TRINITY: Souls of Zill O'll
Platform: PS3
Genre: Action-JRPG
Publisher: KOEI

I’ve been very curious as to why no one has talked about this game on the PA forums, and I have a sneaking suspicion that it is because of the lack of a good thread to discuss. I fully expect this thread to probably die out within a few pages because of the lack of online, but I want to put this game into light and hopefully get a few PAers to give it a shot!

I have had this game from Gamefly in my house for over a month now. Now I really want to get another game to get my money’s worth, but the problem is: it’s just so good. I look at the reviews and wonder what the living shit they were talking about when playing this game. It’s got everything you could want from an Action-JRPG.

Here is a list of notable things about the game:
  • Randomized loot! – That’s right, the loot in the game is almost completely randomized. When you go to an area and open a chest, it will almost always be a different item. (I say chances are, because sometimes if you don’t open a chest or have too many items, the item normally remains) You can also get items that increase your chances of getting a higher quality items.
  • Skills! The game has three different souls for each of the characters. Each soul has 4 useable skills, and 4 passive skills.
  • Various quality items! The game uses a D – U scale to tell you about the quality of the items. D being the lowest quality item and U being unique. There are a TON of various unique weapons/armor that you can equip with various enhancements on them.
  • Rare monsters! Some monsters will appear with a yellow aura around them. If you kill them you will get a good item. These monsters are usually much harder than normal and have different resistances/immunities so you have to be on your toes.
  • Side quests! Each town has an Adventurer’s Guild which allows you to pick up randomized quests at a randomized location for a randomized item. Normally it’s just money, but sometimes you get some good stuff from them.
  • Arena battles! In one of the main cities you can fight in an Arena to compete for prestige and loot. You bet money and you fight. You keep the SP/XP you gain from it as well!

The game also has trolls, goblins, dragons, zombie dragons, griffons, more dragons, and chimeras. It also has a tri-attack, which allows you to kill bosses/large monsters in one hit when you get their hit points down to about 10-15%. There is also a casino where you could bet your hard earned gold to win coins which you turn around and purchase some good unique loot.

Combat is pretty standard for a Action RPG. You have 3 buttons: Square, Triangle, and Circle. (X is used to jump) And you assign each button an attack, and you get an additional page using R2. So overall you can have 6 skills available instantly. If you need to change it up, then you can do that mid battle as well.

There are 3 different characters in the game: Areus, Dagda, and Serene.
trinity-feature.jpg
Areus is a swordsman that uses the magic Fire/Ice. He's basically the main character in the game and used most often since he is very versatile.
trinity-souls-of-zill-oll-20090601000642823_640w.jpg
Dagda is a hand to hand fighter that uses Lightning. Used primarily for bosses as he does major damage to them. Very high HP and damage, but attacks slow.

Serene is an agile fighter that uses Wind/Ice. Very good against fast moving monsters and flying ones. Can eventually learn stealth.

Each character is used to make certain boss fights easier to manage. You can switch characters easily by pressing L2.

I am currently at about 45 hours into the game and I think I’m nearing the end… It looks like the highest level is possibly 60, but I’m not sure yet. I just hit level 50 and I’m having a blast with the game! The story isn’t half bad either.

So please give it a shot... And please post any questions for the game that you have! I will certainly answer them as quickly as possible.

(HINT: If you click the RS it will target a monster allowing you to keep it in the center of the screen)

I did play the Demo for this game, but didn't think it was particularly interesting.
Ever notice how Japanese games with a trio of protagonists always seem to be loosely based on Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei?

I will second the statement that this game is definitely worth a look, but not for the combat (which is very simple) or the areas (which are recycled ad nasuem over cookie cutter quests). It takes a bit to get going, but I really enjoyed the story. The game has one of the saddest happy endings I have ever seen.

    I didn't realize there was a demo. :P

And how do you mean? I have minimal knowledge on the Three Kingdoms story.

Oh man... I'm real nervous now.
I just found out that both Areus and Madea are grandchildren to Balor (knew Areus). Now I'm heading to the place at the top left of the map... I cannot seem to remember the name.

Fireball + Flamestrike + Fireball seem to kill almost everything I need to.

It sounds pretty good. I'll watch for it to get cheaper but I just have too many games right now.

Yeah I'm looking online right now for a cheap place to pick it up, but it looks like it's still $50-60.

I've found 35$ but that's still a little rich right now. I've played about 15 minutes each of inFamous 2, Alice, Shadows of the Damned, Trenched and DWG3 is coming AND I still have to keep up in RIFT, Champions, Terraria and Mincraft. And I have about an hour a day to play and then only 4 days a week.

Just picked this game up last week to the GAF thread saying lots of good things about it (and comparing it to Nier). Haven't played it yet.
