I would question that they realistically lose anything close to a third.
Also, I'm curious how it's different in people's minds than losing 3 squads "just because someone paid points" for some tanks

I mean, isn't it on a roll of 1 or 2 and everywhere is difficult and dangerous? So I move my termagants up and they take 1/3rd of their unit in casualties? I think you play Tyranids, don't you? It seems obvious to me.

It is different from tanks, because at least tanks take some tactics to use, have to roll to hit, etc.

It's only a 1 or 2 if the unit already treated difficult terrain as dangerous

It's only 1 or 2 if the unit already treated difficult as dangerous or if the terrain is actually a piece of dangerous terrain.

Most tanks are virtually auto-hit on a horde army on turn one, as they only have to roll to scatter

Like I say, i've played several games with and against it now, and the real upshot of it is people only move what's vital to move, or don't move, or deploy in reaction to it. It has a huge tactical effect on the game, but unless you're up against a very sort of stalin mentality general who orders his shit mindlessly forward anyway, it's not the army wiping time waster it seems to be when you look at it and mathhammer it ... I'd far rather deal with that than people's infinitely interesting ways of "randomzing" who gets hit with a mindshackle. Most people just wait it out, or take the risk en masse in transports.

For that matter, if I had the models, I'd take more annihilation barges anyday over this combo

I'd really like to play an Apoc game (we already have a Baneblade, for some reason). But I would want it to be set points and reasonably scales so you could finish. What I think would be fun is vast tables, interesting strategems, and bad ass units and super heavies. The traditional "you line up everything you have and I'll line up everything I have and we'll do two turns in eight hours" sounds like a huge waste of points.

I had a great time with the All-Guard fest a year ago and the Endless Bugs and Ork last summer. Those were, above all, a radical departure from the structure and deployment of typical games.

My local GW occasionally does the odd apocalypse mega battle, I think once a month or somesuch, last time they had two 18x4 tables linked by big bridges which seemed pretty cool. I've never been myself though because a) I don't have any apocalypse level stuff so I can't imagine getting shot at by D-weapons from half the world away is all that enjoyable and b) although there are a bunch of cool folk there apocalypse seems to draw the worst kinds of player out of the woodwork, one guy in particular seems to take great relish in arguing every possible ruling and stretching out the game time til it's been ~4 hours and you've only finished one turn...

Actually, you've nail'd the key to a fun apoc game: actually having some stuff that eats up points. A game with some baneblades and titans and stuff. Otherwise you're just playing a big, slow, boring 40k game

Yeah, don't you take the c'tan thing so that all the terrain on the board is difficult already?
Q: Does Writhing Worldscape cause every model moving
through difficult terrain, moving as if in difficult terrain
and counting as moving through difficult terrain to take
    a Dangerous Terrain test? (p41)
A: Yes. For example a unit hit by a tremor stave would
have to take Dangerous Terrain tests if they moved in
the following turn, as would any unit moving in the first
turn of the game if their opponent had Orikan the
    Diviner.

Perhaps I was thinking of a different combination.

I think the key if you don't have any D-Weapons or mega-templates, is to reserve and/or deep strike the crap out of stuff.

Shut up, Mr. Burton! You were not brought upon this world to get it!

IF the model already has a rule where IT treats difficult terrain as dangerous, OR if the piece of terrain is already dangerous, it's a 1 or a 2.

OTHERWISE it treats open terrain or difficult terrain as both difficult and dangerous on turn one, THEN it treats difficult terrain as also dangerous (while the c'tan is still alive) - which means its movement is hampered and it must take the normal difficult terrain test (fails on a 1)

This rule clarifies that yes, Orrikan's power and tremor staves combo with the c'tan's power.

Look at all us happy little nerds :).

Who's had luck getting the ladies interested in gaming?

I got my wife to paint a Kroot once, which I promised to make the template for the rest of the squad. She did a real good job, and had a nice color scheme, but when I did the rest of the squad I changed a few details. She saw this as censoring her creative vision. She still ribs me about that to today.

Every long-term girlfriend save for my current one has at least painted a mini or two. 2 of them have actually played with me.

By and large though most girls I've known have found the rules needlessly cumbersome and I tend to agree. Simpler rulesets like HeroQuest have gone over like gangbusters. That game is rocking a 100% play rate with significant others.

Just had my second game ever, my DE vs. my friends Eldar. I had Archon/wyches in a raider, Lelith/wyches in a raider, 4 reavers, and Trueborn (splinter cannons/shardcarbines) in a venom. He had... stuff (Farseer/Jetbike, Avatar, dire avengers in a wave serpent, rangers, guardians, dark reapers, and wraithlord I think).

Things looked bad initially. He went first and immobilized the Archon's raider (it would blow up next turn) and other than getting lucky and blowing up his tank as soon as it moved within line of sight I didn't make much progress. Lelith's group wiped out the guardians only to be shot to death the next turn (I forgot to get my pain token!). He assaulted Lelith with the avatar and wraithlord and she managed to hold her own for a couple of assault phases.

3 of the 4 reavers died early, and the venom spent turn 2 unable to do anything but got to shoot at a few things before blowing up. The trueborn also stayed around as they got picked off one by one.

By the end of turn 5 I had 1 trueborn and the Archon with 3 wyches escorting left on the table. He still had everything except his guardians, wave serpent, and dire avengers, and his farseer was contesting my objective (Capture/Control). We roll to continue into turn 6.

Turn 6 my archon/wyches manage to take out the farseer to gain control of my objective, letting me tie the game with practically nothing left.

Of course, that was with some helpful advice from him and allowing me to cheat on an assault measurement by letting me move the mat underneath his model the 1/16th of an inch I needed to assault (I wasn't expecting him to).

    A few observations:
Reaver bladevane attacks aren't bad against Eldar and it they might be downright nasty against his harlequin-heavy list if I added some more bikes.
Lelith ate up his troops, and tied up his nastier units. She performed a little better than expected.
If I am going to shoot and then assault, I should move as close as possible to prevent model removal from keeping me too far away to assault.
    I shouldn't forget pain tokens.
The ruins and walls I have from Heroscape make great terrain.

The anime thread that got us kicked out was in SE++ I think. Also if you want to be technical about it, I'm pretty sure it was actually named the Naruto thread. :P

I've had better luck with some of the bigger boardgames you can buy, like Chaos in the Old world. Then the question gets asked, "Oh...is your little army stuff related to this?" and then you've set up the dominos.

We also have a woman running a professional painting service in our circle of gamers and that seems to blow minds for some reason.

Well Ive been married 10 years now and it's quite odd in that my wife shares almost none of the interests I do. She hates sci-fi and fantasy and even though Ive painted countless marines and guard she would not be able to tell you which army I play. I can't say I mind because it makes for a nice balance because otherwise all I would ever do is paint and play video games. Also I don't think I could stand to play my wife at 40k, we would just get in huge arguments and she would give up. BUT, I wouldn't have it any other way. I like having it as my own hobby.

My ex wasn't interested in gaming at all. When I first got into 40K, she thought it was neat and even took some of the pictures on my blog, but of course, later, it was a point of contention.

She did like playing Tekken Tag Tournament and kicking my butt though. I've never been so thoroughly trounced by a button masher before.
