Prometheus - Probably an Alien prequel, unless it isn't (it totally is)

Come, let us discuss my favorite, which is probably The Fifth Element

It owes a lot to Blade Runner!

  • Vann DirasVann Diras Registered User regular
Fifth element is a movie I saw as a kid and just thought it was a weird movie

Still need to go back to it, just hasn't come up yet

Children of Men is probably my favorite movie. Cuaron is a goddamn directing wizard.

Pearce is laying it on a little thick but maybe that's supposed to just be how his character is

He's doing a John Hurt voice.

Not to imply there's any further the connection to Alien or anything. It's just he's doing the gravely John Hurt voice.

I can't think of any better way to qualify an absolute best movie. The idea of their being a best movie is probably just fundamentally broken otherwise. If one were to get into any attempt at academic objectivity though, the only way Casablanca is getting on the list is historical relevance. The movie is entertaining, but it's otherwise pulpy and simplistic. It's a couple of missed coin flips away from being To Have and Have Not.

There is no good way of qualifying what the best movie is, but that should be a reason to avoid the term rather than use it incorrectly. Just like I get annoyed by people saying that a song is terrible when what they mean is that they don't like it.

Everyone knows the absolute best movie is the Godfather

    That's quantifiable

They did movie science to find that out

Quite difficult to ascertain the quality of a song other that whether you like it or not, though.

I'm quite happy to say that there is no objective measure for any entertainment.

Snatch is a really good movie.

I think Blade Runner is merely good.

This is actually true. In fact, every experience is just as good as every other experience.

Blade runner is a movie I need to see again.

The first time I did not dig it at all, I may have not been in the right mood for it though.

I remember watching Blade Runner for the first time back about 12 years ago and it didn't catch me at all. It was booooooring to my 15 year old brain.

I watched it again last year and it was like I was watching it for the very first time. I absolutely loved it.

    Ah, maturity.

Man, I remember I watched Big Lebowski when it was first released in theaters and I just didn't find it that funny. Then about 15 years later I watched it again and it dawned on me that I was a stupid fuck the first time I watched it and it's a brilliant comedy.

I think "this movie is the best" and "this song is terrible" are both easily understood in casual conversation. Replying to either by attempting to define accomplishment by way of technical merit is probably the greater misstep.

I'm wondering if it's the same way with some other stuff I watched, mostly Burn After Reading.

The problem is that to test that hypothesis, I would have to watch Burn After Reading again, and I remember that movie sucking ass.

Part of the problem may be that I went to go see it with some friends when I was in high school, and none of us found it particularly hilarious.

Which made me feel some marginal level of guilt, as I was the one who suggested it.

    Oops.

I've seen Blade Runner only once.

It was on VHS with a friend who also hadn't seen it.

I thought it was a cool universe with awesome visuals but I need to watch it again so I can figure out what was happening in the main plot. Maybe I'll get my hands on the director's cut one day.
