The Lenski thing is the best. Scientist taking the time to rationally and confidently explain to an annoying jerk-face how science works. And he was funny about it too. Everyone should have to read the Lenski letters in 6th grade. It really hits home to me because in college I actually participated in the analysis stages of a very similar long term evolution experiment (about to be published YEARS later, whoo), so Schlafly sounds particularly dumb to me because I've seen the things he's saying don't exist with my own eyes.
Speaking of seeing things with my own eyes: just while goofing off a little while back I got some plain ol' shitty binoculars and looked up at Jupiter-- not really expecting to see anything.
I saw the Gallilean moons!! Holy fuck! I didn't think it was possible without a telescope; but just with a cheap pair of binoculars I could clearly see what I assume to be Calista, Ganymede, Io and Europa in a perfect line around the planet. Blew my fucking mind.
Ever since I've been wanting to get my hands on a telescope to see more shit. More recently, I also saw the Great Orion Nebula with my binoculars and the Andromeda Galaxy. Again, with cheap shit any any fool can buy at Walmart.

The trick with feelings like rage and depression is not to let your mind focus on them, and instead do something else to occupy your attention. That's why being depressed at two in the morning is the worst, there's nothing to do except think about it.

Yeah that's why the Gallilean moons are the Gallilean moons. Given the right conditions you can see them with the naked eye.
This post also reminded me a post I made a while back
I love nerding out on astronomy because it's one of the few nerd things that normal people actually enjoy learning about.
I taught a couple of years at the UNT observatory and planetarium, and I loved seeing the wonder in the eyes of these dumb sorority sisters and frat boys as they would peer through 14" telescopes at Jupiter, Andromeda or our moon. (Hell, even letting them look through the scopes at the lightbulbs of nearby radio towers got some of them smiling). It brought back an almost childlike interest in science to people who had already decided that science is too hard or just for nerds.
Very few people were completely disinterested during those labs. I never understood those people.
I always see this super bright star in the sky that I've been assuming is Venus, but I don't really know. I'm pretty sure its a planet though.
If you are looking at a bright object high in the night sky more than an hour or so away from sunset/sunrise, then it's probably Jupiter.
definitely sounds like its Jupiter that I'm seeing.
e - Its been pretty consistent. Like for over a year I've been seeing it, so probably not a comet or anything transient like that.
