Press Release:
Big Shoes Filled -- Skylanders Giants™ Revealed at the 2012 American International Toy Fair

New Game to Build on the Landmark Success of its Predecessor, Skylanders Spyro's Adventure™
Next Chapter in the Franchise Introduces More Than 20 New Figures Including Super-Sized Giants and Characters Featuring Light Technology
Global Marketing Partnership With Toys"R"Us Grows Alongside The Game

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Bring Your Toys To LifeTM. This novel premise takes a monster step forward with the worldwide unveiling of Skylanders Giants, the follow-up to the most successful kids' IP launch of the year.(1) Activision Publishing, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI), will debut the sequel at the North American International Toy Fair in booths 3151 and 3251 at the Javits Center in New York City from February 12-15.

Skylanders Spyro's Adventure uniquely combined collectible real-world toys with an epic virtual game world, creating a new platform for communal play that was embraced by parents and kids everywhere. Skylanders Spyro's Adventure was the #1 best-selling kids' franchise worldwide in 2011, as well as the #1 overall new IP launched in North America, according to The NPD Group, Charttrack and GfK.

(1) According to The NPD Group, Charttrack and Gfk

According to The NPD Group, Skylanders Spyro's Adventure went on to become a Top-10 seller in North America and generated the greatest overall single-year sales, inclusive of software and accessories, of any new children's IP in North America, since NPD has been tracking the category.

Skylanders Giants builds upon the breakthrough fundamentals of the first game—merging the physical and virtual realms with an innovative line of cross-platform toy figures that have "brains," which players everywhere can magically bring to life in the world of Skylands. This next installment of the franchise features a variety of new characters, new challenges, a thrilling new story-driven adventure, and advanced integration across console, handheld, mobile and online:

•Going Big: Skylanders Giants introduces eight new highly collectible figures that are more than twice the size of the main skylanders cast in both physical and virtual form. Their in-game powers and abilities reflect their colossal scale.

•Bright Lights: Helping to further the real world magic of bringing toys to life, Skylanders Giants includes a set of characters that feature spectacular new light technology integrated into the toys, allowing the figure to light up when near or on the Portal of Power™. These characters have additional in-game benefits as well. Batteries are not required.

•Brand New Skylanders: Eight new regular sized skylanders, each with their own unique powers, abilities, and personality, join the adventure alongside the Giants.

•Forward Compatibility: Every beloved character from Skylanders Spyro's Adventure is 100% compatible with Skylanders Giants, leveled-up stats and customizations intact.

•Wider Worlds: Portal Masters will see all new arenas and more gameplay options in Battle Mode for exciting head-to-head play, as well as enhanced Elemental Zones, new Hero Challenges, and other features that encourage players to collect and level up every character.

Skylanders Giants also features closer integration with Skylanders Spyro's UniverseTM, the large online world that allows Portal Masters around the world to greatly expand their Skylanders experience.

"Skylanders Spyro's Adventure's success in 2011 validated an exciting idea—that with the right technology, and the creative minds to support it with engaging characters and story, we could define a new model for children's play," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. "Skylanders Giants marks the evolution of this core concept. We've got super-sized figures, remarkably cool new characters that light up, as if by magic, and more ways to play and explore Skylands than ever before. We're delighted to announce the title at Toy Fair 2012 and can't wait for fans to go hands-on this fall."

Toys"R"Us has reaffirmed its commitment to Activision and the Skylanders franchise, and will remain a marquee retail partner for the launch of Skylanders Giants. "While it was still in development, we recognized the potential that Skylanders had to connect with our customers due to its unique merging of physical and digital play," said Jerry Storch, Chairman and CEO, Toys"R"Us, Inc. "The game was an enormous success last holiday shopping season, and the toys seem to evaporate as soon as they arrive on our store shelves. We're excited to continue our enthusiastic support for Skylanders with a comprehensive, global marketing program to introduce Giants to our customers."

Model Details:
8 Giant Skylanders: One out-sized Skylander for each of the different elements. These characters have special abilities in-game, but balanced in such a way that they shouldn’t eclipse the original Skylanders. Each of the Giant Skylanders has elements that light up when placed on the Portal and is about twice the size of the original figures.
4 Light Skylanders: Four special edition figures that have light up parts when placed on the Portal. Like the Giant Skylanders, this extends the RFID technology to wirelessly power the figures and avoids the need for batteries.
8 New Skylanders: Eight new normal sized Skylander figures, one for each of the elements. These extend the elemental families with new figures that complement those already available.
24 Re-released Skylanders: Although exact details were less forthcoming on this issue, it seems the plan is to release a fresh set of Skylanders figures in different poses and holding different items to the originals.

Skylanders is kinda like Gauntlet with stats progression. We all sort of had a eureka moment today trying to finger what came this reminds us of. Aoi hit the nail on the head.
Aoi wrote:
And I finally figured out what game this reminds me of. People were saying Diablo, but that didn't quite sync up with me. It's (and I mean this in a good way) Gauntlet Legends/Dark Legacy. Right down to some of the voiceover stuff in the challenge levels. It's a Gauntlet Legends dungeon crawler with RPG elements through and through.

This versions are more action oriented. Have you in the role of a "Portal Master" defeating enemies and collecting crystals to open up doors and move onto the next area. A few areas of platforming are thrown into the mix, along mini-games to change the pacing a little; and cutscenes to help move the storyline. This versions also offer drop-in/out co-op multiplayer into the main story/campaign, and a (2-players) battle mode that lets players pit against each other figures/characters.
(Check the 'reviews' for more information)

sqKmN.png
This version of Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure is more of an action platformer (similar to the original Spyro games) than its console counterparts. Players have to complete levels by gathering crystals, which lets them unlock more levels. Each level is littered with crystals, obtained by going towards the end of the level, or by doing a variety of tasks, such as defeating a certain amount of enemies, or finding items. Whenever the player finds a crystal, an enemy awakens and a time limit starts. They have to defeat enemies, and use rockets to ward off the chasing enemy. Unlike other versions, characters can make a jump, and a double jump. This version of the game is set in a different realm in Skylands called the Radiant Isles, and a different force of darkness is faced under the command of the Hektore.

  • There's no multiplayer on the 3DS version.
  • On the console version while playing you can use one figure at a time; but you can swap that figure whenever you want to.
  • The 3DS version allows you to use 2 figures at the same time, and alternate/tag between characters depending on the skills you need or just your preference.
  • The "portal-accessories" (what you use to send the figurines to the game) are slightly different across platforms; so you can't plug one in one platform, unplug it and use it in another platform.
    • On the PC and 360 versions are wired (included USB cable).
    • PS3 and Wii portals are wireless through an included USB accessory (includes batteries for the portal).
    • The 3DS portal is wireless, trough the built-in IR-sensor of the 3DS (includes batteries for the portal).

Nintendo World Report: 9 [out of 10] (3DS Version)
"Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure is a great game for kids - the 3D platformer equivalent of top-of-the-line training wheels. It's still a fun romp for experienced gamers, but the investment in buying all these characters might not appeal to most gamers over a certain age. However, you can't knock the quality of the game, as Vicarious Visions not only made an awesome 3D platformer, they made a great 3DS-exclusive title."

Nintendo World Report: 9 [out of 10] (Wii Version)
"Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure is an extremely well-designed game that is perfect for kids. Unfortunately for parents, this game is wonderful and addictive, meaning that most kids who get their hands on this will crave more characters to collect them all. More experienced and older gamers might not get the same unadulterated joy, but it’s still worthwhile, especially if you have younger kids or relatives. Skylanders kind of nails that Nintendo-esque feeling of a game that can be enjoyed by all ages. In that respect, it’s unfortunate that the figure-collecting might turn off an audience, but then again, it’s a defining feature that makes this one of the freshest and most ambitious gaming concepts in recent memory."

Gaming Nexus: B+ (Consoles/PC versions)
"Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure looks to not only be a pioneer in merging physical toys with a video game, but also take the Spyro franchise to a younger audience. After a two-day marathon across four platforms, I think that Activision, Toys for Bob and XPEC have succeeded. While the game has a few flaws and I have some concerns with lost or broken toys and portals, I believe the game (with the help of an aggressive marketing campaign) will make this one of the hottest game/toy combinations this Holiday Season."

PlayStation Illustrated: 97% [out of 100] (Consoles/PC versions -PS3-)
"If you can't tell, I love Skylanders: Spyro's Adventures. There are a very few things that I would change, like the ability to jump and removing the max of level 10 on the Skylanders, but I'm just going to hope that those are planned for future releases. I love the fact that you can get more areas to play just by buying new packs like the Darklight Crypt Adventure Pack. I can't wait on my pre-orders to come in for more areas, but there's still so much left to find on the current ones that I have lots of gameplay time left. I highly recommend that you all go get Skylanders: Spyro's Adventures."

Game Boyz: 8.75 [out of 10] (Consoles/PC versions -Xbox 360-)
"Overall, Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure is one of the more innovative gaming experiences I have played on the Xbox 360 to date. Its cross-platforming abilities, slick looking toy figures, and enjoyable gameplay all make for a game which should not only please long time Spyro fans, but will surely satisfy the games younger target audience. You will spend a bit more to own Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure, but when you consider you get the illuminating Portal, three toy figures, and a game that offers a good amount of variety and depth, this is a game that has some good bang for the buck and should be under many Christmas trees this Winter."

the font reminds me a lot of Hasbro's Galactic Heroes line. The idea of taking what are essentially Wizkids-like minis and using them in-game is intriguing, but the toys themselves don't appear to have a lot of play value. And any time you do something like this you either need to pre-program everything the game will support, or you have an internet connection/download disks.

Still, being someone who never got into Spyro, I can see this being popular. Kinectimals does something like this too, yes? Actually, I think this would make a great idea for the move/Kinect, something that could recognize the forms.

What I'm wondering is if this whole portal system also allows you to download your character back into the figure. Because otherwise, this is all expertly worded bullshit for what amounts to DLC encased in a plastic shell.

It does look pretty cool and interesting at first glance. But then that ol' cynicism kicks in, coupled with the fact that this is Activision at the helm, and well... yeah.

From what some interview I watched said the character's progress is stored in the toy. You can then just bring the toy to your friend for coop and retain everything you've unlocked.

Well, after showing this to my fiance, we're going to be making our way over to Best Buy to pick it up, so, in a couple hours I'll be able to give you guys some hands-on impressions.

I honestly hope they take this a bit further--a way to actually play a game with the figures outside the console would be fantastic. Some sort of boardgame that incorporates their stats would be really cool.

I picked it up for the 360, and got about... well, I've got an addictive personality, so we have 16 of the 32 figures. When you log your character onto your Portal when you're logged in, you claim 'ownership' and it attaches to that story. You get perks the more figures you have, but it's not necessary for 100%. The most important thing for immediate play is if you have at least 1 of the 8 different types--that way you can open up every elemental portal, regardless of where you go.

At first I thought this was going to just be another shovelware game with Spyro attached, but the more I see and hear about it, the more I'd like to play it.

Bummer I have no cash and no one to co-op with.

Co-op is fun, as your friends can use your figures b/c they retain whatever gold & items they pick up. The biggest downside I've seen to it is the only player who gets Achievements/Trophies is the primary player. I played co-op with my daughter for a few hours, and she got all the achievements while I played second banana.

The game plays almost like a hack 'n slash--every character has a primary and a secondary attack. You earn gold by smashing barrels & such, and enemies drop it occassionally on death. You can use this to upgrade your attacks when you finish the 2nd area; they are kinda pricey, starting at 500-600g ending with 4000g for your 'ultimate'. You find hats in each level, usually 2-3, and they add stats to your character--crit %, attack dmg, armor, higher elemental dmg, etc, and you can switch them on the fly. Every character has a 'soul gem', typically 1 per stage, and it enhances the character's specials in different ways. Each soul gem is preset per stage, and you can unlock them for any character, whether you have them or not, and it gives a video 'preview' of the character and his specials... almost as an in-game advertisement :D There are also Heroic Challenges you unlock when you add new characters to your Portals, and the are single-player only, and moderately challenging. You earn lots of extra gold and experience doing these.

I have only progressed to the 4th stage, but so far it's pretty fun--the second player can drop in and out as they please, so it's pretty kid-friendly on the attention span, and seems like the game has a decent length to it also. I spent maybe 2 hours getting the first elemental thingamabob to finish the game, and there are 8, so I'm sure there's lots more fun to be had!

Toys r us' buy 2 get 3rd free promotion works on this. Buying the game, 1 adventure pack, and 2 individual characters got me and 3rd and 4th character free. Then since it's over $100 for all that, I'll get an email with a coupon to pick up yet another free character, but not til January.

I played it for a few hours at my friends house and it is more fun than I anticipated. Somewhat unfortunately, when I set mine up at home I had to start the story over, but in the game menu you can change ownership of the figure so at least I still have my level, hats, and skill upgrades.

So is this more of an action game or a platformer?

Is the wii version the same as the other consoles?

I'd say more action than platformer, there's no jumping, although you get flight and other skills as you level up. Some areas you can only traverse with that type of creature--like a river you come to early can only be crossed by a water-type, etc. It's not completely mindless, there are some puzzles that take a decent amount of thought to get your Treasures & hats. And the Wii version is the same as the 360 & PS3 versions, the PC version is unique to itself, as is the 3DS version.

Speaking of... if anyone picks up the 3DS version and is willing to give up their Dark Spyro figure, send me a PM with what you want :D

So the the Wii/360/PS3, PC, and 3DS all have different set of figures? A person can't play with the 3DS ones on a friends Wii? 3 different sets of what, 32 figures, seems ridiculous.

Guess not. I guess it pays to read the reviews. :/

So, ended up dropping like $200 on Skylanders stuff. My fiance decided we needed to get the 3DS version of the game because the Dark Spyro was exclusive. And then to Toys R Us for the Legendary pack on top of that. Both Adventure Packs, and some singles.

Its a pretty fun game though--lots of addicting grindy bits, with the nice mechanics that make it quicker to level up extra characters later, which is nice.

I'm curious how later expansions will work.

Also, does anyone know the differences of the PC version? Grabbed the PS3 version and 3DS versions here. The 3DS version was kind of disappointing, actually--stuff you do in it isn't remembered by your figures, but they'll be leveled up if you bring in an existing figure.

Its also more of a platformer, but has a terrible camera that you can't flip around. So if you ever need to go backwards, you find yourself forced to run towards the camera.

Also, has anyone tried out the web part, where you input the codes?

This definitely is a neat idea, and it's something I hope is explored more in the future

But goddamn I hate every single one of those character designs

I am hoping that this is successful largely due to someone else picking it up with something a little more in-depth.

However, Trigger Happy is awesome and I totally want a stuffed one.

We picked up: Spyro, Trigger Happy, Voodood, Bash, Prism Break, Flame Slinger, Eruptor, Zap, Gill Grunt, Boomer, Drobot, Chop Chop, Stealth Elf, Stump Smash, Sonic Boom, and Whirlwind. The only 2 we hadn't picked up were the big packs with Terrafin and Ghost Roaster ($20 packs with 1 figure and accessories)... those can wait a bit I figure. I'm curious to see if Ignitor is available--its lit up on the Skylanders website, but I haven't seen it online for sale or in any stores just yet.

The sync speed is really awesome, the second you pick up a figure it asks for another one, and starts syncing the new one before it even sets on top of the portal. Makes swapping out relatively painless, other than having to get up off my ass every time I see a new Elemental Portal. I've got my Drobot up to lv 6, and all the upgrades minus the 4k one... just started a few Challenges, and those things are crazy if you don't have the right type!

Get at least 1 type from each elemental set, so you can unlock every area in the game.

Wait. So you literally can't unlock the entire game without one figure from each elemental set?

You can beat the game no problem, but to 100% every area, some zones have Elemental locations you can't reach. You can still 100% the game's achievements with the 3 starter characters, so you're just missing out on completionist stuff without these areas.

Yeah, I was just gonna ask this. They don't even give you a generic default one from each element, you have to actually go out and buy them?

Bleh. That sounds rather icky. At least tell me you can beat the game somewhat without needing outside product.

So, the PC version is entirely different?

Anyone know what it's like or how it is, yet?

Its just like the Lego games. You need certain characters to reach certain areas. So, in this case, to reach certain chests, you'll need figures with the appropriate elemental affinity.

Also, I have Ignitor. I think he might have been in the 3DS pack? Guessing he'll be available elsewhere later, as he isn't listed as exclusive on the box like Dark Spyro.

Yea, you can beat the game and 100% the achievement list with the starter 3. The only 'multiple character' achievements are 'complete 3 Heroic missions', once for each character, and some achievement with Gill, which every starter pack comes with him I believe.

But the game is fully completable, there are just some areas you'll hafta keep moving past b/c you don't have an archetype to unlock it.

... dammit, he DOES come with the 3DS version! Seems silly to drop $70 on a 3DS version JUST for the figures... maybe I can pull a Walmart special and claim it was missing some... blargh I hate exclusivities.

The only exclusive one is Dark Spyro, which is clear on the box. Ignitor is just a normal figure, so you'll probably see a single or triple pack involving him down the line.

Also, just to let you know, Dark Spyro and the 3 Legendaries are just color-swaps. No different abilities or anything.

That too. The hardest archetype to fill out right now is Undead--out of the 4, 2 are unavailable, 1 is only in a $20 pack with accessories, and the other is in a $20 3-pack AND a single unit (Chop Chop). If you get all 3 of the 3-packs (excluding Toys-R-Us exclusive), you only need to pick up maybe 4 loose figures.

I want to stick with the original 32 figures--all the Legendary and Unique ones seem unnecessary unless they add to your tally. Getting Legendary Bash, Legendary Chop Chop, Legendary Spyro, and Dark Spyro seem to be exactly the same as their counterparts.

They show where you need a different character to access it, yes. You also get Soul Gems for characters you don't have, and you can watch a clip of said character's special abilities if you choose to watch it. All depends on how you wanna see it... if you wanna be a Negative Nancy about it, then I guess it'll be seen poorly.

If I were in secondary/high school with a larger group of people also interested in the game, the entire concept would seem a million times cooler.

But as an adult and very likely the only person in my smaller group of friends who would play this game, and as a result have to buy the figures myself... not so much. More so when, after my interest in the game wanes, I'll be stuck with a bunch of dust collectors. And I have enough of those. I had a friend get me into Heroclix a few years back. They're now sitting in a shopping bag in the corner of my closet.

Interesting concept. But it's one collect/buy 'em all where I'd rather keep my nickels and dimes in my piggy bank.

I'm just waiting for some sort of online battling/co-op system. The complete lack of online multiplayer seems like a major "Wha?"

I'm guessing they're holding it off until they can work out a cross-platform way to do it.
