I think the wave of the future will be when physical books come with a key you can redeem for a digital version

I was gonna hold true and not buy a hardcover because damn it costs $26 but I'm gonna be on a plane tomorrow afternoon for 5 hours and then again next week for 5 hours and this would be a perfect plane book.

You seriously want to bring the freakin Hardcover on 2 flights? You prepared to pay for a seat for it?

It costs only $15 for the Kindle version, and you have an Android phone. Just buy it, you big baby.

For most normal uses, the kindle model is the best model.

I mean, in the optimal reading light, i can read on the actual kindle. Early in the morning or late at night I can pick it up where I left off on the iPad and not need to worry about a book light, and for any other time I'm looking to kill a few minutes I can bring it up on my phone.

The only downside is I can never lend the book to someone else, but I didn't really do that very often anyway.

Hardtarget already knows this, but the cover won't match the books he already owns. Nor will book 6's match anything before it, etc. So really the only sane thing to do if you're OCD about having a full set is to wait until the last book comes out and rebuy everything. Until then, buy the ebook and enjoy not having to lug around a tome and hold it up to read for hours at a time.

HT, you're buying the ebook. I don't know why you're dragging your feet on this. ;)

I will literally never read a book on my phone. my ipad sure no problem but no way will I ever give myself a eye hemorrhage trying to read a book on my android screen.

I read all the Harry Potters on my phone and now Dance and have had no problems whatsoever.

My copy won't likely arrive until tomorrow (ordered late Sunday night, was hesitant), but I am curious how it reads so far. Does it feel like something that was written several years ago and hastily edited?

I know I should be more confident with GRRM, but damn this thing took a long time to come out.

It reads fine to me. I'm about 50 pages in. So far, I'm enjoying it immensely.. Tyrion's first chapter was excellent, as was Daenerys'.

You know how The Dark Tower almost feels like 2 different series (1-4, 5-7)?

This doesn't. And since he said that he basically re-wrote everything he had finished with Feast, I'm not too worried about it.

I guess I'll spoiler this, but it's related to the preview chapters GRRM's been rotating on his site...

The preview chapters were released years ago and GRRM is constantly editing and re-writing, so I wouldn't expect them to be the same.

I sure am glad I didn't pay 12+ dollars for release day shipping, considering the book arrived on release day anyway.

I've just read the prologue and most of the first chapter. Hope to dig in tonight.

I'm 25% though the book, and I'm finding it MUCH easier to get into than Feast. There's no forcing myself through any of the POVs, I'm genuinely interested in everything everyone's doing, even the ones who are just traveling from A to B

some writers spend a decade on books a quarter of this size. I literally have no idea where you'd get the impression that anything here would be "hastily edited."

It was kind of an unconscious jab at Twilight; I don't read that crap, but I've heard that the last book or so was filled with terrible spelling errors and contradictory plot holes that basically said "this shit ain't got quality control".

Far be it from me to dare suggest GRRM would pull something like that, but after hearing how he spent years having chapters piling up without having a real clear idea in the order they should be put in the book, I couldn't help but be slightly concerned.

So with that said, I'm not really worried if the book is well-written or not. I'm more curious to find out whether this counts as a "transition volume", or if there will be some significant game-changers as was scene in the third book.

Basically I'm hoping it's closer to ASOS than AFFC. I don't want to have to endure another five years or so when he decides to drop an unresolved cliffhanger in this book.

Why not have the Kindle cover that comes with a booklight that runs off the Kindle's own battery?

I haven't even read the book yet and I can tell you how Bran chapters are going to go:

"Gee I sure hate not being able to walk. I wish I could fly like a bird....ooh, there's a bird right now"

"Hey Bran here's an old story about someone more awesome than you that will take up 3/4 of your chapter"

"Wow what a great story. Do you think someday I could be like that awesome person you mentioned?"

"Sure, some things are possible. Just because you're crippled now doesn't mean you're not going to magically re-align your shattered spine."

"Uh oh, something dangerous is approaching! I guess we better be prepared for an exciting-oh, nevermind, we managed to sneak by it"

Well, logically, if all the others go out and all that's left is the one ruzkin has left his fingerprints on (I recommend gloves, by the way), then by process of elimination the last one belongs to the last customer to come in for his preordered book.

And I thought the Bran POV chapters were my favorite of all of them in this book.
