I'm still confused how actual job growth, an improved stock market and some hope for the future, is an ailing economy. I swear much like the trump canidacy this is an entirely media created beast.

The housing market is still anemic and there's still some belief that the stock market is on a temporary bubble and will dive again. And high gas prices haven't helped matters either. That said, I don't think the stock market is going to dive and house prices are finally getting back to sustainable levels, so hopefully that worry and media stoked fear will start to disappear, though it hardly matters in the end, as the the 24 hr news cycle needs something to frame a narrative with, so if it's not an ailing economy it will be health care, or some other issue.

I guess my issue with these things is that this the economic issues the country is facing is entirely the fault of 8 years of inept leadership. So I don't see how pointing out the economy republicans broke is good for republicans. Only in America I guess.

"obama didn't fix our mistakes fast enough, reelect us so we can make new ones!"

The economy has improved dramatically for corporations and wealthier Americans, but that recovery hasn't really hit the average American yet. It's worth criticizing the 8 years of GOP economic and regulatory ineptitude under Bush Jr. (as well as casting some aspersions at the deregulations Clinton let the Congressional GOP get away with), but Obama does shoulder some blame for not focusing more economic stimulus spending on things that impact the poor and the unemployed.

Of course, the economic policies the GOP is advocating and will force their 2012 Presidential candidate to advocate are infinitely worse, but the economic malaise the GOP is hoping to spin into votes (and did during the 2010 midterms) isn't purely some media invention.

There's also the three straight weeks of new unemployment claims topping 400k. Which is not good news.

We are sitting at 8.7% unemployment when we were in the low 5% range before the economy tanked in the middle of '08. Lets also not forget the number of people who were unemployed for so long that they stopped looking and no longer show up in the unemployment numbers. So I think that it makes sense for the media to claim the economy or at least the job market isn't doing so well.

As for the housing market I don't think it should bounce back because everything was way overvalued.

Yes that was santorum, I mean people deal with grief in different ways, but jesus that story is creepy. Also regarding the economy and how it might effect the primary.

It's not that the unemployed are finding jerbs. They are no longer counted after a certain amount of time. They then end up in modern Hoovervilles and no longer count as human beings.

(Relevant to the thread because Medicare/Ryan is the biggest issue in NY-26). In a district the GOP won almost 75-25 in 2010, and 55-40 in 2008, the Democrat is leading with 61% in. 48-43, with a Tea Party independent playing spoiler. If the Dems win that one, it might be fun watching them all furiously backpedal in their support of Paul Ryan.

At least one guy who looks at this for a living has called. Nate Silver's pretty close and apparently thinks Sarah Palin is for sure running, but not sure what that's based on.

How is it bullshit? The standard Unemployement Rate you see listed is U3 which doesn't include discouraged workers (among a few others)

I think this is a pretty decent indication that Palin will now run (besides the fact that she just bought a home in AZ, where she's long been rumored to want to set up her campaign HQ):
    Palin's Secret Weapon

Shortly after Republicans swept last November to a historic victory in which Sarah Palin was credited with playing a central role, the former Alaska governor pulled aside her close aide, Rebecca Mansour, to discuss a hush-hush assignment: Reach out to conservative filmmaker Stephen K. Bannon with a request. Ask him if he would make a series of videos extolling Palin's governorship and laying to rest lingering questions about her controversial decision to resign from office with a year-and-a-half left in her first term. It was this abdication, Palin knew, that had made her damaged goods in the eyes of some Republicans who once were eager to get behind her potential 2012 presidential campaign.

The response was more positive than Palin could have hoped for. He'd make a feature-length movie, Bannon told Mansour, and he insisted upon taking complete control and financing it himself -- to the tune of $1 million.

The fruits of that initial conversation are now complete. The result is a two-hour-long, sweeping epic.

When it premieres in Iowa next month, the film is poised to serve as a galvanizing prelude to Palin's prospective presidential campaign -- an unconventional reintroduction to the nation that she and her political team have spent months eagerly anticipating, even as Beltway Republicans have largely concluded that she won't run.

Bannon, a former naval officer and ex-Goldman Sachs banker, sees his documentary as the first step in Palin's effort to rebuild her image in the eyes of voters who may have soured on her, yet might reconsider if old caricatures begin to fade.

RealClearPolitics was recently given an exclusive screening of a rough cut of the now finished film, which Bannon designed, in part, to help catapult Palin from the presidential afterthought she has become in the eyes of many pundits directly to the front lines of the 2012 GOP conversation.

You're forgetting about all that fire in her belly. Personally, I think it's just a bad bout of endometriosis from all that late-life pregnancy.

But maybe her, Pawlenty, and Santorum are going to try to combine their low-single-digit campaigns into some kind of awful Voltron of vague appeals to evangelicalism and Reaganomics.
