The first turn is awesome, they actually give you double your time to do it. So the first spring should actually last 48 hours. Then the times go to what they are set at. It's to help prevent first turn NMR.

Oh man, that is some interesting mixes. The players with the most experience are sufficiently spread far enough out that they really can't dominate the new players. Good job RNG.

Except that Stever got France, which is a powerhouse country of awesome
And I got Turkey, which is a butt country of butts. All they like are butts, and I'm pretty sure all they eat are butts.

This game is a lot more stressful than it looks, huh.

well, if'n you're going for historical accuracy, you could just fight ineffectually and let everyone walk all over you...

Is that happening now?
Just curious.
Italy is tough.
haha it was pretty overwhelming at first, I'm glad the first turn is 48 hours.
Strangely enough, Italy is the only country that I have actually managed to win with. I've lost every other game that I've been in. So it may feel stressful, but remember the hard part about Italy is mattering, not surviving. You're almost guaranteed to survive to the midgame, because no one really wants to take you out until then. It's finding someone who will help you get above 4 centers that's the problem.

Yep, I'll echo what Loser said. My best advice for an Italy player is to DO SOMETHING. If you sit around and wait for the board to clear up, you will die because you never got past 4 or 5 centers. Find an ally (in the east, usually) and cling to them until that alliance runs its course.
it's apparently one of the most popular italian openings? i kinda feel like a big ol doodoo head about it though.
i think italy - austria can work but it probably takes some real concrete planning, i think there's a lot of natural tension.
seriously, italy with the first turn stab (I think? I am confused by italy)
what are you playing at italy
working with france?
meanwhile turkey opens up unencumbered by dirty russia
seriously man fuck austria
the early play for Rumania is suuuuuper risky. most russia's don't take it until the fall, but you never know. better to get your guaranteed two and call it a day.

I got a couple messages out of Austria, but not enough to make me really secure in an alliance.
I feel like AH is a country kinda like Italy, except it's a lot easier to be obliterated.

AH either is a major player or explodes spectacularly. AH doesn't usually hang around as a middling power that often. AH is the country I spend the most time writing letters to people with because I know I'm surrounded.
Yeah, with AH, you absolutely need need need a friend very early.
Without one, you crumble. Italy, you can survive without a friend, you just can't do anything. AH needs someone to be their buddy in the East.
AH and Germany lead the stats in tournament eliminations I believe. So it's not the easiest country to get.

No, it is a misspelling of my former roommate's name Cyrus, that I thought was cool and used as my WoW/forum name.

It does work well as a fantasy name. I was just making a lame quasi-racist joke.

I'm currently playing as Italy in a public game, fun, but very odd at times. Current state of affairs:
He'll die soon.
Man, IT, you are committed to the East.
Watch your back.
The Black Hole of Cygnus X-1
Italy continues to be downright mean, France makes a move on Germany and Russia is bounced out of Sweden.
Mon Dieu.
The Black Hole of Cygnus X-1
Turkey, Russia, gain 1
AH remains at 3.
Looks like another typical game where AH can't find an ally.
Not a good strategy, as no one can win alone.
