Sweet, any chance we can get regular updates to see how it's all put together? I'm gonna be doing some remodeling to my Megaman costume from Prime and would love to see how you guys went about it.

Absolutely, I'll update as I hit milestones. I'm currently assembling the base, so there's not too much to look at yet.

I love everyone that cosplays for these events, and no offense to anyone, but I hope to see these the most! lol Wish I had more craftsman skill cause I would so do something... Maybe I'll go as Cole from Infamous... I got the sweet bag from the hero edition, and already have tattoos and a shaved head, so it would be pretty easy...

It's always worth giving it a go! Almost everyone working on these costumes started as a beginner, and you have absolutely nothing to lose! There are tons of forums and people out there willing to share good advice as well.

I have sources/ideas for a lot of the costume pieces.

That actually sounds really awesome. You'll need to send me info on making the costumes, though; I have absolutely no experience with making things like that.

I'll be going as BLU Scout from TF2, with my sister as Engineer and my bff as Scout's Mom.
I'll also be going as Malik Al-Sayf from the first Assassin's Creed, with the previously mentioned bff as Altaïr.

    Those costumes sound great!
Some of you may remember me from last year as Umbreon and Misty, but I have much bigger plans for this year.

I'll be going as Lara Croft from the 2012 Tomb Raider game and as Sam Byrne from Gears of War.

I'm still in the beginning stages of building my armor for Sam, but I've finished my Lara costume.

Here's a pic of the finished product:

    Tango wrote:
Hi, I'm @Tango, one of the Enforcers' security specialists at PAXes Prime and East, as well as PAX Dev. I'm posting this thread to help raise awareness of some refinements to PAX security policy that will be 'live' effective Prime 2011.

Be aware that the content of this post has been given the nod by PA, and so can be considered official. As such, only the most basic and definite information is presented here.

    First off, the main change:

NEW PAX ATTENDEE COSTUME WEAPON POLICY
While PAX is mainly intended to facilitate gaming, we recognize that many Attendees will want to dress in awesome costumes. These awesome costumes often come with prop 'weapons,' and the question: "can I bring this to PAX?" Needless to say, real weapons are NOT permitted, but what about props?

Well, there are some informal rules that we've been using to decide this for the last few PAXes. As of now, they have become official, and are as follows:

A COSTUME WEAPON IS NOT PERMITTED AT PAX IF:
    - It fires or can fire any sort of projectile.
    (Yes, even Nerf.)
    - It looks like a real firearm at "second glance." (Yes, even if it's a kid's toy.)
    - It's sharp or pointy enough to cut or pierce someone with moderate pressure. (Yes, even if it's not made of metal.)
    - It's weighty enough to bludgeon someone with a moderate-force swing. (Yes, even if you're a TF2 Scout.)

If you bring something in that's not allowed you will be politely required to leave, stow the offending item in your vehicle/hotel room/etc, and then return. If you have any doubt as to whether your prop weapon falls under these restrictions - it probably does. Err on the side of caution!

    OTHER CLARIFICATIONS

THERE'S A MEDICAL EMERGENCY OR FIRE! WHAT SHOULD I DO?
You should definitely alert an Enforcer or a member of venue staff. Particularly in the big con centers, they can often get the venue's own emergency responders on the way for the fastest possible response.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I SEE A THEFT / FIGHT / FAKE PASS / (INSERT INCIDENT HERE)?
You probably won't, as PAX is pretty laid-back. But the answer is always "alert an Enforcer or member of venue staff." Do NOT take matters into your own hands!

WHO DOES SECURITY AT PAX, ANYWAY?
Enforcers, venue/event staff, and a few police officers. Enforcers are generally the first contact point for Attendees, and things get escalated from there if necessary. Enforcers and event staff both have security specialists who are in charge of ensuring those groups implement their security policies. The police are there for emergencies, and to prevent any lines that spill out onto public streets from causing problems.

WHAT CAN I, AS AN ATTENDEE, DO TO HELP KEEP PAX SAFE AND SECURE?
    1. Obey the above costume weapons policy.
    2. Obey Wheaton's Law.
    3. Be excellent to each other!
    4. Let an Enforcer know if you have any issues.

Thanks for reading, and have an awesome PAX!

Incidentally, there needs to be a TF2 cosplay meetup, even if it's just for long enough to get a few pictures of everyone.

While I'm by no means a veteran (this is my third PAX East and therefore my third cosplay), I can make a few suggestions.

    * Simple is better, especially if you're just starting out. A really busy, complicated costume looks nice but can be very hard to make. You don't want to get in over your head.

    * It's warm in the convention center. Don't overheat yourself. Last year, I went as Liquid Ocelot (MGS4), and it got pretty uncomfortable walking around in a trenchcoat over a dress coat over a shirt. If you can cut out any layers, do it. (For example, the Medic wears a collared shirt, but I'm going to make a fake collar, attach it to the lab coat, and wear a short-sleeved tee-shirt under the thing.)

    * Have fun. Pick a character that you like and go for it. I can't speak for everyone, but I love looking at the costumes. Some people get really into character (there was a Dan Hibiki last year giving out cheesy autographs, and there was also an alarmingly good Mr. T), and some people don't. Some people come in full armor, and some do simpler costumes. Some people dress as instantly recognizable characters, and some people go as characters nobody's ever heard of. Whatever you do, make sure that you like it, and have a blast.

    Pascual wrote:

Well, it's totally dependent on what you want to cosplay and your budget, but I'll try to give you some general At-Con pointers (without discouraging any sort of cosplay) instead of pointers for actual construction (which you'd be better off at a cosplay forum for):

    1. Consider the venue. PAX East is in Boston, and while yes, it may be quite cold outside, inside the con, you have the teeming geek masses. Odds are, you're going to be quite warm. If you're considering wearing a cosplay with warm/multiple cloth layers or armor, take this into consideration. Carry water if so. It's easy for a hot cosplay to dehydrate you.

    2. Consider the weight. Some costumes can weigh a respectable amount, and combined with all the walking at PAX, there's a good chance it could tire you out. If you're going to wear a heavy costume, be sure you can handle that weight for a sustained period.

    3. Consider your footwear. Once again, lots of walking at PAX, and many cosplays have specialty footwear. For some people, it might be worth forsaking accurate footgear for comfort. If you're going to wear something like boots, consider wearing two layers of thin socks to help prevent blisters. Blisters will ruin a con with amazing speed.

    4. Consider your peers. While everyone loves an awesome prop, no one loves being smacked by one. If you're going to carry a large prop (for example, Cloud's buster sword), do NOT swing it around. Rest assured, we think it's as awesome on your back as in your hands. PAX is a crowded place, and do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

    5. Consider the space. While there is cosplay at PAX, there isn't nearly as much as you find at something like Otakon. If you have a kickin' costume, you're more than likely to get stopped for pictures, often to an absurd degree. If you're getting photoraped, get out of the main trails. People lining up for pictures takes up the already precious space in the halls.

    6. Consider the policies. Be sure to read the costume policies of the con and obey them. They're in place for a good reason.

    7. Consider Wheaton's Law.

So I'm debating as either going as Dr. Wily or Megaman in their Protomen incarnations...

Wily would be easier (I need just a nice suit and tie and hat and facepaint and swagger, the former of which can be obtained cheaply from thrift stores and costume supply stores, the latter of which I have naturally), but Megaman would be more iconic and easily identifiable. I am poor as dirt however, so I'm hoping to find some way to do that Megaman costume as cheaply as possible.
Basic design is a mishmash of what a lot of other people have done -- some kind of blue vest (double breasted if I can find it, single if I can't), lighter blue dress shirt, dark blue slacks, boots, some assortment of belts and things with pockets (because fuck yeah pockets!) and a black trenchcoat over it all, with the iconic helmet and gun. Biggest hangups are... well, helmet and gun (the rest is thrift shoppable)
Other suggestions are also welcome (I've seen the costume done with a leather jacket instead, or just "dress like Panther")

The arm cannon can be done fairly inexpensively if you want to go with the PVC route, just be warned that PVC is fairly heavy so you need to be ready to lug that around a con. For the helmet, motorcycle helmets are pretty standard but you might be able to get a plastic something or other that fits the bill. Wily is pretty identifiable, btw, if you do the Protomen Incarnation of him. The suit and W on the face will make you right recognizable :)

Okay so I have decided on TWO amazing costumes, with one of them being for the Brigade.

    A) I have decided to do, for my main cosplay, one of the Angry Birds, possibly the Yellow Bird (easiest to make the shape), though if anyone wants to help me figure out how to make the Red Bird look round without a ton of structure or air pumps, that would be much appreciated. ALSO, if any other people want to join up and help me complete the bird group (Red, Yellow, Blue, White, and Black) please let me know.

    B) For the Cookie Brigade, I am planning on making Portal Gel cookies and "combustible" lemon drops, and to hand them out, I will dress as Cave Johnson. Simple costume, simple concept, amazing result (hopefully).

My son (7) really wants to dress up when he goes for Sunday. He's having a hard time choosing between Ash from Pokemon, Pikachu or a Castle Crasher. I'm sure by the time we really have to get his costume put together he'll have changed his mind a dozen times. Of course he is now trying to convince me that I need to dress up too...

Some how I have a feeling if he's Ash I'll end up as some form of Pokemon - given my size I'm thinking Snorlax. Anything clever for suggestions is more than welcomed. We can't make anything now because frankly the way he grows I'm afraid by then it wouldn't fit.
