So Arma II has gone F2P. I played through some of the single player, but I am utterly mystified by the multiplayer. Who wants to be mystified with me?

I've joined two servers so far and I still don't know how to team chat.
Or where anyone else is.
Or what side I'm on.
Or what I'm supposed to be doing.
Really it seems like I spawned in the middle of a forest with a gun and there's just... nobody here.
I can see messages every once in a while about people getting killed.
But that's about it. Everyone else must be playing somewhere far away from me on this giant-ass map.

made my way towards the "AO" (action... overload?)
and then wandered through a town that was filled with corpses
there were some helicopters buzzing by, couldn't tell if they were friendly or not so I didn't shoot at them
eventually found some dudes that I couldn't talk to, but they weren't shooting me so I guess they're on my team?
followed them to yet another helicopter, but this guy knew what he was doing and flew us to the enemy base, where we were supposed to stop a convoy
I blew up part of the convoy! and a dude who was guarding it
then I got shot, which made me unable to stand upright, but I could crawl along the ground very slowly, and for some reason, roll over
managed to crawl my way up hill and fire down at the convoy as it approached until someone noticed and ran over me
this seems like a completely different game
What is cut from the video is 2 1/2 hours of waiting for command to give your squad leader a heading

For what its worth, this version doesn't come with the campaign, and I don't think it can use any mods.

I got in to a game with people. I didn't recognize anyone, then died a little bit. I DID, however, manage to get into a gun emplacement and shoot at a hill.
