Yes, this. This morning for some reason on my wife's comp the game lagged a tiny bit and I was getting my ass handed to me on tier 1 despite having 4star gear. That and I haven't played in awhile so I'm pretty rusty and wasn't that good to begin with.

In a moment of weakness, I bought some energy to have a go at some of the personal customization options before realizing I didn't really like any of them. I don't have any use for energy, really, so if you're having a bit of trouble upgrading your equipment, I can spare a tithe or two. Getting to 5* is pretty rough, and a lot of gameplay is only available to people with fully tricked-out gear.

It kind of feels like that I need to put in a few hours of play farming Tier 1 to get enough crowns to purchase 100 energy. Is this about right? I am not currently working the auction house to sell stuff.

Yea, if you can't consistently run t2 without dying this is a good option.

The later levels of any tier have a better crown reward, and playing with more people gives you a straight crown boost to offset the sharing of drops. If you play levels packed with enemies - like arena or scarlet fortress - and you're able to clear challenge areas okay, you should have something approaching 100 CE per run. You need to do this less at higher tiers.

because if it's those stupid giant ghosts that you need the candle light to run away from, then they auto-pierce shields
also is your shield straight up breaking, or are you just straight taking damage
if it's the first, upgrade your shield and stop going so deep until you do, if it's the second, then it is lag or a communication problem
good is kinda subjective based on what role you want to fill and what enemies you will be fighting
