You seriously want to bring the freakin Hardcover on 2 flights? You prepared to pay for a seat for it?
:\
For most normal uses, the kindle model is the best model.
I mean, in the optimal reading light, i can read on the actual kindle. Early in the morning or late at night I can pick it up where I left off on the iPad and not need to worry about a book light, and for any other time I'm looking to kill a few minutes I can bring it up on my phone.
The only downside is I can never lend the book to someone else, but I didn't really do that very often anyway.
HT, you're buying the ebook. I don't know why you're dragging your feet on this.
I read all the Harry Potters on my phone and now Dance and have had no problems whatsoever.
I know I should be more confident with GRRM, but damn this thing took a long time to come out.

It reads fine to me. I'm about 50 pages in. So far, I'm enjoying it immensely.. Tyrion's first chapter was excellent, as was Daenerys'.
As is Jon's.
This doesn't. And since he said that he basically re-wrote everything he had finished with Feast, I'm not too worried about it.
I guess I'll spoiler this, but it's related to the preview chapters GRRM's been rotating on his site...
The preview chapters were released years ago and GRRM is constantly editing and re-writing, so I wouldn't expect them to be the same.
I've just read the prologue and most of the first chapter. Hope to dig in tonight.

some writers spend a decade on books a quarter of this size. I literally have no idea where you'd get the impression that anything here would be "hastily edited."
Actual Play: Mage: the Awakening - At the Edge of All Things
I'm always fond of the part in stories where the guy wakes up in a rich man's house with servants waiting on his every whim. You know how some people read adventure stories to live vicariously through the brave, handsome hero as he fights through perils and gets the girl? I get my vicarious thrills reading about sleeping in a big bed and eating and drinking as much as you want without paying a dime.

Also whores.

It was kind of an unconscious jab at Twilight; I don't read that crap, but I've heard that the last book or so was filled with terrible spelling errors and contradictory plot holes that basically said "this shit ain't got quality control".
Far be it from me to dare suggest GRRM would pull something like that, but after hearing how he spent years having chapters piling up without having a real clear idea in the order they should be put in the book, I couldn't help but be slightly concerned.
So with that said, I'm not really worried if the book is well-written or not. I'm more curious to find out whether this counts as a "transition volume", or if there will be some significant game-changers as was scene in the third book.
Basically I'm hoping it's closer to ASOS than AFFC. I don't want to have to endure another five years or so when he decides to drop an unresolved cliffhanger in this book.

Why not have the Kindle cover that comes with a booklight that runs off the Kindle's own battery?

Which, by the way, is fantastic.

bran chapter: alright...
tyrion chapter: YES
"Gee I sure hate not being able to walk. I wish I could fly like a bird....ooh, there's a bird right now"
"Hey Bran here's an old story about someone more awesome than you that will take up 3/4 of your chapter"
"Wow what a great story. Do you think someday I could be like that awesome person you mentioned?"
"Sure, some things are possible. Just because you're crippled now doesn't mean you're not going to magically re-align your shattered spine."
"Uh oh, something dangerous is approaching! I guess we better be prepared for an exciting-oh, nevermind, we managed to sneak by it"

EDIT: Val, yeah. I read that, and it sunk in like 3 "pages" later. My face almost split in half from smiling.

And the hardcover is beautiful, kindle is just for when I can't carry books (travel or school).
They've all been preordered, and I'm deathly afraid of a customer coming in and asking for their copy and discovering that their copy is the one in my lap, covered in my grubby fingerprints.
Are they individually labeled or something?
And I thought the Bran POV chapters were my favorite of all of them in this book.
Welcome to the world on this side.
That was the only spoiler that I saw before the book came out; I thought it was fake because "How the hell could someone know this. . ."
