Gainax anime doesn't impress me beyond the animation
there's definitely substance
it's not high art or anything but there's more to it than just flash
although yes that is the primary appeal
and the actual like, themes and shit don't start clicking into place until episode 4 or 5

FLCL was basically a big excuse to experiment with new animation techniques
I consider it to be more loosely connected shorts than a proper show
and strung-together it's just long enough to be a movie, so I almost always rewatch it all at once

What about Cowboy Bebop, Anti?
Can't nobody be hating on Cowboy Bebop. It is one of the basic animes of no offense to anybody.
Even the bubble boy could watch it.
On the last day of the bubble boy's life he asked for a copy of Cowboy Bebop. Used the disc to pop his own bubble.
