Man live in servants. I miss the gilded age as well.
Last year I spent some time with Leigh at her parent's home. They have a few servants. A cook, some cleaning staff, gardener, etc. And it was such a painfully awkward experience for me. The idea that someone was being paid to clean up after me made me deeply uncomfortable.
My family when I was younger for a while had a lady who would come in and clean once a week mostly because both my parents were working full time. This stopped around high school though.
And I think I could be more comfortable with that. But yeah full time servants isn't something I'd deal with well.
yeah i had some issues with even just having a lady show up every few weeks and if i was home when she came i felt compelled to help out. i guess i assume that i would get used to having installed servants (is that even the proper term these days?) but the idea kind of wigs me out.

The real problem with modern servants is that it's no longer fashionable to beat them over trivial and possibly imagined mistakes. That has removed a lot of the appeal for me.

Look guys I used to be poor too. The worst habit I've picked up from being raised in a poor house is the inability to waste food by throwing it away. I always, ALWAYS have to eat all the food up even if I'm not hungry. It sucks so much! When I see someone throwing away food it breaks my heart.

Actually, my parents used to have cleaners come once a week.
I didn't like being home when they were doing that, on account of me being in the way while they are trying to vacuum or whatever. So I couldn't really get much done.

when i was working we hired a lady to come clean every couple of weeks. having someone kind of hit the "reset" button every 2 weeks really helped up be able to keep our place nice.

But I've heard "you're not leaving the table until everything is finished" far too many times in my life.
My first job out of college and I'm making more than my mom has ever made. But she seems like she's perfectly content with living poor. I don't know how she does it... But she's told me she doesn't like having a lot of money. I think it's a coping mechanism though.
I REALLY have a problem with the food thing as a result of going through some lean years w/ my family. I remember finding some flour in a cabinet once and just eating it with a spoon.
So yeah. No control. If there is food in front of me I'm eating till it hurts.

anyways since i got laid off, we laid off our maid and i've been trying to keep the house clean since i'm home during the days, along with doing cooking and grocery shopping, etc. frankie started getting pretty bad - because i was cleaning, she just started leaving shit around and refusing to even clean up after herself minimally. she'd leave dirty plates around, leave clothing on the floor everywhere, leave hobby shit wherever it dropped. when i'd do laundry and ask her to put away her things that i didn't know where they went, she just started throwing it onto the floor or sometimes back into the dirty clothes hamper. it's bad enough that it made what i was trying to do difficult
so i went on strike a few weeks ago and let the filth accumulate. when i left for denver, the place was a fuckin sty. while i was away, she called and said that she was cleaning up the place and that i could expect to come home to a clean house.
but i didn't. either she just lost interest partway through or get super-busy messing everything up again after she was done.
ugh. i guess we are going to need to have a talk. maybe we'll need to get Maria back over.

I can say from experience that being invited to dinner by the people who pay you to clean their toilets is really awkward and weird. It's just not really an appropriate social situation at all. When you depend on people for your income, they're not really your friend and you can't ever make the mistake of speaking or acting like they are.
Are there illustrations or should I bother looking for an audio book version?
There are a few charts and graphs. Not many, but enough.
There are some US maps that show correlation between geographic location and personality traits. Like Washington state has very low on extraversion, San Francisco and New York are high on openness, etc.
Also, there are some places where the author admits that you just can't tell anything about the person. Some traits that simply do not affect living spaces, for instance.

i didn't even grow up poor, but my mom did, and really hammered in the "waste nothing" ethic. when i became a poor college kid, it was a simple transition to fall into happy austerity.

It has taken me many, many years to be able to leave food on my plate or say that I don't like something rather than just eating it anyway. I grew up pretty well off, but my parents didn't and they instilled some nice working class values into me.
There's a bunch of anti-abortion people set up at walkway crossings throughout my campus today. Normally I wouldn't mind as a lot of annoying people tend to stand in those areas yelling about whatever cause they're trying to promote, but these guys have big posters with shock images of aborted fetuses everywhere. It's frankly completely tasteless and offensive.
It really pissed me off, so I'm considering going to and trolling them.
Here's what I was thinking:
Write "FREE ABORTIONS" on a big poster and then go stand near them with a hanger. (Y/N)

Ahhahahah I like your idea you should just stick with that.
My family never wanted for much. I grew up upper middle class(130k to 160k) a year on average. It depended on how the office did. But my family always kind of had this waste not, want not mentality built in. Don't buy things you won't use. Don't buy food you won't eat. Its okay to buy things you like as a hobby but always pay off all your bills every month.
