactly what I did because, man, fuck the fileplanet download manager and fuck comrade. Also, on an awesome side note, DA2 shows up in my games in the EA downloader in spite of me having bought the retail copy.

Also, regarding the DRM I think it's the same scheme DA2 uses. It asks you to activate when you first run it and that's about it. Also, when you uninstall Crysis 2 it automagically runs the de-authorization so you don't have to worry about doing it manually.

That last OP might have given some people a strange idea or two. Here's my review:

First off, let's just get this out of the way. We all know about Crysis and what it stands for. The graphics look amazing. Or stunning. They might look both. They might be able to cover both those superlatives. They're arguably the best you'll find on consoles (I don't own a PS3, so I haven't played Uncharted 2 or Killzone 3), and certainly the best on the PC. John Carmack may have something to say later this year when Rage finally comes out, but for right now, the gentlemen at Crytek are the undisputed champions of high end photo-realistic visuals.

Crysis 2 is much more FPS than any other FPS you'll find these days. What I mean to say is that there's so much more depth and thought and complexity and features and options... it's just chock-full of gaming goodness that you won't find anywhere else. You can move around the environment and approach an engagement on your terms. The scripting is used sometimes for dramatic effect, yet doesn't go overboard to where you feel like you're stuck on a rail. Doors actually open for you, and not just for scripted AI companions. The weapons can be customized with various accessories and you can switch between firing modes.

Assault rifles and SMGs can switch between semi auto, three round burst, and full auto. Yay. They removed the choke on the shotgun so you can't adjust the pellet spread, which is a letdown. However, this does give it more of a specialized role in the arsenal. Unlike CoD, where accessories like red dot and ACOG sights were a nice boon to the shooting yet were not options to be chosen, Crysis 2 allows for on-the-fly modification. This is a powerful tool to be used in the midst of combat, not just before or after like you'd imagine. For example, you can snipe at targets with a DSG-1 sniper rifle, get caught by surprise by a melee alien at close range, and immediately switch to a reflex sight and blow it away. This sort of flexibility is quite useful and ultimately a feature that many other FPSs could stand to borrow/copy. The days of playing Modern Warfare 2, where an EMP disables your red dot sight and you have to go and seek out another M4A1 with iron sights, should be well behind us.

Also, I did notice and appreciate how they modeled the pistol at the beginning. It was instantly obvious to me that the pistol was empty and needed to be reloaded, because the slide was locked back. So immediately, you know you need to go hunt for ammo and reload that sucker. It's a nice touch and shows an attention to detail.

There's a visor and nanovision mode that's super handy. You switch into the visor and tag enemies to lock onto their location at all times. It works similarly to the tagging feature in Battlefield Bad Company 2 and GRAW. Even while behind cover, you'll be able to keep track of where hostiles are and where they're moving to. The Nanovision is a step beyond regular night vision, and works more like infrared vision. Because Crysis 2 is so detailed and

The Nanosuit is half of what makes Crysis 2 stand head and shoulders above every other FPS out there. And by every other FPS, I mean COD and COD clones. It's the star of the game and its various abilities add depth to the gameplay. Cloak and become just like the Predator, stalking lone soldiers and stabbing them through the back, or hide in a bush somewhere and snipe your targets in the head from beyond their range of vision. Armor mode turns you into a walking tank and you basically feel like RoboCop did on the mean streets of Detroit. It feels slower and chunkier, with loud thuds from your feet impacting the ground as you trot along.

The in-game upgrade system allows you to augment these basic suit modes with even more impressive attributes, like slower energy drain or higher deflection against projectiles. Energy management is part and parcel of the suit and must be taken into account during combat, bringing to mind the great space sims of the 90s. Crytek seems to be a company made of gamers who've played great games and want to keep those great games alive in spirit. I commend them for that.

The other half of what makes Crysis 2 stand out is, of course, the environment and what you're able to do in it. Even though the environments are noticeably smaller than those in the original Crysis, the soul of that game's design still shines through. Every significant battlefield will have multiple options for you to choose from, and the suit even helpfully points these out when you enter a level. Rarely is the direct assault approach the most effective one, as you're able to flank, snipe, or even infiltrate through these situations. On higher difficulties, these options become almost critical to success. However, the game doesn't tell you what to do, you get to make that decision for yourself, depending on your own personal play choice. Crytek believes in gamers to exercise their own free will and decide their own fate, instead of forcefully handholding them through the entire game. This level of confidence in gamers is incredibly refreshing and the game feels immensely liberating as a result.

At the very beginning of the campaign, there's a ferry out in the water. At first, I figured I'd better stay back and not venture out into the water, since the game would probably just drown me as soon as I jumped in. But then I remembered that this was Crysis, and not CoD. And lo and behold, I could swim out to the ferry and board it, and swim around in the water at my leisure. I'd been conditioned to accept the CoD model, when Crytek would never hold me to such restrictions, never let me down in that regard. Crytek was better then that, and god bless them. There are also various moments in the campaign where there is no action, and you're free to simply walk along the ruins of a partially destroyed New York, visually drinking in the beauty and audacious design of this apocalyptic environment. I was heavily reminded of Half-Life 2 at those moments, which is fantastic.

In addition to maneuvering around the environment with freedom, the game's also got a cover system with a lean mechanic! The first Crysis did not have a cover system. This was a great addition. Unlike a game like Halo, which just has you manually strafe around, Crytek realized that the level of threat dictated that even a super soldier with armor mode would need to use cover sometimes. The cover system is not implemented on absolutely every corner and surface, which is a little disappointing, but it's on about half of them so you're generally going to be covered.

I have to say, I feel a little bit let down by the bosses in this game. In Crysis and Crysis Warhead, you fought the Hunters. That's the official name for those gigantic four-legged walkers, which looked like they were over a hundred feet wide(!). They were an astounding sight and blew me away when I first had to fight them. The sheer scale and destructive power was almost unrivaled in an FPS, but what really impressed me was the complex design. It looked huge, yet it had very small intricate details everywhere. The impression you got was something totally alien and menacing and supremely powerful.

In Crysis 2, there aren't any Hunters. The smaller scale of the urban environments probably necessitated their removal.
The biggest boss you fight is a Pinger, a 20 foot tall walker on three legs with an appearance that's very Metal Gear Rex-ish. The design aesthetic of the Hunter seems to be entirely absent from the Pinger, because you'd never know they were from the same alien species if you compared them. It's fine to fight, but it's just not the imposing colossus that the Hunter was. Pingers look like they could be knocked down with one leisurely swipe from a Hunter.

So yes, Crysis 2 is simply more game than nearly any other FPS game I can think of. But on the other hand, it also feels like a bit less game than the first Crysis. I've already mentioned the boss fights just now, but there's also stuff like the gunship ride near the end of C1's campaign. You actually got to pilot a gunship in this fun little flight sim section. You don't ever see that sort of thing in an FPS, but it was a nice change of pace and showed you that Crytek was determined to blow you away in every conceivable manner possible in a video game. These folks were not afraid of raising the bar. Or pushing the envelope, pick your cliched phrase. Of course, the smaller environments are an obvious change. Assaulting gigantic NK bases was dangerous but fun, yet now we're assaulting a mere building or two. Going into a gigantic alien mothership for a couple of hours has changed to us now entering an alien tower and being spit out a couple seconds later. It's not a giant leap forward from the first game, and for some people that may be disappointing. When it's been a four year wait, some people expect a giant leap forward. Instead, I consider Crysis 2 to be a fine companion piece to Crysis 1, just as Warhead was.

While most of Crysis 2 is at the bleeding edge, its storytelling unfortunately feels surprisingly outdated. The central story is probably the most flawed component of the game and the one legitimately subpar element. It basically felt like they ripped off the story to Prototype and added in aliens. Of course, Prototype's story was kind of a rip-off of countless low rent scifi movies, so maybe that's the true origin of C2's story. Richard Morgan, apparently a celebrated sci-fi writer, wrote the story for this game but if this is typical of his body of work, I'd venture away from reading it. In any case, it doesn't make for a very compelling narrative and the characters are all flat cardboard cutouts. The narrative tools they use include such well-worn tropes of video gaming as sitting in a chair mutely while a brainy scientist delivers exposition to you with heavy amounts of techno-babble. Your character Alcatraz says nothing and this silent protagonist role just produces puzzlement as characters react to you without receiving any response.
Everybody around you thinks you're Prophet and there's one point where you even enter someone's apartment and they believe you're Prophet for a few minutes. Now, wouldn't this be a good time to admit that you're not Prophet, when entering someone's home? Isn't it rude to just mutely enter and not say a word about your true identity? How about "Hey, hold on there man. I think you've got the wroooong idea about me. See, I ain't this Prophet guy! He already killed himself, at the beginning of the game."
I had no idea who Gould was at the beginning, but he seemed important. Then later, you find out who he is, but it doesn't seem all that important. He's just a scientist. So what? Why did Prophet have to kill himself? Apparently, he was infected with the alien virus? But he was wearing the nanosuit, so the virus infected him through the nanosuit? Which doesn't make sense, because the nanosuit is portrayed as protecting you, the player, from infection because it's an amazing suit. Or are you infected as well? It didn't seem like I was infected. Why was Prophet infected but not Alcatraz?
The ending seems like it's meant to wrap up everything that's occurred and explain all the mysteries, yet its revelations simply left me more confused than before. There's no mention of Nomad, and Prophet's role in the Crysis universe seems much more pivotal than we were led to believe in the first game.

At the end of the day though, I have to admit a sad reality, which is that I don't play FPSs for the stories. Traditionally, most FPSs have not had good stories. Half-Life and BioShock are the exceptions, I feel. So while the story to Crysis 2 arguably makes very little sense, or if it does make sense, is delivered to the player poorly... it's not a huge sticking point. The rest of the game overcomes this handicap. If this game was an RPG, it would be a much larger problem, but judging by the metrics of FPSs, I can't take them to task too much.

One feature that they carried over from C1 is the ability to pick up random items in the environment. While this novelty is neat at first, it quickly becomes meaningless. Sure, you can pick up a soda can or briefcase and throw it, but it doesn't do anything in actual gameplay. Also, it leads to you walking around and constantly seeing "Hold X" prompts on the bottom of your screen, which become distracting and make it harder to actually spot and pick up legitimately useful items like weapons or secret collectibles. The ability to pick up anything might remind you of the zombie game Dead Rising, except that picking up random items here does nothing, while picking up anything in DR was useful as they could almost all be used as weapons.

Also, it should be pointed out that the visual presentation of picking up items looks quite shoddy, with a dingy and horribly aliased green outline highlighted around the items as you walk up to them. This probably looks a good deal better on the PC and might be just fine on there, but here they've seemingly dropped the ball and the translation leaves a lot to be desired.

There are a few parts in the game where the game actually spawns in additional reinforcements once you clear out an area. There was a part where I'd just killed dozens and dozens of CELL grunts and their bodies were piling up down there and I ran out of ammo and had to resort to cloaking mode to get the last couple of them, it was that bad. Crysis 1 had a few large areas like bases where they were just populated by a lot of guards and they would head towards you once you started killing some of them. So there wasn't any actual spawning of enemies out of thin air. Here, it's very obvious that there's spawning waves occurring. Sometimes, you'll actually catch them spawning right in front of you, allowing for easy kills. Other times, you'll simply see an enemy charging out of a corner of the map over and over again. This sort of respawning mechanic simply encourages people to cloak their way through entire missions, as it feels like there's no point to carefully and methodically eliminating enemies, because they'll simply respawn and invalidate all your work. The only good aspect to this mechanic is that you can sometimes farm aliens for their nano-catalyst.

I played the game on Veteran and it's a bit of a breeze. There's nothing really challenging if you use your armor abilities (Cloak), play tactically, and take your time. The typical Crysis 2 battle is a really nice tactical puzzle that you can approach from multiple directions, which has always been the crowning achievement, and I'd imagine a source of pride, of the Crytek games.

I do have to say, it's never ever made sense to me how you can cloak, shoot a guy while cloaked, and immediately lose all your energy. But if you cloak, line up your aim on a guy, turn off cloak and immediately shoot him, you keep all your energy. It seems like such a silly distinction to make, with such a huge disparity of outcome, right? There's virtually no difference between the two behaviors, except for one quick button press. Yet the entire energy bar depends on that press. Now, some people have said that the cloak has to drain energy because it's trying to compensate for the gunfire. Well, that's a nice justification, but it falls flat when you actually play the game, because merely throwing or detonating C4 will sap the energy. Why would throwing C4 have any effect on the cloak or energy? I don't think it makes sense.

A lot of reviews have given differing opinions on the enemy AI. Gamespot in particular said the AI was disappointing. From my experience, the AI is mostly fine. If you go loud and try to engage in a firefight with them, the AI behaves very intelligently and believably. They take cover and mantle over it and maneuver around the environment in a very competent manner.

The issue really comes down to cloaking, I believe. If you use and abuse the Cloaking mode, which is very easy to do, it will indeed make the AI goons look like idiots. But that's what it's meant to do. Being effectively invisible is going to neuter the AI and what they can do. It becomes a cat and mouse game but you're now the cat, whereas usually in stealth games the player is the mouse. I mean, think back to John McTiernan's Predator. That was a serious team of badasses, but the Predator made them all look like idiots, right? That's exactly what happens here, with you as the Predator. It's meant to fool the AI and it does. And that's why I think some reviews have been badmouthing the AI, because the reviewers probably just used Stealth all the time. Which is perfectly fine, but it shouldn't be a knock against the game.

Now, I said mostly fine. There are some instances where the AI will walk into the wall obliviously. This is probably due to the dev team not setting up enough parameters to limit them. So they'll keep walking into the wall and jittering in a rather comedic fashion. It kinda looks like they're trying to imitate Wally West when he vibrates at superspeed. This problem even afflicts larger enemies such as the Pinger boss. Imagine a 20 foot tall Mech vibrating wildly at superspeed against the corner of a wall. It kinda takes you out of the experience, doesn't it?

The laser sight for the SCARAB seems to have some fidelity issues on the console. At close range, you get a nice red dot where the laser meets the target. And at long range, it goes off into the distance and you just see the beam. But there seems to be a range from about 10-100 feet where the dot turns into a nice red... square where it meets the target. That's right, it's a square laser sight. I'm guessing this is where their anti-aliasing solution perhaps failed them for the console hardware? I'm sure it's fine on the PC, but yeah... square dot looks weird.

The game lacks quicksaves/manual saves. Instead, it uses checkpoint saves. Unfortunately, it's got terrible checkpoints. The game encourages experimentation and exploration during combat, but unfortunately this experimentation can often lead to death. Try and sneak up on a tank and it blows you up? Get sent all the way back to the beginning of the level. Slowly and methodically clear out an entire area by sniping, only to die from the last enemy? Get sent all the way back to the beginning.

There are indeed invisible walls in the game. I don't remember ever encountering an invisible wall in Crysis 1. It was a huge island, and you just went where you wanted to, until you came to the ocean. There were certain mountains and sheer cliffs that stopped you from progressing, but they all felt natural. Here, it's very abrupt and sudden. I didn't see it coming, and they made no attempt to disguise it with debris or anything. Just a solid invisible force field.

The sniper rifle has a visual glitch. If you have the sniper scope equipped, you lack any sort of reticle while aiming from the hip, and while looking down the scope you'll see a nice red crosshair with a dot in the middle. This is probably how they intended it to be. However, if you mount another sight on, like the reflex sight, and then mount the sniper scope back on, you'll suddenly have the reticle while aiming from the hip. Then, when you look down the scope, you'll actually see the tightened white reticle, together with the red scope crosshair.

Does the PC version have any noticeable pop-in? That's probably the biggest complaint I have about the console version's graphics, and I'd imagine it'd be something they'd have solved for the PC. I'm not talking about texture pop-in like in UE3, but actual pop-in of objects. Like, in Gould's apartment building. You step out into a hallway and look down the hallway, and there's a door. When you zoom in with a sight, there's an H above the door. Zoom out, and the H just disappears. Or I'll look at a building in the distance, and it seems to be missing the front wall. It looks like there's a big empty space in the middle of the building. But when I zoom in, the front wall pops into view. The building looks normal. Zoom out, and the wall disappears again. Or an enemy might be standing behind a yellow crate, but this crate is invisible unless you zoom in with a sight.

This was a major problem I had with Crysis 1 as well, playing on medium settings. One time, I saw a Korean soldier standing out in the distance, next to a couple trees. He was completely out in the open, unobscured. I zoomed in with the Assault Scope, and couldn't find him anymore. What was actually going on was that the soldier was standing behind a giant boulder, with some bushes, and some tree branches. But none of those objects were visible until I zoomed in with the sight. Zoom back out, and he's completely visible, without any of those obstacles. LOD is obvious a technique we need for video game technology, but it's a bit much when it significantly interferes with the gameplay like that.

The game rewards you with nano-catalyst when you kill an alien. It's like xp for your abilities. However, this nano money only stays on the aliens' dead bodies for a short period of time. If you're the kind of player who stays back and tries to snipe all the enemies in an area before moving in, you're going to find that all the nano currency has despawned already. This is kinda unfair, IMO. It punishes players who prefer playing with a sniper mentality and only rewards those players who are close to their kills.

Crysis 2 is a great game, full stop. The storytelling fails, but if you''re a fan of first person shooters and have decided not to play this yet, you're doing yourself a huge disservice, because it's the FPS we all deserve, and the one we need right now. After four long years of drought, the rightful heir to the throne has finally returned.

    I believe in Crytek.

Nice long writeup Delta, to answer your pop-in questions : The game uses projected textures, on PC's extreme settings this is not noticeable, though some moments a few close textures pop in and out. Dunno why.

Having an automatic deauthorization tool is something that should have been included in these games since day one. Glad to see it there, finally. But beyond that, what are we talking about? Obviously we have limited authorizations, but is it via SecuROM? Tages/SolidShield? I'm guessing it's not GFWL since they're using Gamespy. And, aside from that, does Steam invoke a third party DRM on top of the normal layer of Steam protection?

Forgetting for a moment that collecting nanoxp is buggy(wasn't able to pick up any in the last level of the game until the last fight and then it was useless) I'd still say that there has to be a better way to handle upgrading your suit. It was neat idea that made a sliver of sense given the story but IMO didn't work out too well.

I can't really call Crysis 2 more of a game than the hundreds of FPS's that came out within the last twelve months. It looks pretty and plays like Crysis1 but that's about all it can tout. It's riddled with bugs, enemy respawns, sub-standard textures, low poly counts, story and levels. There's a terrible checkpoint system that will most likely frustrate you. Only one stealth kill that's a quicktime event and can really mess up your plan if you don't press it just right. Sure you can hold down melee and one-hit most guys but it's not really a stealth kill.

Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed the heck out of the game but there is the distinct aroma things being cut and preened to work on consoles. For the game that was supposed to be the new PC gaming litmus test I don't believe it delivers on all accounts.

I got the game on Amazon to get $15 credit for a future purchase. You can then use that key it gives and put it on the EA downloader which so far seems useful so far. Also a much faster download then Amazon.

Huh... could I do that with the code given to me from Direct2Drive? And where do I get the downloader?

Also, regarding the DRM I think it's the same scheme DA2 uses. It asks you to activate when you first run it and that's about it. Also, when you uninstall Crysis 2 it automagically runs the de-authorization so you don't have to worry about doing it manually.

    I agree 100,000% about the auto-deauthorizing.

If I had to take a shot in the dark I'd say SecuROM but I'm not at home right now so I can't check. It's pretty unobtrusive and hasn't given me any issue yet.

Also, Having played through more than half of (but not finished) Crysis 2 and then immediately going back and playing 1 I have this to say: Crysis 1/Warhead is a better game. Period.

But this is like a band dropping an amazing, pants-shittingly groundbreaking album and then for their second doing the same thing but without the groudbreaking bit. Crysis 2 is excellent and it is flat-out astonishing the graphic quality they managed to pull off on consoles and lower-specced PCs.

Wow, they actually believed people would want to wear a backpack like that? In public, with other normal human beings?

The Nano Edition exists, but was limited to some stores (Electronics Boutique and Online from the EA store)

The backpack was changed to be more squarish, and the statue lights up. It exists still, yes.

A quick comment on the energy drain while doing actions when cloaked: My logic is that the cloaking device in your suit in mostly designed to cloak your physical body and extends the cloaking field to your armaments. However, it has to expend energy to cloak things like muzzle flashes, smoke, possibly bullets in close proximity to you (in an attempt to further disguise your location. Doing something like throwing/placing C4 would also have to expend energy since you are directly interacting with an object that isn't within the cloaking field, and you don't want to have enter the field, so the suit has to compensate for that and work around it- all the while keeping you cloaked. It probably even has to work harder to keep you fully cloaked when you are closer to enemies.

That's how I've always looked at it, so energy drain while using stuff when cloaked doesn't bother me. It also makes sense that silenced pistols don't full drain your energy, since they fire less bullets, smaller bullets and have almost no muzzle flash (I imagine).

I did also notice that sniping while cloaked had a better effect at keeping enemies from noticing my location than decloaking and then firing, since if you fire at over 90 or so energy you keep your cloak for about a second and can back out of sight.

While I'm at it, might as well share my thoughts on a few other things. I've enjoyed the story so far, and while there's a few odd plot holes and the occasional underwhelming revelation, it's been fresh and different, and the dialogue has been pretty natural and enjoyable to hear. Richard Morgan has done a good job in building up some atmosphere that meshes well with the gameplay, but I think he has fallen short in terms of characterization (compared to his first 3 books, anyway- Kovacs is a supurb character and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise!).
I do feel like a super soldier, and that everyone knows that I am, and the reminder every so often that it's really about the suit is very chilling when combined with the narrative around the suit just growing and getter better and adapting/adding in the alien tech. It makes you feel very much like a small piece in a huge puzzle when the topic comes up, but it doesn't ruin the elation you feel when you act like a one man army and obliterate your way through swathes of enemies. The stark difference between the two ideas somehow manages to work- in my opinion- and keeps you wondering about what's going to happen next with you and your suit.

I do like that they made suit energy regen faster, and the delay before regen starts was also lowered. It makes swift hit and run attacks much more applicable, and you can do small ones within the actual firefight by using cover to regen while leaning out to take potshots/get locations. Speaking of which, the tactical vision thing is extremely cool, if a little underused.

Mobility is certainly there, and very powerful, but I am a little disapointed with the energy-drain only sprint. Perhaps making normal sprint a toggle, and speed sprinting a hold-down-the-key thing could've worked (in the same way that you power jump/attack by holding down the respective keys). Power sliding and ledge grabbing is awesome fun, and works very smoothly. Now if only I could do sideways rolls at the end of a slide, or hurl myself at enemies after a ledge-grab and I'd have pretty much everything I wanted.

Haven't tried the multiplayer yet, I'll do so once I finish the campaign.

EDIT: Holy typos, Batman! Fixed most of them.

I finished the game a little while ago. Holy shit, that last level. There were a few scenes towards the end where I thought it was all over but it just kept escalating all the way. Crytek sure know how to build amazing environments. No other game i've played has looked this good.

I thought the story was pretty good. It's not like it was going to be an epic journey, but I think it told the story of this particular conflict effectively, with a few nice twists and enough reference to the first game. It had really good pacing - there was always a break when I was getting a bit combat fatigued but there was plenty of drive to keep going. The intensity and momentum was definitely helped by the excellent music. Reminded me of Inception's music; fitting, distinctive but not distracting.

Given how much stuff there was in the game I can understand why it wasn't quite as good a PC game as the OG. The attention to detail is impressive, character models, weapons, environments sound effects. It's just a really cohesive, solid whole.

There were only two negatives for me: The suit upgrade system was pretty rubbish, most of the upgrades were just worthless and in each branch there was only one obvious choice. It didn't give me the feeling that the suit was getting better at all, they should have just had some power upgrades for each of the modes - throwing stuff twice as hard, running twice as fast, jumping way further.

I also came across two really bad bugs in the semper fi level; The Move up!/Go! dialogue was stuck repeating for the whole level, becoming supremely annoying and the scripting broke near the end (after defending the position). The latter was fixable by just climbing over the rocks to the side and carrying on though, so not too big a deal.

Overall, it was almost as much fun as HL2 for me, and pretty long too. Lets hope this goes some way to reversing the 5 hour SP campaign trend. I can't wait to do it all again when the DX11 patch comes out!

I agree, I finished up the campaign last night and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Multiplayer has some connectivity issues, but it looks absolutely amazing on my home theater setup. I'd put it on par with Uncharted 2 in terms of visuals, not close to Killzone 3's grim dark environs though.

Overall though, 8.5/10 for me. Definitely thinking about going through the campaign again on the hardest difficulty just so I can go through the opening acts again.

Are we doing a PSN/XBL exchange for those who desire the ire of the PC crowd?

Apparently Crytek released their "security patch" today which is supposed to prevent the invis/wall/speep/aim hacks and ban those that have been using them. I say 'apparently', because the patch has done absolutely nothing and the servers are still rife with cheaters and the patch has done absolutely nothing. Complete failure. Oh well, lesson learned, go the console route next time.

I was worried about being hit by the nano bucks bug. Then I realized that you can only have 1 upgrade active in each category, and that most of them were terrible anyway. Pretty much got all the upgrades worth getting after 3 alien encounters.

    Oh well.

Stealth Enhance took me quite a while to earn.

Stealth Enhance is unquestionably the best upgrade in the game.

    Stealth is for pussies.

The game is easy enough already without totally breaking the ai.

    And that's on post-human warrior.

I got no footsteps, and that's good enough.

    So, just finished singleplayer.

Overall I'm very impressed - some really great-looking set pieces. The ending was a bit of a letdown though, suddenly it just... ends. Those dudes you fight at the very end were also buggy as hell - several of them ended up walking into a wall without reacting at all to me so I could just walk up to them and do a stealth-kill. Feels a whole lot like "shit, we ran out of time for a proper end-game boss fight" going on.

realy liking the single shot grendel so far, feelt kinda useless in burst but it's quite great in single shoot, sucks that I have to sacrifice an atachment slot for it

oh and anyone else getting constantly killed by headshoots? the stats show that more than half my deaths are by headshoots -.-

Enosh, what are you playing on? PC or the consoles?

I've heard a lot of talk of tons of cheats and hacks in the PC version, for some reason Crytek allowed pirated copies to play with official copies.

I play on the PS3 haven't had nearly as many death from headshots, I'd honestly say maybe one in nine or ten at most.
