Welcome to the Ark!
Now available on PC, XBox 360 and PS3!

Currently retailing on consoles for around $40! Still $50 on Steam.
The Agents of Change DLC is (finally) avaiable on all platforms for $10 (or 800 MS Points). If you missed the free-to-download period during the first two weeks after its release, tough luck.

BRINK INFO

Brink is at its core a class-based, teamwork-oriented multiplayer shooter developed by Splash Damage (of Enemy Territory fame) that emphasizes speed, fluidity and flexibility above all else. Matches can often become as unpredictable and violent as the ocean waves, so you'll need to think fast and be ready to change tactics or classes at a moment's notice to help your team stay afloat. Gameplay in Brink is very kinetic: staying mobile and sticking close to your friends is just as important as gunning down enemies using your "l33t ski1zz".

setting.jpg
Brink takes place on the Ark. Built in the near-future as part of a contemporary green vision, the Ark was a model for sustainable living. The massive man-made floating city became a home to the scientists and thinkers focused on making the vision a reality, while its wealthy patrons built a recreational paradise. But soon the threat of a global environmental crisis became real: glaciers melted, sea levels rose, and the very survival of humanity was threatened. Thousands from around the globe fled to the Ark as a last hope. Refugees clung to survival however they could, while the original founders and their descendants struggled to maintain the island.

Now, existing in 2045, A whole generation has grown up on the Ark, and while it was originally supposed to house around 5,000 people, it now houses around 50,000. Now, the Ark has lost contact with what remained of the mainland and exists in total isolation. As the Ark's supposedly renewable resources dwindle, the balance of power threatens to unravel and throw competing social factions into a horrific conflict.

gameplayk.jpg
At its heart, Brink is a spiritual successor to Splash Damage's previous two games, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Two teams battle over a series of linked objectives, one team attacking, the other defending. Objective types include destruction, capture-the-flag/item, escort and many more. Sub objectives like opening up side routes or capturing command posts can also be completed to give either side a tactical advantage.

Staying Classy
The majority of Brink's gameplay is centered around a quartet of classes, each with unique basic abilities and specialized skills that can further define what role you'd personally like that class to fill in combat. These skills can be purchased upon leveling up your character, on top of general-use cross-class "universal skills". Choosing which skills to get is crucial; haphazardly picking ones that sound good in theory but don't mesh well with your playstyle can hamper your effectiveness, but you can always opt to "de-level" yourself by one and reallocate your skill points freely. You can switch classes at any time by visiting Command Posts placed in strategic areas around the battlefield that are under your team's control. Here's the basic rundown of what each class can do:

Soldiers are explosives experts and the vanguard of most offensive charges. They can place High Explosive Charges on mission-critical structures that must be defended from enemy Engineers until detonation. In addition to the basic Frag Grenades all classes can throw, Soldiers have the ability to throw firebombs that instantly knock down and disrupt opponents caught in the explosion. They are also responsible for keeping their teammates and themselves stocked with ammunition. Soldiers can choose to further their effectiveness with frags by getting skills that increase their blast radius, damage or cooldown time, or opt for "specialty" explosives: disorienting Flashbangs and remote-detonated Satchel Charges. They can also get Armor Piercing ammunition for themselves, increase the ammo supplied to them and friendlies, get extra passive damage reduction and gain the ability to Scavenge fallen enemies to replenish some of their Supply Meter.

Engineers are versatile offensive and defensive supporters, and the only class capable of disarming enemy explosives and HackBoxes planted on objectives by Operatives. They can innately boost their teammates' or their own weapon damage, and strategically plant a landmine which will critically injure any enemies who trigger them; they can also construct and repair certain objects in the environment, such as machine gun emplacements and structures that provide new routes for allies. Special skills range from the ability to deploy sentry turrets of varying sizes; further boosting their team's damage capabilities; doling out protective Kevlar Armor; improving the stat bonuses of friendly command posts; placing an extra landmine; and improving their own ability to construct or diffuse objects.

Medics, as one can imagine, are a team's literal lifeline: they are responsible for healing and buffing teammates or themselves by one extra "pip" of health, and can deploy important Revive Syringes to incapacitated teammates and mission-critical VIP's to get them back on their feet. Special Medic skills range from further improving their Health Boosts; gaining the ability to revive themselves on the spot rather than wait for other friendly Medics; providing temporary Boosts to allies' sprint speed and natural healing capabilities; Adrenaline Boosting teammates so they can ignore damage done to them until the effect wears off; and a getting a special Lazarus Grenade that can revive multiple friendlies in the blast radius with minimal health.

Operatives are Brink's "spy" class, specializing in sabotaging and disrupting enemy operations. They can plant HackBoxes on objectives which need their full attention while the hack is in process, though they can suspend and later continue the hack if they need to do something else. They also have the unique abilities to spot enemy deployables like mines and disguise as killed enemies, infiltrate their ranks, and conduct operations from behind their lines. Good operatives use stealth and surprise to their advantage, drawing unwanted attention away from their teammates while messing up their enemies in various ways. Operatives can gain the abilities to Comms Hack downed adversaries, revealing their whole team's positions to your allies' radars temporarily; hack enemy turrets to make them yours and control friendly turrets remotely; firewall controlled command posts so enemies take longer to claim them; toss Caltrops Grenades which shower areas with spikes damaging enemies who move quickly through them, Sticky Bombs that can attach onto areas or enemies and explode after time, or EMP Grenades that disable mission-critical devices and turrets temporarily; and the option to detonate a Cortex Bomb when incapped, heavily damaging any unwary enemies close enough to your body as a final "eff you".

Be S.M.A.R.T.!
One of Brink's most unique mechanics is the S.M.A.R.T. movement system, short for "Smooth Movement Across Random Terrain". S.M.A.R.T. allow you to seamlessly vault over, mantle, climb up or slide under objects and obstacles in the environment; you can hold down the S.M.A.R.T. button to perform these maneuvers automatically or manually do them with the appropriate control inputs. This video details the basics of S.M.A.R.T.:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpTwj703WTA

Remember that your movement abilities are affected by which Body Type your character currently is, so be careful!

Body Building
Adding to Brink's depth is the ability to change your character's Body Type, which affects their constitution, movement abilities and weapon choices. This can be done between matches in the Appearance menu, but not while in-game.

Medium: The default, starting body type. Can perform basic parkour and some advanced parkour like wall climbing. They have a moderate amount of health and can use up to medium-class weapons.

Heavy (unlocked at Level 5): Big, fat, and hard to kill, heavies are the tanks on the battlefields of the Ark. They have lots of health but slower movement speed and cannot climb anything above their height. In return they have access to all weapons including special heavy weapons - Light Machine Guns, a Minigun, and automatic Grenade Launchers and Shotguns - which can devastate opponents when used correctly.

Light (unlocked at Level 7): Running here there and everywhere, the Light class are the darlings of the S.M.A.R.T. system. They're able to climb anywhere, jump off walls and get to places other classes couldn't dream of, trading lower health for increased mobility. SMGs and Pistols are the Light's tools of the trade.

Game Modes
Brink's Campaign mode can be played in Single Player, online Co-op or Versus multiplayer. The story and gameplay are the same in each mode, and the missions can be played in any order (though there is a story progression through both of the 8-mission campaigns). There is no traditional on-rails single player story against waves of enemies. Freeplay Mode allows for a more flexible experience, with Objective games similar to the Campaign's setup, and Stopwatch games where each team plays a full game as both Security and Resistance, with the attacking team who completes the map the fastest (or makes the most headway before time runs out) winning overall.

There are also challenge maps that can be completed to unlock weapons and weapon attachments. Challenge maps will reinforce basic gameplay mechanics as well as teach advanced gameplay techniques, and will feature multiple levels of difficulty. There are three tiers of difficulty for each challenge, and completing the third tier will allow you to post your time onto the online Leaderboards.

customization.jpg

Customization is Brink's other big touted feature. You can tweak your character's look, voice, clothes, weapon loadout/attachments and skills. Like an RPG or MMO, you can have up to 10 different characters, each with their own look and skill loadout.

THERE ARE NO FEMALE PLAYER MODELS IN BRINK. SORRY, THAT'S JUST THE WAY IT IS.

Clothes
There are dozens of pieces of clothing and character customization options, including tattoos, piercings and headgear. Clothing options are faction specific, and you can customize the look of each of your characters (up to 10) separately. Clothing items are unlocked by earning XP and Leveling up, which is accomplished by completing just about any action in the game.

Weapons
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tI4y2P0r7K0
Weapon and attachment unlocks are only obtainable through completing challenges, which are short bits of gameplay used to teach both basic and advanced tactics in the game. These provide various tweaks that improve some aspects of weapons (such as stability, accuracy or reloading speed) while negatively influencing others, so think carefully about how you want to trick out your guns. Light Weapons include accurate and fast-firing Submachine Guns, trusty Pistols that provide an offhand knife for extra melee damage rather than knockdown, and Light Rifles for sniping purposes. Medium Weapons include Assault Rifles that do great damage at mid-long range but can get rather inaccurate with prolonged fire, a pump-action shotgun, and a single-shot Grenade Launcher. Heavy Weapons add powerful Light Machine Guns to the mix as well as an intimidating Minigun, Auto Shotgun, and a six-shot Grenade Launcher.

    Known Issues / Fixes
The 360 version has sketchy public online play atm. Splash damage has promised a fix, but no time table has been given.
    • Playing in private matches (with PA people of course ;-)) is supposedly a much better experience. Hit up the PABrink metatag on the 360 to find some games

A small number of players have had issues with getting the game to run at all on PC. Game usually crashes out at splash screen.
    • No known cause, and no fix yet. Happens on Windows XP/Vista/7, Intel and AMD cpus, nVidia and ATI graphics cards.

Poor performance on computers with ATI graphics cards
    • There is a driver hotfix (11.5a) available, but it doesn't seem to help the issue much.
Working on a custom config file to mitigate this, more details to follow.

    Grid lines on some textures
    • Fixed in the 5/13 Brink PC patch.

    All textures are solid blue

I have to agree with the top of the 2nd OP post.
Brink can be a fun but also frustrating game.

When things click and people work together, its fantastic. The problem lies though in that almost all the rounds I played, even at cap, were just my team either dominating, or being dominated. No real middle ground or back and forth.

I look forward to future patches / upcoming DLC addressing some of the more pressing issues.

I wonder if it was Bethesda's decision to charge for the first DLC.

When Brink works, it is an amazing game. I one of a few dozen people playing on ps3, and it runs very smooth 95% of the time. The frame rate is lower the Black Ops, but the good network connections combine with SMART to make it feel like a much more fluid game.

Yeah, I have so much more fun playing this than TF2, once you get the issues out of the way. Luckily, the biggest ones seem to have been dealt with.

Unfortunately, those first few days/weeks are super critical, and it seems they flubbed it. Oh well. At least there are still always servers full, even if nobody I know still plays.

Such is the perfect storm of cold critical reception, unfortunate technical problems and players giving up far too early before the game even gets a chance to become better. Brink's still an awesome game when all is said and done, but it has so much working against it, and that kind of damage is irreversible nowadays. I regret nothing though. My "Best Game Nobody Played" of this year.

Not really, I gave this game a fair shot. I played through all it's glitches at the start. The invisible enemies glitch and the no sound glitch. They should have patched those problems day 1 or week 1. Not week 2.5.

It's fun until you realize you're not playing against real people. By that time you realize how silly they coded their bot AI (if you ask me I think they used the idea the AI would try to use the upper tier skills, but if you're lower leveled; the bots have to be around your level so those upper tier skills are unavailable to them so they stagger around a bit and do nothing). It seems if you enter a lvl 15-20 game they play a bit better.

And if you do play against people, be prepared to be dominated or dominate. Like someone said previously, there is no middle ground; even with a smart tactical plan to cause a diversion will only give you 15-30 secs of leeway (and chances are you might be out of place/commission when you get those 15-30 secs). I've noticed that most of the time I've been stomped in, their gear is a revolver and a sniper. A medium body build with the 2 pips health buff can save you from one sniper shot if it's not in the head.

They just need to do some tweaks and balances for the classes/weapons and actually add 1-2 more game modes with maps. I don't know how people who have this game not notice there are only 2 types of game mode and not say "This is it? They priced it as a $60 game compared to BLOPs or any other shooter we get a whole lot less?". Co-op campaign or versus campaign.

I think Brink's greatest virtue is its biggest problem.

It's a multiplayer game fully focused on teamwork, in everything is oriented on doing the objectives, in supporting each other and being competitive. So when both teams are good, your skill level is at least like the average of the teams and the teams are comparable in skills (with the attacker team having to be a bit better than the defender team, given the actual bias of the maps), the game is great.

The problem is in the games where one of these factors is not exactly right, in these matches one team owns the other without problem and the game is not fun anymore.

    They need to
a)rebalance the spawn timers for each wave (-1 sec. to atatcker, +1 or +2 sec. to defenders).
b)Enforce a more even leveled battlefield shuffling players to teams following their skill factor.

Actually, while I've experienced my fair share of rolls (on 360 at least), I've also had plenty of good, competitive matches with full (or close to full) teams of players that came down to either side taking advantage of one brief window of opportunity to get the momentum in their favor. It's just that people are online so infrequently right now that you don't get to have those kinds of games very often. I agree about the need for tweaks, and if the game didn't ship in such poor condition/SD didn't spend the past two months fixing said condition I'm sure we'd be seeing more balance patches like the one that was just released on Steam (and will be making its way to consoles around the same time as the DLC). Again, lots of bad timing and bad luck which could've been avoided if the game had just been tested and polished for another month or so before release.

The problem with adding more game types to an objective-centric game like Brink, unlike a Team Fortress 2 where there's only one real objective for each team to fight over and no other side-missions, is that there's only so much you can do within that formula without ticking off a major portion of the player base. The maps and objectives right now are so varied in their core designs that I personally don't mind having not having other game types due to how frantic and unpredictable each map can play out depending on each team's player skills, character skills or class makeup. I've certainly been getting my money's worth, mostly because I can appreciate and enjoy what the game does without sweating the details.

I'm playing around with Brink still, shit has halved since I dropped it a few weeks ago for a bit, which is always sad with a multiplayer-focused game.

    But it remains nice!

My only issue going back in is that everyone everywhere figured out the Carb-9. It just works better than all other guns, because it has a cone small enough to headshot people so efficiently that it outdamages all other guns even at long distance.

Are there still any PA servers?

The only reason Brink isn't my "most disappointing title of the year" is because of Duke Nukem Forever. It's so frustrating and disappointing not only because it has so much potential, but because it gets so many things right, while getting others completely wrong: why they ever thought that creating an essentially multiplayer-only game with no lobby or party system is totally beyond me. I mean, what were they thinking?

The game's great when it works, though. Because of this, I can get past the lack of a lobby system; it really is a blast to play with a group full of friends, all working together. When nobody else is on, though, it's unplayable. Even if you've got three or four people together, it's still a waste of time; those bots will absolutely rape you at higher levels if you don't have a full team. When I was the only person on, I'd queue up by myself, and it would almost always put me on a team full of bots against three or four people. Why? If there's room for another human on the side with human players, why shouldn't I get put on that team?

Another problem I had was more-or-less outside of the game's control: I played a dedicated Medic all the way to level 20 right off the bat, and I loved it. Medic is a lot of fun, especially if you're a points-whore like me, because they always top the charts. Our team of guys only had a few Medics (like, me and another guy, basically), so I was an important member of the squad. Once I hit 20, though, I wanted to play another class, just like everyone else. Unfortunately, nobody else decided to play a Medic, so I could either bring along my new Engineer/Operative (and be pretty useless, since everyone else is playing the same class), or I could bring along my level 20 Medic, and we could actually get shit done.

Brink had so much potential. It's really a shame the way it turned out.

Some maps are mostly alright even with the original spawn times, like Container City if you can get past the door, Resort if attackers don't get pinned in their spawn, etc.

Changing the respawn timers is like the laziest possible way to rebalance the maps, because unless you have specific spawn timers for each map it's not going to work for all of them.

Yeah, lots of people attack the maps saying they are horrible. I think they are pretty good, they need just a little adjustment in respawn timers. Most of the sections of each map have at least three routes (or more) from the initial spawn to the objective path, both attackers and defenders.

That said, they are not perfect, the initial section of CC and Resort could be improved with an extra route, for example.
edit: oh look the previous poster also mentions CC and Resort beginning!

In practical terms, redesigning the maps isn't going to happen, it's too much work. The problem is SD being too damn slow at updating the spawn timers, something that can be done in a moment and should be done already two weeks ago.

Having respawn timers adjust for your teams role (atk/def) and current objective location in relation to your spawn would go a long way I would think. Objectives close to the defenders spawn are more or less progress stoppers for the attacking team. And if the defenders are competent, attackers are basically ramming their head into a wall for upwards to 10 mins. Having a basic timer and not accounting for run time seems a bit silly to me.

Edit: IGN posted some screens of the of the new DLC. Nothing really mind blowing. It pretty much looks like more Brink. Hah

If they did, good on them. I haven't played in bit, I was waiting for the dlc tbh.

If I get this game from Gamefly will I be able to play it online, or will I have to pay the $10 or whatever to do that?

I don't think there's an online pass to purchase.

Whether or not you'll be able to play online is a crapshoot though.

As long as I don't have to buy a pass. :)

I don't remember having to download a pass when the game came out, but I'm not 100% on that.

there was no online pass, the only code you get is to see your stats on the game site, and that is accessed in game. online connectivity and lag issues have improved significantly so don't listen to people still harping on that. definitely worth a rental at least, and easy achievements too!

PC doesn't need a pass and everything I'm reading after a google search says consoles don't either. You should be ok.

Online pass? Where the heck did this idea come from? Brink's never needed any separate fees to play online; it's the main meat of the game!

From the pictures Decoy posted it looks like the Lab map is going to have a lot of tight areas full of objects to get behind and vault over. Hopefully Founders Tower will have more verticality. Wonder how that'll play into teams' strategies?
