    1) It depends on the procedure, the nurse, their impartiality, their experience, and their confidence. I think for really unambiguous and simple stuff that the default would be "yes"

    2) Kneeling while holding your head in your hands existed before Tim Tebow started praying for victory in football games, although I feel like as he wanes in popularity and people 'Tebow' too much, then it may get on people's nerves more.

(For people that don't know what Tebowing is, it is when you mimic the stance that Tim Tebow takes while praying during a football game:
    popb2anack1azzo.jpg)

    3) I had not heard of it before I just looked it up because of this question, and I still don't feel like I really know exactly what's going on.

Foxconn is an electronic manufacturer in China? And it has atrocious working conditions? I don't know the details.

    4) I do not understand this question, sorry.

    5) I didn't vote for Obama in the 2008 United States Presidential Election because it would have been illegal for me to do so. His politics and positions align more closely with my own than John McCain's did then or do now however, so if I could have voted, then (knowing what I know now) I would have voted for Obama.

    6) As far as I know, I've only seen one film with Ryan Gosling in it. It was about Steve Carrell temporarily splitting up with his wife and Gosling was trying to teach him how to be a ladies' man. It wasn't that good of a movie, but Ryan Gosling isn't that bad of an actor.

    7) Hiro from the television show Heroes. The character, not the actor. First season only.

    1. I think they already are? I mean I've had one diagnose me with no doctor present. Unless you mean like, establish their own practices, etc.
    2. I am only vaguely aware of what this is, so probably
    3. It's a bummer, but not really worse than any other 3rd world factory conditions. The suicide rate among Foxconn workers is actually significantly less than the Chinese average, they just employ so many people that the absolute numbers high
    4. I have an SA account from '07 I guess
    5. Probably
    6. Drive, duh
    7. Hmm. Historical or living? Historical probably Musashi, living... Ken Watanabe?

I am going to get my shit kicked in, but I think Drive kind of sucked. That's probably too harsh, because I was definitely engaged, but it oozed "trying too hard". The soundtrack, and some of the more incidental cinematography were the highlights for me. Gosling has done much, much better in other movies.

America doesn't have the manufacturing capability to produce its own electronics. Modern photolithography has been wholesale exported to Taiwan/SEA; the only companies that still run their own fabs in America are Intel and IBM, and they have plants all over the world anyway. Everyone else outsources. Basically, if you own anything with a silicon chip in it, you've contributed to a whole bunch of shitty things like conflict mineral production, exploitative 3rd world labor practices, etc.

edit: oh I forget TI, TI does some chip fab too

Prohibitively expensive on pretty much anything with a printed circuit board.

short answer, more than most could afford

longer answer, we lack the means and the actual raw materials

sobering and horrible answer, if you think what is effectively slave labor is fucking awful(which it pretty much is), consider the fact that the global economy is only where it is because of it
governments and private charities would be worse off in helping the less fortunate both domestically and abroad
in other words, everything is fucked forever

  • AbracadanielAbracadaniel Registered User regular
I would definitely agree that Gosling's acting in Drive wasn't great and that the soundtrack was one of the better aspects.

yep! So, short of America becoming a planned economy, it would be impossible; market pressures are too great to be overcome. In the case of America becoming a planned economy, it would be literally tens of billions of capex to get the manufacturing infrastructure in place, plus orders of magnitude higher opex. Although maybe not the opex part because if America became a planned economy wages would probably fall.

    1) We have 2 different main classifications of nurse here in Canada, one of which requires a lot more education and certification (4 year degree vs. 2 year community college diploma.) I'm not sure how those relate to american nursing classifications, but I'd be okay with the former doing routine work without doctor supervision, not so much the latter.

    2) I was only barely aware that it was a thing beyond making fun of the football player for doing it. But then football isn't a sport I pay much attention to and it may not have caught on as much north of the border. Tebowing, that is.

    3) Kinda really hideous, but last I heard it wasn't much if at all better at other chinese manufacturing companies. The whole thing needs some kind of worker's revolution/organized labour. Also people paint Foxcon as an embarrasment for Apple, but they make shit for lots of companies.

4)This is an internet subculture thing that I don't get, right? my gut says goblins are cooler than goons but who knows?

    5) Would have if I was American, yeah. Still wouldn't have voted for Harper, if anyone's curious.

    6) Drive was great, and is the only thing that really comes to mind.

    7) Goichi Suda, as he seems to have the freedom to design whatever crazy game he wants to make.

I absolutely love this movie to bits. Def one of my fave movies, period. Loved that they didn't go for cheap laughs or meanness, it was just sweet all around, considering the plot.
