Can I change mine after I finish? Or should I wait until the last minute to get my backlog sorted out?

Unfortunately soooomebody forgot to nominate the Yugioh game and Chantelise so I just had to tack a couple things on to my list : (

    1. Rune Factory Tides of Destiny : I think the characters and music and dialogue are really enjoyable. The dialogue especially really highlights why I've sort of fallen out of love with the main Harvest Moon line recently. The economic scaling is kind of bad even by Natsume, which is the biggest problem I have with the way the set up farming, and it's kind of sad to see the huge regression in dungeon design following Rune Factory Frontier, but overall I still love it.

    2. Tactics Ogre Let Us Cling Together : A pretty fun game itself but I give it a lot of points just for being such an amazing example of a remake done mostly right. I didn't even like the original game, but everything in both gameplay and presentation is modernized and streamlined and enjoyable. It really makes me sad Final Fantasy Tactics couldn't get the same treatment : ( The cumbersome class experience and crafting systems are the only thing keeping it from #1.

    3. King of Fighters XIII : I am pretty much sick of Capcom. I've always liked KoF gameplay and character designs, and it is so pretty and Ash Crimson is the best. I am glad to have a fighting game again.

    4. Catherine : I've actually only played a bit of this, but I love Atlus and just from my knowledge of the directions it goes, I'm pretty sure it would be a bit higher if I finished.

    5. Dungeon Defenders : I usually hate tower defense games, and I've really not liked random loot games that aren't roguelikes for a while now, but this is pretty entertaining in its fusion of the two, I guess. I would like the game so much more if all the characters weren't ugly.

    6. Skyrim : Just not a huge fan of open ended RPGs really, and the bleakness of everything, but it held my interest for a little while. Would probably rank higher if the character customization and perks were more interesting, which is the one thing I usually enjoy most in western rpgs.

    7. Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky : I have a really hard time playing RPGs this simplistic unless the characters and setting are super endearing, and neither has really done it for me yet. Joshua is awful, and it's hard for me to care much about the expansiveness of the world and its lore or whatever the series is supposed to have when it all seems so generic. The music's really good though, and the rest of the characters are at least somewhat enjoyable, so I'll probably make some effort to play at least a little more and hope it grows on me.

    8. Harvest Moon: A Tale of Two Towns : A fairly middling Harvest Moon game. The quest system is kind of super boring : (

    9. Radiant Historia : It's oookay I guess. I will play some more eventually but it was just not super fulfilling really. The implementation of the multiple divergent historia radiants or whatever bothered me for a few reasons.

    10. Pokemon game : A pokemon game I played I used Piplup I think unless Piplup is from an older pokemon game.

Probably overall the weakest year I've had in forever. I guess a few things might jump up, but Catherine's the only one I see as particularly likely. Maaaaybe Skyrim with some mods on it. Top 3/4 is still pretty strong but my feelings for them are definitely less than the likes of Radiant Dawn or the Personas or Rune Factory Frontier which have been at the top of my lists before.

    16. Aliens: Infestation (DS)
    17. Anomaly: Warzone Earth (PC, iOS)
    18. L.A. Noire (360, PC, PS3)

I'm pretty happy with this list. According to Steam I've sunk over 100 hours into Dungeon Defenders and Magicka with friends over Skype and had a ball with both of them but the replayability of Dungeon Defenders wins out.

I haven't played Batman this year yet and only picked up Portal during the Christmas sale, but I'm pretty happy with this list. Sequence was another late suprise that I meant to pick up but totally missed it's release. Enjoyed the hell out of it though.

Yes, I like AC:R that much. Of course, as usual, I didn't play nearly as many of last year's games as some of you did. Had I spent time with them, I'm sure Skyrim, DE:HR, Portal 2, Dead Island, and Uncharted 3 would be right up there for me. I had to leave a few off the list, like The Binding of Isaac. I get what that game is going for, but the controls were just a bit floatier than I wanted, and it is pretty repulsive (and I'm not easily offended).

Also, thanks @mcc for running this. Can't wait to see the results, as I love playing around with the numbers to determine different ways to rank them.

Wow. I've played four games on this list, partially because my 360 was out of commission 5 months out of the year. Of those four games, I own two.

I guess, by default, Orcs Must Die is the Game of the Year followed by Gears of War 3.

OMD deserves it, though. It's been a long time since I've had a one player game that is as much a single player game as a spectator's sport. Everyone chimes in on where to place traps, there's screaming, yelling and cursing as orcs make it through traps or if you find flying monsters you overlooked because you were concentrated on the three ogres that just spawned and wiped out most of your defenses.

It's a lot of fun! Now that I have a new 360, I'll have to check some of these other games out.

I really wish I could've put Rune Factory first, since I absolutely love that game and want more people to play it, but I've put waaaaay too much time into Marvel and continually play it several times a week. I get the feeling that if I were to do this exact poll in a couple months, KOF will have found it's way to the #3 spot at least, but everything else was pretty straightforward for me.

Kind of a mediocre year. I do love all the games in my top 10, but it's weird to not even come close to hitting 20 games. Usually the ones I didn't quite finish don't even make my list.

    3. Portal 2 (360, PC, PS3)

    6. Terraria (PC*)
    7. SpaceChem (iOS, PC*)
    8. L.A. Noire (360, PC, PS3)

My top 2 could probably be interchanged I guess. Both are continuations of vastly successful franchises (well in the case of Batman, just one previous game) that added just the right amount of polish and new stuff. Haven't gone too deep into Portal 2 yet, but I just felt it was just a little short of the standards set by the first two.

Also, just wanted to point out that it's been a poor yearfor RTSes really. I can't remember any standout RTS of late except Starcraft 2, and that was released nearly 2 years ago.

I have a few games that came out last year that I haven't had a chance to play yet, and many others that I'm interested in but haven't bought, so this list is probably shorter than it would otherwise be:

I flip-flopped on 4 and 5 for a while-- relatively speaking, I don't like Skyward Sword very much, and I do like Skyrim, but I admire a ton of things about Skyward Sword on a more technical level, so why not. Skyward Sword honestly has some of the best sound design in gaming, while Skyrim's is awful.

    Here's mine...
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Wii)
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (PSP)
    Dead Space 2 (360, PC, PS3)
    Super Mario 3D Land (3DS)
Dragon Age II (360, PC, PS3)
    Marvel v Capcom 3 / Ultimate Marvel v Capcom 3 (360, PS3)
    Dissidia '12 Final Fantasy (PSP)

I kinda want to feel bad, but when I look back on the games I played this year most of them were either retro games or titles that came out before 2011 (Ghostbusters, Bioshock, Uncharted 2, etc.). Not that 2011 was a bad year mind you! I've got a lot of stuff I'm playing right now (like Deus Ex) that I didn't get around to play during 2011.

I played Uncharted 2 for the first time this year as well. Its so awesome, it should be on everyone's GOTY list somewhere for the rest of time :D

True, I got my PS3 this summer and played all 3 Uncharted games this year and Among Thieves was the most memorable one.

There's a lot that I played, but didn't finish. Some of those I enjoyed enough to include them in my list. Batman and Zelda, are kind of interchangeable so it was a tough choice.

Skyrim will be that game that I slowly whittle away at for a while, popping it in for a session every now and then to just explore and wander around. I had almost forgotten that I played Yakuza 4 this year as well. I played it back-to-back with 3 so the experience is kind of blurred, but I know that I spent a ridiculous amount of time in Kamurocho and enjoyed a lot of it.

Dark Souls and Portal 2 could be another interchangeable couple as well. Both are so tightly designed and focused around what they want to be and what they want to do, and I really admire them for it.

I just got Saints Row the Third and The Witcher 2 over the holiday break, and right now it looks like if I'd played them last year, they might have very well bumped any of the last three off the list. Uncharted 3 is one of my biggest disappointments this year, I enjoyed it a lot still, but in comparison to 2 (which was #2 for me in '09, I think) it fell short for me. All in all, it was another stellar year I think. Looking forward to the year ahead.

Holy crap I played nearly nothing this year. I had only six games in my "you voted for" list because they were the only ones I played to any serious extent. Most of the games I even marked as played I only played for achievements during the Steam Sale.

I guess that kind of comes with the territory when you've just spent most of a year playing Magic: the Gathering.

    18. Jamestown (PC*)
    19. Fishing Resort (Wii)
    20. Rayman: Origins (360, PS3, Wii)

I have played the following, but either not enough to vote on or it just got bumped out:

    Duke Nukem Forever
    Conduit 2
    Gods Eater Burst
    Sonic Generations
    Dungeon Siege 3
    Deus Ex: Human Revolution
    Star Wars: The Old Republic
    Aliens: Infestation
    Solatorobo: Red the Hunter
    Monster Tale

I still want to play these:

    Dark Souls
    Bulletstorm
    Binding of Isaac
    El Shaddai
    Hard Reset
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
    Yakuza 4

And I played this but feel I should mention that I did not like it very much, despite liking the last three or so in the series:

    Modern Warfare 3

Thanks again, mcc! This is kind of a tradition for me now.

Now that I think about it, if we were allowed HD re-releases, some might have made my list. I don't know if that's damning to any of the games this year, or just a testament to how well some classics hold up.

Sheesh, I can't believe how few "current" games I played last year. I was still catching up from the previous years' backlog.

I finally got around to Dark Siders, Mass Effect 2 and Half Life 2 last year.

Damn, I also played Dungeons of Dredmore, Sword & Sworcery, and Space Marine. But they didn't make the list.

I played something like 35 new games this year. Fucking hell.

I didn't play a lot of 2011 releases as evident by only ranking the 5 games that I played from the list:

    1. Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure (360,Wii,PS3,3DS,PC)
Was a tossup between Skylanders and Skyrim but as me and my kids are still currently obsessed with Skylanders I put in my top spot.

    2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (360, PC, PS3)
So much game there that I haven't even scratched the surface. Will probably revisit time and time again this for many years to come.

    3. Sonic Generations (PC, 360, PS3, 3DS)
A really good Sonic game? Holy Crap!

    4. Frayed Knights: The Skull of S'makh-Daon (PC*)
Funny old school RPG. Following the developer's log http://rampantgames.com/blog/ is what got me back into following games and RPG's in a big way this last year.

    5. de Blob 2 (DS, PS3, 360, Wii)

Best games of 2011 for me:

    1. Bastion (360*, PC*)
Amazing soundtrack, gameplay, graphics, story...I loved it. I need to go back and finish my New Game + because this was just a fabulous game.

    2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (360, PC, PS3)
83+ hours in and no end in sight. I've stopped playing because there's so much else to play, but during the first few weeks, I couldn't NOT play Skyrim. I'll eventually finish.

    3. The Binding of Isaac (PC*)
Holy crap what a difficult game! I love, love this Action/Roguelike/Zelda game. It's morbidly fascinating and terribly unforgiving.

    4. Dungeons of Dredmor (PC*)
Speaking of unforgiving, this roguelike puts the perma in permadeath. You invest hours of your time and then, BAM, a Monster Zoo takes you out. Only to have you instantly restart a new character because it's just that addicting.

    5. Sequence (PC*, 360*)
Honestly, I need to play more Sequence. But this game is so innovative, witty, and original that I had to give it a nod here.

Ug, I wish I had checked in earlier. Two of my most-played games in 2011 aren't even on the list:
    - Order & Chaos (iOS and Android)
    - Fleck Touch (iOS)

I love these polls and how they remind me of all the games I played this year. From Dust was tons of fun and amazing. My #1 has to be skyrim though.
