Do you remember this shit? Well it has gotten a few improvements that some would call vital to it being considered a "game".
For those not in the know, AoS is a team-based shooter that revolves around playing C.T.F on a completely destructible map, where strategy revolves around building defenses block by block.
! Some servers have modded game types, such as Team Death Match; which is playing a map until a team reaches 1000 kills, while captures would be worth 100 kills.
! While other servers have modded in "/" commands, the most commonly seen are:
*Medkits: Recover 40HP by typing /medkit, limit of 1 per life.
*Airstrike: After getting 6 kills without dying, type /airstrike to bombard a sector with carpet bombs. (doesn't carry through death)
VoteKicking: Now you can votekick (followed with a 15 minute ban) griefers or aimbotters to improve your playing experience.
To begin a votekick type in "/votekick <name> <reason>"
? for example: "/votekick Lameass For being a dick" would start the vote
{You have started a vote to kick "Lameass", Reason: Being a dick. (X needed to pass)}
Minimap: There is a MINIMAP now, so you don't have to constantly press M to know where the fuck you are going.
Maps: There isn't the same "Blue gets River, Green gets Hills" generated maps, the map generation code has gotten much better, and there is a cornucopia of good maps that can be played on. (Island,Normandie,Ice Cap,Firestorm)
Lack of Motion Blur: Looking at the floor or turning the camera faster than not moving won't make you throw up anymore, so all you who actually vomited the first time you tried AoS can play without fear of motion sickness.
Squads: You can now form Squads with fellow players, making playing with friends a more cohesive experience. Squads make you spawn on top of each other, allowing you to venture further into enemy territory without facing complete annihilation unless your squad is wiped out.
To start/join a squad just type in "/squad X" where X= the number of your squad.
! Be warned when spawning on a squad mate, you can spawn into a wall and get stuck, crouch jump rapidly or ask your squaddie to dig you out of the block. If all else fails nade yourself, and reappear right next to your mates.
Capture Point Mode: There is a new CP mode called "Tug of war", where you capture points and hold them to run out the clock and win, same ole CP but on AoS. It really focuses the action from being possibly map wide, to heavy skirmishing between points.
In Tug of war, Resupply points go from being bases to points that need to be captured before they allow resupplies. Allowing the action to shift back and forth across the map, and having the action occur at a much quicker pace as there is no real reason to ambush enemies outside of the area between the 2 contested points.
New Weapons:
The Rifle: Long range Extraordinaire, has great accuracy which is ideal for getting headshots at most ranges. Hindered by a slow re-fire rate.
^ Has near pinpoint accuracy when used with iron sights, point and shoot.
The SubMachineGun: Mid range Specialist, has alright accuracy which can manage quick-shots at mid to close ranges, allowing for greater killing power within ideal ranges as more shots can be put on target. Hindered by it's high recoil and lack of complete accuracy on shots.
^ Shoots in a cone, which means all shots fired have the chance to be inaccurate, regardless of shooting single shots.
The Shotgun: Close range Regulator, unmatched at close range, as a close range burst will kill anyone outright. Hindered by it's shots being clustered in inaccurate groupings, as that can cause ranged shooting to have shots veer wildly off course and never reach your target even for minimal damage.
^ Shots fired spread in a grouped pattern, but the patterns also fire in a cone, making ranged shooting difficult as entire groups of shot can veer off target making it almost impossible for even a few shots to make their mark.
! Iron sights are near useless for the shotgun, they may make you feel better when shooting someone out of range, but otherwise don't bother.
Strategies: Just to get things moving here are a few things to consider when playing AoS, food for thought.
* Block Physics demands that any block is connected to a block that is connected to the ground, if an enemy has constructed a mighty wall to impede advances, try removing all of the blocks that make up the base of the structure, as soon as the last block is gone the structure will crumble. This is also can be used to hilarious effect as you can cause giant mountain top bases to crash to the ground leaving your opponent's without significant cover, or advantageous firing positions. Beware as doing this, usually causes the other team to get pissed off and do the exact same thing to you, so build to last.
* Headshots are infinitely effective over taking someone's health down to 0 with multiple body shots, take the time to aim and get someone in one shot rather firing successive shots that become less accurate as recoil jostles your aim. (Reduce recoil by crouching)
* The Spade is an instant melee kill, when someone isn't pay attention save a bullet and give em a whack.
+ The Spade also has 2 modes of fire; Dig (Removes one block in 3 hits, adds 1 block to your block supply), and Shovel (Removes the blocks above and below target block, ideal for creating trenches but does not give you blocks to be used later)
* Hold down left mouse on grenades to throw them farther, clicking also "pulls the pin" sort of speak, so you can cook grenades but be careful not to get cooked
+ Grenades have a large blast radius, ducking behind blocks is your best bet to surviving a grenade landing at your feet.
! Grenades used to not effect targets that were below where they landed, this is no longer an issue so a grenade anywhere near you is bad.
* Each gun has their environment, there are maps with buildings and terrain that mix up the distances firefights occur. Don't go charging into a map filled with hills and valleys and no concrete cover with a shotgun.
+ With squads though, it is really useful to not all carry the same armaments, as you'll have better chances of success by having a variety of weapons that can each provide their expertise to a given situation.
