I honestly doubt you'll care that those units are not the optimal choice when you're playing friendly games with your wife.

Who said anything about friendly games - I am sure she will be out for blood!

It is good to know I made the right decision with the set I just have the painful wait for it to be delivered now. What about the paints, does anyone have any experience with the "Army Painter" range?

Also, what is the general feeling on "No Quarter". I know White Dwarf is basically one big advert these days so does No Quarter fall into the same bag or is it worth the money?

It's usually decent, but if you're not heavy into the fluff it's not essential. Though NQ40 featured quite a few alternate Tier lists that are perfectly Tournament legal, so I do highly recommend picking that one up (it's the current issue). I recommend waiting for a new No Quarter to drop, listen to the community chat about it, flip through it for any articles that sound interesting, and then make the call on whether it's worth $7 to you.

I can't help you with paints; I've got a GW store right near where I work, so I usually pop along and get my paints from them, mainly because they've always been extremely helpful whenever I've got questions.

No Quarter is fairly thin; as in, it won't take long at all to read it from cover to cover.

You get articles talking about the latest developments of Privateer Press; things that are in the pipeline; sometimes you get rules of new releases; new theme lists (basically if you pick a caster, they normally have one theme list. You don't have to follow this list when building an army, but if you do, you have restrictions on what you can pick, but you get little rewards as a result. Sometimes these lists are good, sometimes they're not worth the effort).

You get fluff articles describing a character or a unit, or a monster or a Jack, etc., articles on conversions or building terrain, maybe how to paint something, you normally have a few pages about someone talking about collecting an army, and then how he expanded it from say 25 to 100 points.

Oh and there's usually a battle report.

Worth the money? Well alot of the stuff with regards to developments is on the main PP site anyway, models you buy come with a card that has their rules on (you may know this, but I'm just trying to give a complete answer) and I'll note that there's an Ap coming out called the War Room sometime in March that depending on what deal you buy (as in, buy it for one faction, or more than one faction), will give you all the cards / theme forces for a faction, in addition to any future releases. The Ap does other things as well, like allow you to build lists, but you'd be better off visiting the main PP site and finding out for yourself as opposed to me listing stuff.

I suppose the only thing that is really unique about No Quarter, are the fluff articles and stories; you can again usually look up what these articles are going to be on, on the main PP site, and then decide if it would interest you.

Cinerators are very good bodyguards if you can spare an armor buff or Rhupert, otherwise they're rather lackluster. With the extra armor they can eat any ranged attack short of a boosted Defender and live to tell the tale, and if you're running Harbs or Vindictus, they can normally make an excellent counter charge.

I normally like to run a set with pFeora, having Rhupert giving them +1def or Tough depending on the situation, and then giving Pathfinder to Feora when she wants to do her charge. This way I can run Feora up the center to get good coverage on her feat before the rest of my army initiates.

Rhupert can't give pFeora, or any other solo/warcaster, Pathfinder. It's unit only, sadly.

    Yeah! Suck on my Runewood!

I can't think any times I've won with pFeora that didn't involve Rhupert giving her Pathfinder.

Welp, somebody is getting a trip to the recycle bin.

  • tzeentchlingtzeentchling Doctor of Rocks OaklandRegistered User regular
Well, if you swap him out for Saxon Orrick, who can give casters Pathfinder, it works just as well. You do lose out on the unit buffs, but you do gain a nice shooting attack.

I subscribed to both White Dwarf and No Quarter (through miniaturemarket) in December. I only have one issue of NQ so far but in my opinion it is a far superior magazine to White Dwarf.

Whether it is worth the money or not is going to be subjective based on if you like the articles, but it feels far less "Buy our stuff!" and more "This is a fun hobby!".

(I actually plan to do an in depth comparison when my year subscriptions are up)

  • SJSJ College. Forever.Registered User regular
NQ is infinitely superior to WD.

That's not saying much when we're working off an assumption that WD is a 0

    NQ is really good okay.

Both are great examples. WD is an example of how to do a wargaming magazine wrong; NQ is an example of how to do it right.

$135 for the colossal. I think that'll be out of the price range for most people.

A full unit of anything + UA is typically around a hundred dollars and is worth half as many points.

The Battle Engines are 85 bananas and cost the same points as most heavy warjacks in the 35-40 banana price range

    Food for thought

It'll be a birthday/xmas purchase for me, probably.

I want the Khador one, I do think they are priced a tad bit high though.

I'm going to give PP the benefit of the doubt and say these are priced based on material/labor and not points. Assuming anything is priced based on their in game value is a fools gambit. You'll spend your life bemoaning the cost of your models v. their point value in game.

  • VanguardVanguard But now the dream is over. And the insect is awake.Registered User, __BANNED USERS regular
Yeah, no. I typically expand in chunks and spend $100-200 at a time. Even at 25% off, $100 is too much for something like that.

I will be buying one to paint and never take outside in the light. It will be what I show to women to seduce them...since I don't have a fancy car or a large tv.

  • kaortikaorti Registered User regular
I'll probably be getting one. I've collected almost all of Cygnar, with the exception of Darius and the Trencher Deathstar. There isn't much else worth spending money on now.

I guess I should bite the bullet and get nyss or boomhowlers, but they don't seem nearly as fun.

"Not fun"? Clearly you have never used Nyss. Killing everything on your opponent's side of the table is my idea of fun.

I anticipate getting the Cryx one (probably order Mortenebra at the same time too; seems appropriate), and maybe the Mercenary one if I'm fleshing out my force by then. 30% off retailer with free shipping and no tax makes that price considerably easier to swallow.

And, more importantly, what shall its title be? "GIANTEST Robots" is perfectly fine and good, but I do feel a change is in order to keep things fresh.

Tri-Optimum reminds you that there are only one-hundred-sixty-three shopping days until Christmas. Just 1 extra work cycle twice a week will give you the spending money you need to make this holiday a very special one.

Thanks for that eHaley post by the way. I'm saving the post. Quick question though: have you considered dropping a scattergunner and the stormsmith for Gorman? I've had great results using temporal acceleration on Gorman.

I imagine that'd work. It pushes against the limits of both my "20% support" rule and my "use focus on killing shit" rule, but if you're seeing double blind bombs work, go for it.

Before we hit page 100, is there a good resource for Warmachine fluff (like 40K has Lexicanum). Took a look at BattleCollege but that seems to be more rules / units than fluff. (Is fluff even a term used for WM, or is it a Warhammer thing?)

  • SJSJ College. Forever.Registered User regular
    Nope :(

  • tzeentchlingtzeentchling Doctor of Rocks OaklandRegistered User regular
Old rule books (ie Superiority, Apotheosis, etc) and No Quarter magazines seem to be the only repositories of fluff/stories. There's a reason I'm not getting rid of my Mk I books.
