I still think the REmake can be pretty unnerving when played from time to time. I liked the concept of taking the haunted house in the woods cliche and cranking it to 11 by having it merely be a front to an underground big-pharma lab gone wild. It also does a decent job of consistently maintaining claustrophobic environments. I wouldn't mind seeing a REmake style treatment for RE2, but I never thought that game's post-apocalyptic setting was scary, just very bleak. Number 3 felt like an also-ran save for the initial nemesis encounters, code veronica just seemed too schlock-y and over the top even by the series' standards.
4 I think is the high point since it managed to reinvent the wheel and distance itself from all the umbrella trappings... which capcom promptly returned to with 5 and added a dull and overly self-important "Africa!" plot. Which didn't do any favors for the (IMO) shoe-horned cooperative element which is an absolute chore to play through solo; something capcom apparently forgot when they tried that with the unremarkable 0.
I don't think it was ever meant to be treated as serious material, but after the runaway success of 2, capcom did what capcom does best by running popular franchises into the ground. These are my opinions on some things.

The hotel, prosthetic limb manufacturer, and snuff film/sewer segments all literally gave me an (admittedly mild) adrenaline rush.
