Basically: You can only be King or Queen by blood.
You can be queen by marriage but not king.
The monarchy is inherited by blood, but a king always ranks above a queen. So if the monarch is male, his wife can be queen because she ranks below him. But if the monarch is female and her husband became King he would technically rule over her, so he has to be a prince instead.
Hooray for ancient traditions that demand women always be inferior to men, even if they are the head of the country.
Huh, I didn't know that either. smof is so learned!
I wonder what the chances are of the monarchy's inheritance rules changing on a scale of "never" to "get out of my sight, peasant"

To be fair I only know that because on Friday I asked my mum why Prince Philip was Prince and not King. But I enjoyed that brief moment of you all thinking I am clever, so thank you!
Once in a while you'll see Prince Consort used as a title (as opposed to just prince consort, which I guess they'd all be) for those guys, to differentiate them from all the other lowly princes.

I was like...Oh. Shit.
This just got real.
I had to make a trade. Do I get the EPL/FA Cup badges, or go the full Tevez.
I went the full Tevez.
That'd make the Irish happy.

To be fair to the ancient traditions, at least it allows for women to take power, and actively keeps them in power after they marry.
So, you know, as ancient sexism goes, it could be worse.
As long as they don't have any brothers.
I mean I guess we can settle for having a girl monarch, if there's no other option.
Though it is an improvement over the 'skip straight past the only girl child, to her male children' process, so I will give it that.
