The really humiliating part is that there are actually two levels of pity gifts. Keep dying even longer and you'll be given a P-Wing block.

    kind of

newer nintendo games have a thing where if you die a lot in a row, you unlock the ability to have the game play itself and beat the level for you

the idea is that they can make more difficult games while still letting less good players to make it all the way to the end, and they can watch the game play itself to learn how to do harder areas.

Super Mario 3D Land is not the first time Nintendo bestowed Mario with the now-controversial raccoon costume. The Tanooki suit first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3, released on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1990. In the game, touching a power-up in the shape of a leaf would suddenly give Mario a raccoon ears and a tail, and allow him to fly for a short period of time; however, the raccoon suit did not cover his entire body.

Except for the part where the full Tanooki Suit actually did appear in SMB3 (released over 20 years ago... great, now I feel old). :P

I'm saddened that Nintendo's response didn't mention this, but only because they bothered to respond at all. Maybe the next release should bring back the Frog Suit.

I'm planning on suing Nintendo for the misrepresentation of the noble profession of plumbing.

Maybe PETA will hook me up with some of their lawyers.

Or I could claim gender discrimination at the fact that he's always having to rescue a helpless woman and have Gloria Allred hold a press conference.

What other Nintendo games play themselves for you? I've never heard of this before. Does Donkey Kong Country Returns do this? Because that game can be merciless at times.

Man, everyone knows Shigeru Miyamoto personally strangles a fresh raccoon everyday for Nintendo's designers to model from.

Yep DKR does it. Super Mario Galaxy 2 had it. Most Nintendo games have it if you start dying A LOT on the level.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii has it as well, I think that was the game that started the idea

I'm pretty sure Skyward Sword has it too

And there will always be stages in which you die a lot in them.

DKCR actually had a lot of very difficult stages, particularly the Kong Temple stages. Never did use the cheater to get my way through (I wanted all the puzzle pieces dammit) but sometimes getting your timing down can be a pain.

  • EnlongEnlong Registered User regular
I never saw the Super Guide in DKCR.

...but that was because I was playing co-op with my brother, like in the good ol' days with the first two DKC games. Bottom line is that the Super Guid doesn't show up in Co-Op mode, no mater how many dozens of balloons you pop trying to make one jump.

I'm glad Nintendo does this kind of thing. It's completely optional, is it not? There's was a seriously unfortunate trend of Nintendo making their games too easy for the casual gaming crowd, and this seems like a good way to appeal to both audiences.

I saw the one in New Super Mario Bros. Wii a couple times, and it always just made me try even harder. Not once did I cave and use it, but its mockery fueled my persistence.

I agree that the system is a great compromise. God knows the last few Mario games have been hard as shit, there were definitely a few times in Galaxy 2 that I was tempted to use it.

I forgot this was coming out and I really want a 3DS now.

The best part about the compromise (at least in DK) was that if you wanted to use the guide to complete the stage, you can, and go on to the next. But you don't get the completionist aspects (KONG letters and puzzle pieces.) So it's a great happy medium. Haven't played any of the other Nintendo games that use the guide, but hopefully it's similar

Yeah, it is. The super guide won't find star coins/comet medals in NSMBWii/SMG2 for you. It makes perfect sense since the point of the guides is to let you see the "ending" of the game, not necessarily all the secret content. Of course you could always come back later to try to get them yourself.

NSMBWii had a ridiculous thing where even just having the Super Guide block appear (I think it took 8 deaths in a level without reaching a new checkpoint) permanently tarnished your game. If you 100%'d the game without ever having the block appear, your save file's stars had a shine effect. If you ever died enough for the block to appear, even though you didn't hit it, no shiny stars. If you're OCD enough to care about that, it meant you had to reset and play all the levels since your last save if it ever popped up.

The 'Splosion Man games had the Path of Shame as well, where if you died a ton on a level it let you skip it. Can't remember what the penalties were for doing so, though.

I like how the Peta game New Super Chick Sisters which has you placed in the role as Chicken Mario or Chicken Luigi to save Princess Pamela Anderson so she can open her restaurant Double Delicious has an item where you wear the skin of an animal to give you powers.

Really love that third panel Goomba.

It made the character wear a tutu on the next level, and I think the skipped level didn't count toward completion achievements until you went back and actually beat it.

Mario Land 3DS does the same thing and the pity item shows up after 5 deaths, so it'll be more frustrating for those people who want their shiny stars.

Thankfully the game saves after every level. So you don't lose any progress.

Holy shit, really? What took this so long to make it into the 2D Mario series?

Also, it's too bad it's a 3DS game since I'll probably never actually play it.
