Soy food is supposed to be healthy, right?

Jensen's diet also consist of painkillers and energy bars.

I completely forgot about the soy packets. And I guess HR also includes those big tubs of powdered protein too. But a big part of the Deus Ex diet are pilfered chocolate bars and half-empty beers (even if the HR bars are more akin to a Clif bar than a Snickers).

Here's an example of one of the ads. I have yet to see them, but I haven't played much since the last patch came out.

Look, can we agree that the ads bug some people and don't bug others?

Nobody is calling for a boycott, but it does piss some of us off, given the amount of advertising bombarding us as it is. Paid gaming is one of the last bastions that is ad-free, and even it is clearly under attack.

If you don't care enough about it to block it, cool. I care enough about it that I want it blocked. Hopefully, that is also cool. If not, you're a silly goose.

I admit that the ads as implemented in Deus Ex are not the most egregious affront ever, but it's very important to understand that things like in-game ads live and die by establishing precedent. The publishers want to wear down your defenses so that the next offense can be just one step more invasive than the last, and before long they've shoehorned this shit into enough games over enough years, you have gamers themselves going "big deal, they've been doing it since x game", and suddenly it's de-facto standard to expect in-game ads. I have no doubt whatsoever that publishers wish they could get away with things that most of us would find completely horrifying, and are actively working on ways to make them acceptable long-term.

This is how preorder exclusives, paying cash for cheat codes, rights-stripping EULAs, overpriced map packs, online DRM, and all manner of other industry bullshit happens.

the thing that annoys me more than the ads themselves is them getting snuck in a month after release. it just seems real shady, i dunno.

So just how intrusive are these new ads? I don't get them, and I'm surprised nobody has posted a pic up yet.

They have and they're just a banner on the loading screens. It's terrible. I can't believe they'd put an ad where I could see it and make it so intrusive.

It was a pretty vile thing Eidos Montreal did. Let's go make snide comments to all of the annoying fangirls that aren't bothered by this.

My favorite part of the game? That one mercenary dude who keeps showing up again and again if you don't kill him. I make a habit of doing nonlethal takedowns on him whenever possible, just so I can know that he wakes up every morning scared he's going to be punched by Adam Jensen.

I fucking love this game. I'm going through for the second time and I'm entering places I've never seen before. Awesome. And I have to say, going the non-hacking route on the hardest difficulty makes for a lot of resets. I went through the Police Department completely persona-non-grata and it was frigging hoot. That was the only time I didn't kill people though, can't kill cops for no good reason!

Oh man, and I didn't realize you could punch civilians. The concierge at my apartment building got cold cocked for giving me 'tude about my mirror.

And I got to complete Cloak and Daggers this round through since all the bad guys spawned in the correct spot. Man,

So, I just finally got around to finishing the game. About time, yanno? I've just been busy, don't judge me. Anyway:
    Spoiler:

On the side, I'm starting my pacifist/sneaky run. I'm also trying to get the "take-down" and "knock-out" achievements, as well. Should I be okay if I sucker punch an entire room and not get seen (ala no "alarmed" status for any of the enemies)? Because I completely did that for the first mission and didn't get either ghost or smooth operator, so I'm a little concerned.

What do you mean pacifist run? Do you mean no killing or no violence? I went no killing and got both achievements easily. There are TONs of opportunities to knock people out. I wouldn't worry about it.

There's a few places with large groups of enemies that I made a point to gas grenade when i was worried I might not get the knock out achievement my first playthrough. suffice to say one large group of people gassed was enough to put me over the top of those I just so happened to have knocked out previously.

As far as the achievements are concerned, people knocked out via gas grenades/mines count toward "Consciousness is Over-rated" but do not count towards "Opportunist." People knocked out via takedowns count toward both (but killing them won't count toward the "Consciousness" achievement, obviously).

I've gone through the first mission several times, and I've never managed to snag Smooth Operator at the end. Not sure if I'm just botching it without noticing, or if some missions it's not possible in. And I'm not certain, but I think those conversation boss confrontations (e.g. Zeke Sanders on the first mission) force you to forfeit the Ghost bonus. The few times I've paid attention to the bonuses during those levels, I haven't seen them pop after a conversation boss but I could have easily lost that before the actual confrontation.

  • AdusAdus Registered User regular
Smooth Operator doesn't exist for every mission. Mainly when a mission has no alarm to trigger. The first mission is one of those.

So figured I'd post this in here. My friend and I have this review channel on Youtube called 3Play (or well that's the name but it has to be called Thr3play on the channel since the other was taken...) But we review Deus Ex last week and put it up on Saturday. Normally Fridays but we got delayed. Check it out if you have the time!
