I had to RMA my graphics card recently.

The power had fluttered and when I restarted my computer the card was dead.

What kind of new surge protector should I get?

For best liquid cooling results submerge your computer into your fish tank.

Really I'd go with a slightly older business class laptop, like a Dell Latitude E5420 or IBM Thinkpad X201. They're not always the prettiest, but they tend to have better build quality and toughness than consumer laptops, which can be a pretty big deal when you're overseas.

I put a computer together on Newegg earlier for $1690. Could probably shave $100-150 off of that by getting the ram and CPU from Microcenter.

It was everything but a case and PSU. Included a 27" monitor, new mouse, and new headset in on that.

    Radeon 6970 2GB
    i7 2600k
    8GB of DDR3 2133
    128GB Sata 3.0 SSD
And a Z68 mobo with the crossfire from Gigabyte

Not that I am buying right now. Just getting an idea of prices before I build a new on in a few months. I'll probably swap the mobo for one that does SLI and get a GTX 570, though.

I assume it is the bitcoin crash at Mt. Gox

hilariously, in a system that takes pride in not having a central authority that controls monetary policy, the exchange simply cancelled all the transactions following the sell-off that resulted from the hacking of an account that had a massive position in bitcoin

it's actually a pretty shitty graph since it's only two dimensional

here is another one that reflects transaction volume:

notice that the sale volume for $0.01 is substantially larger than any of the other transactions

that's because the people who trade in bitcoin are fucking retarded

Here's one thing you should know: Do not buy Acer laptops.

A friend of mine bought one which was severely overpriced, labeled as a gaming laptop despite not really having the specs for it (It did have half a decent GPU though) and the kicker was that, for some reason, updating the drivers did not work. His gaming laptop ended up only being capable of playing wow, and after like 2 years it died.

Also worth noting is that when I worked at a computer repair shop the owner had piles of computers for scrapping in the back room. The highest pile was always Acer.

Otherwise, as someone else said, business laptops are usually pretty robust. A lot of low end consumer models (around the 500-700€/$) are usually fairly shitty. There are some exceptions of course, but I haven't looked at laptops for a while since I avoid working on the hardware on them if I can avoid it.

So this is kind of related and I'm cross-posting it because it is interesting:
my sister got tdss on her computer, malwarebytes found and removed it.. how good should I sleep without reinstalling everything? :P

Kaspersky offers a free download 'TDSSKiller'. Works great.

TDSSKiller is an excellent suggestion (though I believe it only works on x86 systems - could be wrong, but I'm not sure). Another measure you can take would be to boot from a LiveCD or USB stick and use a scanner from outside the OS, where the rootkit can't hide as easily.

On the Topic of TDSS/TDL, recently Kaspersky did an interesting write up of the threat's evolution here. Some interesting tidbits include an examination of the affiliate program (i.e. people get paid to infect machines, to the tune of $20 - $200 per 1,000 infections, depending on region), and an analysis of the bootkit component of TDL, which includes its own antivirus to remove rival infections. The botnet is also controlled via a public P2P system, where newly infected machines automatically connect, and are then given specific instructions to connect to other TDSS infected machines - effectively creating a private P2P network which the malware authors control. Not only does control of such a network decentralize their command and control (meaning the network is harder to take out), but they've started to monetize the P2P network. By installing proxy-server type software on infected machines, TDL controllers are offering anonymous internet browsing for all who want to pay $100 a month. Essentially, if you pay for this service you connect to a proxy server that is (in actually) someone else's infected computer. So activity from your end looks to be originating from the victim's IP.

And perhaps the most notable element of the article? Kaspersky managed to penetrate the TDL botnet's command and control databases, where they found some interesting data:
According to these databases, in just the first three months of 2011 alone, TDL-4 infected 4,524,488 computers around the world.

    Good God Damn.

IT security and malware design in particular ain't what it used to be.

Very interesting if I do say so myself.

Think of it as a combination of facebook and twitter, but with privacy options

You post stuff on your "wall", where you can choose what circles that stuff goes to

So you, say, want to notify all of SE++ how awesome dicks are, you select your SE++ circle and post that important bit of information-
    No one else sees this

Now the tricky part is that you can disallow re-sharing of stuff, so it actually stays in circles
Plus you can ad people to circles that are not in google+, which means the messages go out by mail.

Edit: This also means that circles are one-sided. You don't join a circle, you make your own or someone else puts you in theirs
