This is my second or third time reading it, but my first time reading the 30th anniversary edition, which has another new introduction

I love the complete fabrication of the large parts of the backstory for him writing the novel, and the literary conceit that Morgenstern was a real person and Florin and Guilder are real European countries still in existence

Just polished of The Magicians. I found the main character pretty annoying, but it didn't ruin the book for me like it seemed to do for so many other people. And the whole premise was pretty interesting. Plot didn't pick up until halfway through though.

I'm trying to think of a book I read a long time ago about a detective living in some major city like Boston or Wisconsin or something and a portal had opened above the city bringing magic back to the world and he's investigating the death of some old dragon or something. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I've tried googling but I can't find anything.

I am now reading a non-fiction book called Psychovertical, by a guy called Andy Kirkpatrick, about climbing El Cap and other things. If you are at all interested in climbing it is a good read. He is a funny guy and it's really inspiring because this is a (slightly mental) dude who does things when he has a million reasons to not do them, and he gets some fantastic stories out of it. Makes me wish I was better at shutting down the 'no' voice in my head and just doing stuff that scares me.

So...after watching that Hunger Games movie it hyped me up to go back and read the entire series. After reading that I'm wondering does anyone else know of any good sci-fi-ish books with a romantic bend to them? Since it put me into that kind of mode.

The closest I can think of is Anathem by Neal Stephenson and I've already read that.

You could try any of Catherine Asaros Skolian series, I think all of them have some kind of romance in them. And she has a PhD in chemical physics. So her stuff is almost hard science.

have you read Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series? it's more fantasy than scifi but it's good.

Goddamnit, I spent hours in Google searching for fantasy and sci-fi detectives and private investigators. I never thought to look up reporter, nor did I think to look up Cleveland. Thank you, that's the exact book I was looking for.
