why are the comic related threads consistently the angriest threads on SE++

    y'all got passionate opinions
    well
these are characters that have been around upward of half a century

they existed before a lot of us have been born, and will continue to exist after we die

there really isn't any other medium with things like that

    Sherlock Holmes

    well, I meant ongoing stories

the original author is dead and any other work after his is non-canon

Sherlock was not intended to be written in a modern serial medium where multiple authors and creators worked on his stories
I like a lot of writers. Hickman is my current favorite, but Bendis, Morrison, Kirkman, Pax, and Johns are my current favorites. They all have flaws, but they also can all tell one hell of a story.
    what the shit

    No Ultimate Spider-Man for Pony?

I've actually never read Ultimate Spider-Man!

The Ultimates was the only Ultimate thing I read, and that stopped after Ultimates 2

it's not due to some strong reason as to why, I've just never tried

I have pretty harshly been called a casual or very mild comic book fan

I buy very few comics (in the past few years, none at all!) and I read very little

ultimate spidey is pretty much exactly for you then

pretty much completely self contained, outside of one or two spots near the present

no past continuity to worry about, no other book tie ins that you need to get it

the only thing is it's gotta pretty lengthy now. but as people have said, it ranges from "good" to "incredible" from issue one to now

my policy on most comics is like louis ck's policy on dick-sucking

i have no strong, compelling reason not to

i've just not often seen comics where like, i feel really excited about the idea of reading it

i got out of buying comics around the late 90's

then didn't come back to buying comics till just before House of M, and then Marvel did back-to-back "mega-events" and I was like

peace out, doggs, no thank you

Well there are still plenty of great comics that aren't mega-events

I mean at Marvel alone right now you have the Ultimate Line, Hulk, FF and Fantastic Four, Venom, Amazing Spider-Man, Daredevil and Thunderbolts.

    (it was pretty bad)

I'm aware of a lot of goings-on in comic books even though i read very little of them, not the least of which is because of interacting with places like this forum

    @Pony

Swamp Thing and Animal Man are fantastic books that DC is putting out right now

and this is where I put in my requisite plug for the current IDW Transformers ongoing books

they are legitimately good, and Blank can back me up on More Than Meets the Eye

USM and Venom are good, Thunderbolts and Daredevil are good

    that was me

Then my parents got me an Ultimate Spider-man collection for christmas one year. It was really cheap, 20 bucks for a hardcover of all the early stories.

And then I started reading comics again. Except by comics I mean comic, I only read USM. Occasionally I'll buy something else that has taskmaster in it.

It has been really cool to see him develop as a writer

he started off promising with Fear Agent but had a few mis-steps, like his All-New Atom run at DC. Then he did FrankenCastle and X-Force and now Secret Avengers and holy shit he found his groove

Yes @Antimatter I like Robert Kirkman. I read Invincible, Walking Dead, and Guardians of the Globe and love them all. Also I met him at a con a few years ago and he was super nice. Ottley as well. Both were super nice.

  • BlankZoeBlankZoe Registered User regular
I don't like Invincible much nowadays and think Kirkman's dialogue is...pretty bad.

but the first 12 or so issues were fucking incredible and his new series with Spencer, Thief of Thieves, had a really strong first issue.

    Astonishing X-Men

you realize people can have different opinions

you don't need to post a multi paragraph rant every time someone has a different view than you

it gets really, really goddamn annoying

I'm sorry, I just don't think that stating an opinion and then explaining why I have that opinion counts as a rant. It saves other people the time of having to ask me why I think something.

And yes, I know that people can have different opinions. It's baffling that people keep using that line when they're talking to me and then immediately follow that up with the whole "oh you always do this you always start a rant about having different opinions blah blah blah." I mean, you don't think I'm blind, do you? Or sleepwalking or something? Or coma-posting? Everyone's always going on as though I'm not aware of what I'm doing or like this whole issue hasn't been discussed a million times with almost the exact same outcome.

I personally think it's way more annoying that people keep bringing up the length of my posts (god forbid you'll have to actually read anything) as though that means I'm wrong somehow or that I'm being silly despite being the only one to actually clearly state and explain his opinions. I think it's way more annoying that people act incredulous when I don't agree with one of their opinions even though I explained my reasons as clearly as possible. I think it's way more annoying when people act like I've insulted them or something just because I put a little more time into a response than they did.

This was a bit of a rant, yeah, but I don't think it was entirely unwarranted. I know I can be abrasive and a bit jerky about my own opinions, but I try to restrict my abrasiveness when dealing with people who are also jerky about their own opinions, except they often don't bother to explain themselves and just continue to be kind of jerky and wilfully incredulous about other people's opinions.

There is a difference between explaining your opinions and shitting on other peoples' taste and views

saying "I do not like Bendis' writing, I personally think he is a shit writer for these reasons" is cool

saying "You like garbage" less so

plus while you may try to restrict your jerkiness to other jerks, you don't do a good job of it. I mean in the Batman thread you fucking told a guy to kill himself in a volcano because he wanted Darkseid in a Superman movie.

interesting post considering you were just getting on anti's case for having different opinions than you
That isn't what I was doing at all!

I told her it is fine if she doesn't like Bendis. I explicitly said that!
but really the problem is you don't like Bendis, that is cool.

people have different opinions! The problem is when people decide their opinion is the only valid one, which is what Anti and Spex are doing.

Actually, I don't know about Anti, but that's not what I'm doing. I'm just stating my own opinion and explaining why I have that opinion. If I come across as angry, it's only because the reasons I mention are things that really get on my nerves.

Comixology solves that, for me at least, digital comics for stuff I wanna read now, then every now and then a trade or two to have a physical copy.

    the Hughie miniseries is terrible

herogasm adds some interesting character beats and stuff but for the most part takes the already over-the-top sexuality and bizarre bullshit of the series into over-drive

    there's a scene that none-too-subtly implies
    that black noir rapes hughie

and it doesn't come up ever again and i don't know why they put it in there

The Boys is already trashy, gratuitous schlock
