Need some help? We've got you covered!

    Guides
How do I buy things from the PS Store for my PSP?
Unco-ordinated recently covered this (I wasn't sure if people not knowing was a widespread issue), so I'll let his post here speak for him:
There's three ways to get PSP stuff. The first is to download it to a PS3 and then copy it across to the PSP, the second is to go directly online through a wireless connection and the third is to use the Media Manager.

Go to this website, download and install the Media Manager. Plug your PSP into your PC/Laptop and go to the PS Store within the Media Manager. If you don't have a PSN ID, you'll need to sign up for one.
I Wanna Get a Japanese PSN ID!

Well, that's not too difficult! Here's a couple of handy guides to help. A Video guide is behind the spoiler, and following it is a Step-by-Step Typed one for those of you who can't/don't look at youtube regularly!

Typed Steps for those who don't want to watch a video or something:
*) I advise to get a pen and paper for writing down what information you give (PSN ID and Password, email used, along with your security question and answer if you're so inclined.) It's not a necessary step. However, unless you can read Japanese (which if you can, you shouldn't need a guide) it will be incredibly difficult to recover your ID or password if you don't remember it otherwise.
    1) Go to the Users Slot and make a New User. Name doesn't matter, and it can be changed later.
    2) Sign into the new user.
    3) Go to the Network tab and select Sign up for Playstation Network.
    4) At the starting screen, select "Create a New Account" and then on the second screen, select Continue.
    5) On the third screen, change the country to Japan, which will automatically change the language to Japanese.
    6) On the same screen, skip the second slot (The language slot) and go directly to birthdate. A birth year of 1990 or below is advised, to avoid parental controls over what you can get on the store. The Month and Date thereafter don't matter, so pick any numbers.
    7) The third button (from left to right) is the Next button. Hit it.
    8) This screen is the User Agreement Screen. Get to the bottom row of buttons and again hit Next.
    9) This is your PSN ID and Password screen. The first slot is for an email address. It does not have to be a valid address. When you enter it, a screen will pop up; this is just informing you that this email address will be used for this account.
    10) The next slot is for your password. Any password that abides by the following rules is fine.
    - The password must contain at least six characters.
    - The password must contain at least one letter and at least one number.
    - The password must not contain a letter or a number used three or more times in a row.
    - The password must not be the same as your sign-in ID or online ID.
    - You must enter the password correctly in two fields.
    - Letters are case-sensitive.
The slot following is for confirming your Password, so reenter it.
*) The checkbox here is for saving your password. Up to your discretion.
    11) Last is your secret question. In the box provided, type whatever. If you want to try and write it down, just in case, go for it. Afterwards, hit next.
    12) Your PSN ID screen. As long as the ID you want is not taken and follows the rules below, it should be fine.
    - The online ID must be 3 to 16 characters and can consist of letters, numbers, hyphens (-) and underscores (_).
    - The online ID will be publicly displayed in the Playstation(R)Network.
    - Do not use any personally identifying information for your online ID.
    - You cannot change your online ID after it has been created.
You may have to attempt several IDs. After you do, hit Next.
    13) Name Screen. Enter whatever for the first and second boxes. The third is Gender, and is optional, so skip it if you like. Hit Next.
    14) The Address Screen. At the first box, enter five random numbers. At the second box, it opens a menu. Select the second option. For the four remaining boxes, insert whatever you'd like and then hit next.
    15) This is the Email Confirmation screen. Do not check the box. If you do, it'll send an email to your (possibly non-existent) email for account confirmation. Obviously, if the email doesn't succeed, you won't be able to use your PSN. Hit Next.
    16) This is the Final Confirmation screen. Just scroll down and hit Next. From there, you might be taken to the store. (You'll have to sign in first.) If so, look around or exit out if you like, if not, do whatever, because now you have a Japanese PSN!

    FAQ

    (Q) When does the store usually update?
    (A) There's odd nights here and there (Mostly late ones of the odd updates), but for the most part, the US Store tends to update around 5-8 PM EST. And the PAL Store tends to update around 3 PM GMT.

    (Q) Can I play all Minis on my PSP and PS3?
    (A) Most of them, yes, but not all of them. Tetris is probably the biggest example of this. (PSP-Only) It, like most things with PSN content is Developer-Reliant, so they have to make it work on both if they choose to do so.

    (Q) What about PSOne Classics? What can I play them on?
    (A) Most of the PSOne Classics (of this writing, there are 2 exceptions) are compatible with both PS3 and PSP. If you own both, you can have it on both platforms and even move your saves between the two platforms.

    (Q) Can I play PSOne games I have without buying them again?
    (A) Kind of. There is a PS3/PSP Connectivity function called Remote Play where you can play a PSOne Game from your PS3 on your PSP through the internet. It's not great, but it's workable. The PSOne game must be in the PS3 disk-tray to use Remote Play. Also note that some PSN games are also Remote Play compatible.

    (Q) I have a PS3, but no PSP. Can I still buy and play PSP games?
    (A) Unfortunately, no. While there is minimal PSP emulation on the PS3 (For Minis), it won't work for Full-Blown PSP games. Nobody knows if it is a thing that will happen.

And not to spam the thread right when it's started, but here's The Drop for this week.
    PlayStation Portable

Persona 2: Innocent Sin (Also on PSN) – The story takes place in Sumaru City, Japan, population 1,280,000. Its protagonist attends Seven Sisters High School (“Sevens” for short), whose emblem is considered a status symbol even amongst students from other schools. Soon, though, a rumor that Sevens’ emblem was actually cursed, and that wearing it would disfigure one’s face, had spread around the city. Even worse, the rumor came true. And it was only the beginning of a string of rumors becoming reality, one after another. Before long, the protagonists discover the power to summon another side of them called “Personas,” which they use to investigate the strange incidents around the city, all while facing their own personal demons as well. Time is once again on the march…

    PlayStation Network

Saints Row 2 — Saints Row 2 takes place a few years after the original. Several new upstart gangs have been able to sweep in and make their mark on Stilwater. At the same time, a multi-national conglomerate known as the Ultor Corporation has become a pivotal player in city politics, pumping millions of dollars into rebuilding the metropolis.

As leader of the Saints, you’ll have to do whatever it takes to protect the members of your gang from new enemies, including the Ultor Corporation and rival gangs.

Resident Evil 4 – The HD version of Resident Evil 4 comes to the PS3, featuring improved visuals that will enhance the player’s gaming experience. Six years have passed since Raccoon City was destroyed and the government has dismantled the Umbrella Corporation from the inside-out. But the terror is not over. Now a U.S. Agent, former Raccoon Police Officer Leon Kennedy has been dispatched on a mission to Europe to save the President’s daughter from a “crazed organization” that bares a striking behavioral resemblance to creatures found in the Arklay Mountains. Is there a connection between these foes and the horrible nightmares from the past?

Burnout Crash (Demo Available) – Burnout Crash packs countless hours of reckless chaos into an easy to pick up, but difficult to master gameplay experience. There are three explosive game modes available across 18 crash junctions in six unique locations, each requiring different skills and strategies to maximize damage and destroy everything in sight. With a variety of player vehicles to unlock, high-value targets to seek and destroy, and crazy surprise features to discover, players will be hooked on an adrenaline-fueled rampage to the top of the Crashwall.

Cubixx HD (Demo Available) – Use your laser to cut away the surfaces of a mysterious cube and free the energy within. Cutting longer lines and crossing multiple cube surfaces gives you bigger combos, but at far greater risk. Can you brave this hazardous environment and complete all 20 levels? Old-school, high score-chasing gameplay with a modern twist. Do you have what it takes to top the high score table and become number one?

Altered Beast – Destroy all enemies to rescue the fair maiden. Your powers increase when you destroy certain enemies and take their energy; once you achieve a certain energy level, you can alter your shape into that of a beast!

Bolt — In Disney’s Bolt, players take on the heroic personas of the TV star dog, Bolt, and his owner, Penny, from the high-action television series featured within the film. As Bolt, players can use his superpowers, including laser vision and his superbark, which sends out a sonic blast to devastate opponents, and as Penny, players utilize stealth, hacking skills and a wheelbar, inspired by her scooter seen in the movie, to outwit enemies.

    minis

Edge — Develop your telekinetic strength by pushing a Cube within a geometric universe. Platforms, enigmas and reflexes combine to make Edge a rich and very comprehensive game.

    PSone Classic

Chrono Trigger – Living in the seemingly peaceful kingdom of Guardia in 1000 A.D., the child Crono was chosen by guardian spirits to save the world from ultimate devastation. Though Doomsday will not happen until the year 1999, the ancient seeds of destruction were planted long ago the the evil LAVOS. Your mission in the world of Chrono Trigger is to travel back and forth through time to change the course of history, and stop LAVOS from succeeding in his dark plan. On your journey, you will battle monsters and meet many helpful people in both the past and the future. Some will become your faithful and powerful companions, while others will give you clues by telling you stories.

Final Fantasy VI — With Edgar’s tools, Terra’s magic, Sabin’s fists and the skills of a dozen additional characters, the Returners need only your help to seize victory from the Empire. Summon the power of the espers, magical creatures enslaved by the Empire.

Quite a lot this week. RE4 which may or may not have a gimped-ass trophy list (if you care about that. I do.) Persona 2: Innocent Sin for the first time in NA (I believe?) and the second-best version of Chrono Trigger you can buy. (Third if you count Wiiware and the original SNES version separately.)

Burnout Crash looks way lamer than what I expected upon hearing the name.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=094Hj6WbpCc

Cubixx HD looks like an interesting take on an old classic. Might consider picking that one up.

I too am disappointed about Burnout Crash

But mainly because it's Crash mode solely, and not because of the perspective. I know I'm in the minority but I hated Crash mode in 3, and always loathed having to do them.

Not that I think Showtime was any better, but still.

So yeah, this upcoming week. I'm still getting RE4 on PS3 even though I really want the 360 version because I already have the cash for it in my PSN wallet. RE1, 2 and 3 for PS Plus subscribers is a nice bonus, but sadly I have all three and therefore get zilch.

EDIT: Hey Darth, why is the PS1 version of Chrono Trigger better than the DS version?

    UnbreakableVow on
  • Darth_MogsDarth_Mogs Registered User regular
Because the DS version of Chrono Trigger has a ton of awful bullshit in it. I think waaaaaaaaaay back when it came out, I PM'd you about the new ending they included, but on top of that there's Fetch-Quest Mountain where you literally have to go up and down this map a ridiculous amount of times with forced battles each way if you want to beat it, the Dimensional Vortexes which give you very nice and completely broken gear at the expense of giving you a plot twist at the end that hurts to think about and some other nonsense. Of course, you could argue that it's all purely optional (unless you hate the new script as well, like me) so you don't even have to be exposed to it, but, well, it's there. And it's not there in the PS1 version. Hence, better.

Am I the only one who loved Burnout 1 through 3 and still thinks Burnout Crash looks cool?

I mean, don't get me wrong. I'd love another game like Burnout Takedown, but Crash still looks fun.

edit: Chrono Trigger is on PS1? I thought it was just SNES and then Chrono Cross was PS1. Is there any difference between SNES and PS1?

Chrono Trigger was released alongside a version of Final Fantasy IV in what's called "Final Fantasy Chronicles". It added some anime-style cutscenes, little things like a jukebox and beastiary (I think) and the customary loading times from Squeenix loaning out ports to devs who just can't do it right.

i hear the port of RE4 is the cheapest, crappest thing possible. thats sad. i was ready to spend really a ridiculous amount in the store this week (burnout crash, RE4, both square games), but now i dont know if im going to get re4 and the square games arent even coming out. so... oh well.

my ps3 died this morning, YLOD and all that. i did the hairdryer trick and got it back up and running though, so im getting my save games and such off it this time around. i think im just going to get a new slim one instead of fixing up the old 60gb again. siiiiiigh.

edit: well i got the old girl working again and got my saves and whatnot off it. now im redownloading... really a lot of stuff onto my new one. why does syncing trophies the first time take so damn long? its been like 15 minutes and its around 25% done. anyway... this is a good week for psn stuff! cubixx hd looks real cool, plus all the RE stuff, and burnout crash too. im kinda glad the square games got pushed back, since i would feel bad spending that much in the store all in one whack.

Unfortunate about the PSOne Games but Squeenix being shoddy about that shouldn't surprise anyone. At least RE fans get quite a bit to be happy about, Plus Subscribers or not.

With a Plus account, can I still buy content that is offered for free, so I don't lose it if the service lapses?

I....I'm not quite sure, actually. Since I think every entry of the games have the Plus symbol and the Plus price. Hrm...I'd suggest looking around in the actual categories for them rather than the Plus section, but I don't know if that'll help.

why not just download them for free, and then whenever your plus membership lapses you can buy them then (assuming you still care enough about whatever that game is to want to spend money on it at that point).

I've never played any Resident Evil game other than 5 and a little of the first one. It's a good week for me!

So what's the consensus on RE4 HD? I can't read through GAF's bellyaching, so as someone who has played this on GC, PS2, and Wii, is this the definitive version of RE4, or is it a sloppy upscale that isn't worth looking into?

I'm real tempted at $10 (PSN + here), but I want to make sure.

edit: well i got the old girl working again and got my saves and whatnot off it. now im redownloading... really a lot of stuff onto my new one. why does syncing trophies the first time take so damn long? its been like 15 minutes and its around 25% done. anyway... this is a good week for psn stuff! cubixx hd looks real cool, plus all the RE stuff, and burnout crash too. im kinda glad the square games got pushed back, since i would feel bad spending that much in the store all in one whack.

Oh god, I know right? When I had my three-peat of YLODs a couple years back, it took a while each of the three times I got my system back. Doing it a month or so ago when it YLOD'd again? It took so long it's not funny, I left it syncing while I went off and used my PC. I don't know what they're doing during that but no wonder it takes an age to compare trophies or look at peoples profiles.

Lazy port. 30fps, no anti-aliasing and they couldn't even be bothered giving it a platinum (when the 360 version has 1000 points and Sony are really lenient when it comes to letting PSN titles have them). The trophy list is 9 bronzes, 2 silvers and 1 gold. Laughable.

Though (sadly) I'm still considering getting it, mostly because I don't want to drag my GC out just to play RE4. Really sucks that Capcom couldn't be bothered treating one of their classics with respect and it doesn't bode well for the inevitable DMC Collection.

I know I will forget to renew and lose access to the free stuff, then be forced to pay full price. I would rather pay the discounted price to keep it indefinitely. Unfortunately, you cannot do that.

If I didn't have the Wii version, I would pick up RE4. But after playing it with Wii controls, I can't go back.

I guess Sony/Konami missed their Summer release for Castelvania HoD. My guess is Oct, probably around Halloween. Really want that for the 4 (actually just my son and I) player local.

Edit - Is FFVI supposed to be different than the GBA release? Upgraded graphics or any of the extras on it?

Is the version of RE4 that was just released the HD re-release that I've been hearing about, or is this solely a PS2/Gamecube port?

If it isn't the HD re-release, when is that due out?

So how does RE4 HD not have Move support? You think Sony would insist on that being a control option.

    Does it have trophy support?

  • DiarmuidDiarmuid Amazing Meatball Registered User regular
    I should probably clarify this.

This is the RE4 HD re-release as far as Capcom is concerned, but like the Prince of Persia, Splinter Cell etc. HD re-releases it's just an up-scaled port of the original game.

It does have trophies, but no platinum apparently.

Sony clarified on Twitter that they weren't releasing Chrono Trigger/FFVI this week, but they are in the PSOne classics section of the update, so it would be those versions. Here's what to expect:

Original SNES translations and in-game content
    Bestiary
    A couple FMV cutscenes
    Horribly awful loading times

Fuck's sake, I guess threads made before the new forum got grandfathered into a larger character size? I had to prune the ever-loving shit out of the update this week just to get it in the OP and it's not like there was actually a lot of stuff. I changed the layout too some, and I'm considering shuffling things about and/or stealing that fourth post I made for the Drop. We'll see. But this is a little fucking ridiculous.

And in slightly less rage-y news, Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy: Origins have been ESRB rated. Expect them to be announced in a couple months, retracted, and then put up at random weeks later.

man, im pretty disappointed with the demo of burnout crash i gotta say. i was hoping it would turn out fun, even though the videos and stuff i had seen prelaunch didnt really wow me. anyway... its not great. make a real new burnout game criterion!

Always wanted to play Chrono Cross, hopefully it finds it's way to Europe this time.

I ended up getting RE4 after all, I figured the €7.50 Plus price was too good to pass up.
It seems fine, but getting reacquainted with that control system is going to take a while.

Yeah I gave in and bought RE4 as well. Didn't take long at all to get used to the controls. I don't remember it looking as washed out as this the last time I played it though.
