@Lost Salient have you read any of John Hodgman's books of fake trivia?

They're all fantastic but the last one might be my favorite

Man, I... I own the first one but it got put in storage in Chicago when I moved here.

    :(

About to start the Decameron for class.

    Should be interesting.

This is one of the things I am considering doing after Gentlemen of the Road

Given that I am likely to finish Gents of the Road tonight, what should I start next:

    Finishing Paradise Lost
    The Decameron
    Something Wicked This Way Comes
    Frankenstein
Something else (preferably something else already on my bookshelf and it is creepy if you know everything there but whatever if you've got a good suggestion)

  • Crimson KingCrimson King Registered User regular
    hey the decameron's pretty great

i haven't read much of it but i've enjoyed what i've read

maybe it's just the translation i've got but it can be pretty hard to remember it's seven hundred years old

  • Crimson KingCrimson King Registered User regular
finish Paradise Lost then read the Decameron

i can't stand Bradbury though so I am biased

    Frankenstein

    Alternately

That Regency romance you've got hidden behind your classics shelf

Finished up Gentlemen of the Road last night, and that was a really decent book. A good adventure story. The writing style lost me from time to time, but overall I enjoyed it.

    guys

in Melbourne there is a new independent bookstore that I found

three things about it make me feel like it may be my new favourite place

    1. in their centre display they had Kate Beaton's book right in the middle

    2. they had a Jonathan Lethem book in a country where I have never seen any Lethem in stores

    3.

    ...

    they are called Embiggen Books

it is a place of magic and wonder

I've read the first 4 Dexter books except for the 3rd which I was told to avoid like the plague but I still need to read the 5th one which involved cannibals or something.

I finished the other two books in the Leviathan trilogy and they were all pretty good. I didn't realize they would be so short though, I started and finished the last two in a day each. Less than a day, really, I started reading when I got to work and I was finished well before it was time to go home.

A bunch of friends wanted to go see The Hunger Games movie tonight, so I figured I'd read through the entire book today. Decent but...
The gifts from the sponsors sometimes felt like a bit of a cop-out, and the wolf-things being the other contestants felt really out of place. There are so many things that don't make sense, or just aren't used to contribute to the story as well as they could have be. What do sponsors actually get out of a contestant winning? If the world has been through an environmental distaster, why is everything so pristine, and how can they control the weather?

I'm really tempted to try rewriting the book myself just to fix the things that are really bugging me, and publish it online.

Also I gather it's not worth reading the other two?
