I need to make footnotes for a college paper and can't find them in Word. When I go to help it tells me to check the references tab(which I can't find) and offers no further help. Please help.

Do you have an insert tab on the ribbon? Click that and then in this tab there should be a header&footer "group".

Edit: I only have 2010 at work so I'm flying blind here.

    There is a header&Footer group.

It lets me make a footer but I still don't know how to add those little numbers.

Footnotes are different than the footer, I believe.

nightmare, does your Word toolbar look something like this?

You can see the References tab just to the right of the Page Layout tab, or just below the "D" of "Document1." Click that and you should see an "Insert Footnote" button. Just place the cursor in your text after the word you want the footnote to reference, then hit the button.

right click on the ribbon > 'Customize the ribbon' and you can choose the visible panes via checkbox on the right column of the pop-up

I see no "Customize Ribbon" in the options menu. This is really weird.

You are using the free "starter" edition that doesn't have all the features.

    bsjezz is correct.

A little late, but LibreOffice is good, much better than OpenOffice.

Go to Tools -> 'Footnotes/Endnotes' to set it up. Then Insert -> 'Footnote/Endnote' to add one.
