What were they thinking? The original concept for the Heavy Rifle looks so much cooler then the generic "Doom movie" gun we ended up getting.

the "5.56 MM" cracks me up

You know mini-guns in real life? Those shoot hand-gun size bullets. Hence the name.

That actually isn't true. The M134, for example, fires 7.62mm rounds, and most similar weapons also fire rifle-caliber bullets. The "mini" is relative to larger gatling-style guns like the 20mm Vulcan cannon used in most US fighter aircraft.

    Edit: Boooooogduuuuuud!!!!

You may be thinking of a "submachinegun" (sometimes called a "machine pistol," like the one in the game). A submachinegun (such as the real life MP5, or something like the M1 Thompson from World War 2) by definition uses handgun-caliber rounds, while strictly speaking a machinegun fires at least rifle-caliber rounds.

Another note. Did I mention how gamebreaking the Typhoon is? I think I need to restate that. It's a cheat code... that the game gives to you for free.

And +1. You get Ghost/Smooth Operator if Robots or Turrets kill all enemies in a section even if -they- trip hostile alarmed states. As long as you yourself aren't spotted eating your popcorn, you're good.

I went non-lethal and ghost for most missions. I also tried to hunt down all the possible routes in the level (even if I didn't particularly need them.)

I think you may be able to use an explosive on the wall and have it only KO the guy while alarming the other, but haven't tried. Instead of punching through that wall, you can descend the fire escape and go up to the burning car or wherever you can overhear the two guys nearby talking. When they're done talking, I think one of them leaves (or left for whatever reason on my run, which was after hiding again after being seen and alarmed state after they yelled at me to go home), which makes it easy to sneak along the left path hugging the wall and around the semi trailer to the door. Or you could tranq rifle them, but that usually draws the crowd so you'll have to keep sniping. Alternatively: cloak.

Yeah, armor-piercing pistol is your best bet for realistic headshots. It still took two to down a heavy Ogre dude with only one damage upgrade, but probably isn't an issue at max.

I'm finally up to Hong Kong in the original DX.

My god this is terrible. It's like every bad Asian stereotype rolled into one moderately-sized map. The voice acting alone makes me want to take out my stealth pistol and shoot myself in the head (in the game).

Well, for one thing, Hong Kong is not equivalent to China. Also, Maggie Chow is not voiced by a native Chinese person - she is voiced by the same actress who voiced Anna Navarre and both the Russian and Chinese accents are heavily affected, but I don't blame her for that, I'm certain she was directed to do so. Also, what evidence is there that the Hong Kong hub voice actors are "native Chinese"? There is a thread about this on some other forum and there are the IMDB listings, but there is no evidence of this. The names credited on IMDB are all Asian names, but that doesn't mean they are "native Chinese" - if you have some other evidence, though, I am open to reading it.

The voice acting in the original Deus Ex is pretty bad. People don't know how to inflect anything in any accent or language present in the game. In fact, it is actually jarring when someone DOES inflect something properly. One example is Jaime Reyes who sounds like his voice was generated by a computer that didn't understand English. In fact, the only consistently believable inflection comes from enemy troopers that shout stuff like "there he is!" and "I see him!" and "fat guy in a little coat!" and so on. "I speel my drink!" is another example.

So, even if I am absolutely wrong that Hong Kong is just Asian Tropeville, that's still not really my fault considering I just played 10-or-so hours of a game filled to the brim with terrible voice acting and bad accent tropes.

As for my other criticisms, well I like the theme music while you are in Hong Kong but I did roll my eyes. Also, I have never been to Hong Kong so maybe it really is that cramped but fuck, they make it look like everything is either smooshed together or hidden in the corner of a sewer.

I think it has more to do with the voiceacting in the game being bad in general.

    Edit: Beaten

This game has some really weird problems.

My HUD is completely gone, and I have no idea how to make it come back. No mini map, no quickbar, no health, nothing. No hotkeys to toggle and restarting the game or changing settings does nothing.
In fact, the quickbar itself doesn't even work. I can't switch weapons on the fly at all.

I somehow just failed the Motherly Ties quest. I think it is because a former police officer I was supposed to talk to magically disappeared. I'm not sure why. He did go alarmed for a while, but I killed all the punks in the area and none of the bodies were his so it shouldn't be that.

DX1 or are you talking about HR? Because that happens in DX1 too, though there's no conversation. You can bug "Shannon" - one of the female NPCs in Unatco - in the ladies room the first time you enter UNATCO. She even says she is going to report you. And apparently she does - if you do enter the bathroom and talk to her before Mandeley's briefing, he will chastise you for doing so.

So if that's in HR too, I guess it's a call back to DX1.
