Ravnica Resurgence: Magic the Gathering

Yes, I am making ANOTHER Magic thread. Because MtG is awesome.

Bucketman, I have no idea what Magic is. Enlighten me.
I will do just that. Magic is a strategy card based game where you take the role of a Planeswalker, a powerful wizard/sorcerer who travels through dimensions and battles other Planeswalkers using the resources of the planes to power spells and summons creatures to do your bidding.

Ok, that sounds rad. But I don't know how to play!
Thats fine, just head to http://www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Default.aspx and click on "New to Magic" to learn the basics. Also if you have Steam, an Xbox 360 or a PS3, then you can get the demo of one of the two Duels of the Planeswalkers games (which are good and I would suggest buying just to play) and they have a tutorial built into the game. Long story short you control different colors of 'mana' and use it to cast spells. Usually the color of the card (or colors) has different kinds of effect. Not always, theres going to be cards that don't follow the norm, but usually:

Black: Destroys creatures, causes your for to discard cards, puts negative counts on creatures.
White: Small cheap creatures, enchantments, life gain
Green: Big expensive creatures, regenerating creatures, and elves. Those god damn elves.
Blue: Counters, board control, mind control, and makes me hate you
Red: Direct damage spells, fire, and lots of it.

Sweet. I'm all ready, but my friends all think I'm weird and won't play with me.
Well thats fine. Any local comic shop or game store will be running Friday Night Magic, a time where Magic players can flock together, play in tournys, trade cards, or just play casual like.
Also, theres the previously mentioned Duels of the Planeswalkers game, which lets you use the premade decks they have to fight against the AI or others online.
Or, if you hate money, theres Magic Online. Its basically Magic the trading card game, but you buy virtual cards and play people.
There are tons of ways to play, one v. one constructed deck, draft, two headed ogre, five headed dragon, Elder High Dragon, Arch Enemy. Look some up, they are interesting and a great way to use some of the old legacy cards you can find for ten cents a box (warning some legacy cards cost upwards of $100 each)

Someone told me this game has this long established lore and is hard to get into. I don't know if I want to tangle with that.
You know some awful people. Just a heads up. There is lore of a sorts, and books based around the current group of Planeswalkers. The lore is all optional, and while I love it, you don't have to follow it at all to enjoy the game.
Oh and that brings up the Planeswalkers. Basically you can ally yourself with these powerful allies, whome also traverse the planes for various reasons. They range from ancient time traveling golems, to dragons, to magic cyborgs, to vampires and everything in between.

So thats all you need to know. What are you waiting for? The new set: Dark Ascension comes out in a couple of weeks. So get shufflein.

Some of the art interests me.

I'm running White/Green Humans right now, and am excited by some of the new white cards in the set. May do a Black/White but I really the Red/Green Werewolves.

The main problem is, everyone at tournaments is playing Red Burn and Blue/White control, so my creature decks are a novelty

  • MeldingMelding Registered User regular
i love that there is a card that says "destroy all humans"

  • BucketmanBucketman Call me SkraggRegistered User regular
yeah thats why I'm thinking of letting my Human deck slide. I think this set is going to shit on them, maybe black/white is Humans/Demons so you sac humans to power the demons?
Makes sense story wise, the Angels have left them so they turn to demons to protect them. Then in the last set, BAM, angles come back.

I do not have nearly enough disposable income to play MtG

Maybe if it was, like, all I ever did

I play the planes walker games, but eventually give up on them during my battle to unlock every card, like beating every enemy w/ each deck

Fuck slivers. Fuck Myr. fuck any infinite combos. Its why I avoid legacy format. It could be fun buts all "I now Grapeshot for infinite damage" bullshit

  • SolarSolar Registered User regular
Legacy is the best. "I won the coin flip for first turn, so I win. Good game."

  • nightmarennynightmarenny Registered User regular
I currently play a Green/Red/White Naya deck. It is pretty fun. I don't really understand the whole tournament rules. Like you can only use the new base deck and everything after that?

    White Weenie for life.

(The effects of the card "Path to Exile" would be more fitting with the name "Swords to Plowshares".)

i don't play magic at all ever because 1) MONEY and 2) the people you end up playing it with

i follow the release of each new set avidly though.

how much fun is it to play with? it's hard to tell just by looking at the cards

    Depends

Sometimes it's just "I used my combo before you so I win"

Sometimes games can be pretty tense and exciting right till the end. I think really the difference is between competitive and casual play, just like with most card games, wargames and so on. When you don't play to win at all costs, but instead to have fun, then you can definitely enjoy a game of magic.

One way to do it is every time a new set is released, you and your buddies club together and buy all of the pre-constructed decks. Then you play with those decks, swapping them around between you. They tend to be pretty balanced towards each other and so you can enjoy the game more, in my opinion, that way. After a few sets you will have a decent amount of decks, and you can play with more variation.

I still have my magic cards somewhere. I stopped playing a little after 7th edn came out.

I think my coolest card is Rhystic Tutor (I think that's what it was called?) - unless a player pays 2, search your deck for any card and put it into your hand.

Also I have a cool dragon card.

edit: also millstone, bitches hate millstone

I have come across a few people who had combos that won the game if they went first. It doesn't seem super common. Most of the people who seem really serious seem to dismantle those deck after awhile because they also want to have fun.

I only played this a couple times, but; fuck blue. Always and forever. Blue is some serious bullshit.

I had some cool black cards though. Like, we were doing the round whatever thing, I get this giant black golem dude, it caused mutterings.

He got stuck in some infinite loop blue magic.

    Oh brilliant

i have a friend with a multiplayer deck labelled OWLS, and another deck with some legacy card that produces tokens of your choice of type, so he printed off like two dozen little pictures of his cat which he plays as 1/1 tokens

dude is pretty serious about magic, though, he's working on building some deck his favorite player used in the big worldwide competition or something

i don't really play much magic myself anymore but my best friend is super goddamn crazy into it

Mirrodin did terrible, terrible things to the power level in the game. It pretty much pooped on Kamigawa, which was a pretty reasonable set (So it couldn't hold a candle towards the ouchy bits of Mirrodin)

Let me just play a disciple of the vault

  • BugBoyBugBoy boy.EXE has stopped functioning. only bugs remainRegistered User regular
    kamigawa was cool too

I think those were the only sets I really was around for

although I got a box of the first set of the mirrodin/phyrexia thing

that was a lot of fun to open

I loved Kamigawa to bits, and came back to the game after pretty much skipping over Mirrodin. Me and my fellow Kamigawa loyalists were pooped on by affinity decks, our fatties too costly and our spells too slow to keep up with thousands of super cheap death robots
