Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!

Droid 4 maybe? I think there are some in the Galaxy family with a physical keyboard too.

But really, touchscreen keyboards are fine. I felt the same way (part of the reason I started with a Droid) but after upgrading to a Gnex with no physical keyboard I basically haven't missed it at all.

Ever since I got my Droid X I've been wanting a physical keyboard. I mean, Swype is fine for texting most of the time but I really hate when it occasionally gets it wrong and I'd rather be able to just use a physical one and be a lot more accurate. Plus I really like tactile feedback.

If you're on Verizon, there's the Droid 4 and Samsung Stratosphere. On AT&T there's the Samsung Captivate, and on Sprint there's the Samsung Epic. Of those, the best is probably the Droid 4.

So, my iphone's sim tray or something is broken? Good shit, Apple.

    the heck?

take that shit in to the store yo

So apparently Apple is building a new data center near where I live. Along with the Facebook data center that opened last year, seems like maybe I should shoot for a computer science degree.

  • TossrockTossrock too weird to live too rare to dieRegistered User regular
If you get a degree in CS, you can live wherever you want

a datacenter being built by your current residence should not be the deciding factor

anyway datacenters are run by IT guys, not CS

well that shows you how little I know about stuff!

I like this region, and would like to continue living here, is the thing. a good job in one of those data centers would be cool I think.

  • Centipede DamascusCentipede Damascus The machine is broken. The universe is broken.Registered User regular
where can I find out exactly what kind of knowledge I need to get a job in a data center

  • TossrockTossrock too weird to live too rare to dieRegistered User regular
Most jobs literally inside a datacenter are actually pretty shit. Here's one: http://www.google.com/intl/en/jobs/uslocations/lenoir/engops/datacenter/data-center-facilities-manager-lenoir/index.html

That's one of the extremely limited number of jobs that would actually be through Google at a Google datacenter. Datacenters can be run largely remotely. The majority of onsite stuff is grunt work.

man Tossrock here I was feeling like there might be a good path to the future here

  • TossrockTossrock too weird to live too rare to dieRegistered User regular
well, getting a CS degree is still an excellent path to the future

you just wouldn't be working inside a datacenter

I have a CS degree and I work with computers that are housed inside datacenters all day every day, but I never actually go to the datacenters themselves. If you live in anything resembling a major city, there will be CS jobs around. It's one of the few sectors that's growing faster than skilled workers are being trained, so there's ample opportunity.

well Bend does have a pop. of almost 80,000 people

    that's not too shabby

  • TossrockTossrock too weird to live too rare to dieRegistered User regular
That is too shabby to house a major CS related industry, though

Data centers are located in remote parts of Oregon solely for the cheap electricity. The local people employed by the data centers are mostly going to be janitors and electricians.

Just wanted to pop in here and say that I found out last night that my favorite music tracker, SunVox, released an Android version last month! They've had an iOS app out for awhile but I hadn't paid much attention to it since I don't own one, but this got me excited. Check it out, it's a really awesome music creation program and the guy is always updating it.

If that's a bit too confusing but you're still interested in making music, you could also check out another of the guy's trackers he made called PixiTracker, also available for iOS and Android. It's simpler but a lot easier to use.

You can download his stuff for free for Windows, Linux, OSX, Windows Mobile (Windows CE) and other operating systems but he charges a small amount for the iOS and Android versions ($4.99 for SunVox and $1.99 for PixiTracker)

as awesome as that would be, I'm not sure I buy it

2048x1536 in a tablet form factor would be quite an engineering feet

that is way better than my 15" MacBook Pro

    that is ridiculous

I know SF is still in a hiring frenzy for software engineers and CS peoples.

    Too bad I'm not one.

I know too many people making too much money in the IT field.

I should try to.. do that somehow.

I have 3/4ths of a BA, and I failed the one programming course I took

Don't think that is gonna help much

    i also should do that

Having a CS degree is boners

I got my current job one year after graduating with a BS in CS (so four years ago now) and from everything I've seen I can make my entire damned career out of working here 8-)

On more on topic news, I'm considering buying an iPad2 why am I doing this when I don't need one, I have a laptop, someone stop me

I would like an internet machine that isn't as big as a house (my laptop), and tablets fit that bill nicely

Problem is even with Swype I kinda dislike touch typing and touch screen accuracy in general

Admittedly I've never tried it on anything but a phone, maybe I'd have a better time of it on a bigger tablet screen

So what's the best android phone with a physical keyboard anyway? I'm not too fond of touch screen only phones.

    Droid 4.

Seriously I was apprehensive as shit about it but the Gnex's keyboard rules

I use Swiftkey X mostly, though, because of its predictive typing is pretty accurate

It's picked up on my nickname for Buttlady even

    Which is so rad

Swiftkey X has me pretty down. I love when I don't even have to really type shit down.

It just knows what I want to say.

    It's my phone lover.

    Razr Maxx vs. Gnex?

I know, I know...I keep comparing phones against it, but I'm tight on cash I like to survey the landscape.

Battery life on the Maxx is rather impressive.

Yeah, I think that's probably the only complaint that I have for it. It's a really nice keyboard though, so I can't get mad at it.

So I updated my firmware and was playing around with some settings on my Transformer Prime. I figured I'd run the AnTuTu benchmark (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.antutu.ABenchMark&hl=en) that I had used before to determine I have a tiny awful phone (that I love).
    Spoiler:
Seems this tab o' mine isn't too shabby after all! Who would have thunk'd it?

i sold my iPad 2 to my father in iPad 3 anticipation

    let me rephrase that

I sold my iPad 2 in new iPad anticipation

I do not consider this speculative

  • RoloRolo Registered User regular
well at some point there will be a new ipad, yes

just as eventually life will evolve, societies will form, and there will be lemon-soaked paper napkins again

it just seems a bit premature
