Also, I tried taking on the Dragon by myself today. He stomped on me and two-shot me dead. And when you solo, you can't use scape dolls to revive. GREAT.

I was going to say "How could you do the dragon quest without me!?" but then I saw the name of the quest. Did that just show up randomly in one of the multi-party areas?

Can't really tell yet, honestly. Mags don't change for the first time until level 50. Even then, I think Mags cap out at 99 in the beta.

You mean to tell me that the computer isn't flawlessly mimicking your play style when it runs into walls repeatedly and casts shifta on nobody?

Funny you mention that, blaze. Your dude got stuck way at the beginning crawling into the wall forever. I had to fight the dragon with two bots. Luckily, both were Forces and cast Resta occasionally. It still took everything I had and two scape dolls to beat it. And yeah, Lork, it can show up in the multi-party areas.

The only thing that's missing is the ability to write obnoxiously stupid dialogue for my bot to randomly spout off, for the true Phantasy Star NPC experience. I can only hope that menu just hasn't been translated yet.

Can anyone in the beta give their initial thoughts? I really liked PSO, but I got into it super late (after people hacked it and made ridiculous gg characters). Also my brother owned the Dreamcast, I had the Playstation.

I have played very little, but with what I did play...

It's got more in depth "systems" closer to PSU. However, it doesn't feel like PSU, it feels like PSO. Which is weird because combat and movement are a lot more complex and fluid than PSO; but still manage to have the feel of PSO and not PSU, if that makes sense. Granted, this is no DMC or anything, it still feels like PSO so combat it still a lot "clunkier" than something you'd find in your console button mashers like DMC. I don't use "clunkier" with any negative connotation, however. Simple combat can be satisfying just as well, done right; and it feels that way here.

Graphically, callbacks to PSO all up ins. So pretty. Music, what little variation there is in the beta (hoping for a lot more later), again, PSO all up in. It's got all the unnecessarily big sweeping space opera music with all those perfect sounds that instantly put you back in PSO but you can't quite explain; but know when you hear, you could want.

I only played a little bit and was torn. Half of me wants to just play all the rest of this event, and half of me wants to behave myself and hold off until there's either an official announcement for a release in the west (which I'm suspecting will happen at E3), and/or info on whether or not ships are going to be locally based or worldwide upon full release (worldwide). I mean, I don't want to get super invested in the japanese servers should they decide to make them regional for a western release.

But yeah, I can easily see losing myself in a way that PSO did, but PSU didn't quite manage to (though I played a ton of PSU too).

Here's a bit of info via Kotaku that explains some of the money/pay stuff. I'm taking them at their word that the core gameplay will be unaffected by any pay options (aside from likely xp boosts and such), and that pay will be relegated to aesthetic stuff like housing and whatnot (which is what they've stated).

Just gonna quote the whole article too:

In March, Sega announced that their upcoming MMORPG, Phantasy Star Online 2 will be smart phone compatible and free to play. In a recent interview with Weekly Famitsu, Phantasy Star series producer, Satoshi Sakai, talked about Sega's somewhat ballsy decision.

Apparently, the decision to make Phantasy Star Online 2 free to play came about very early in the game's production. With the increase of free to play online social games for smart phones, the developers were worried that the public perception of online games was becoming distorted. Most free to play online games are made so that the game's full potential cannot be tapped without some monetary investment. The developers at Sega found this trend of game development that favored players who would/could pay over players who wouldn't/couldn't to be troubling and unfavorable to the game market at a whole. Said Sakai, "By allowing a well made game like PSO to be accessible more people, we felt that we had a chance to teach people that 'This is what online RPGs are supposed to be like.'".

While Phantasy Star Online 2 does have some features that can be bought with money, the developers have restricted these to minor, non-essential areas, like upgrades for players' individual rooms, increased storage space, or trading features. "There is nothing that requires payment that will take away from the intrinsic game experience if they are not purchased." Sakai explained.

Sega has always been a game developer that mixes up the pot, and while not every attempt has been successful (some, like the Dreamcast, being ahead of their time), more often than not, they manage to leave their mark. With Phantasy Star Online 2, Sega is seeking to change the online game market itself. "We are seeking to create a business model that functions while still allowing PSO2 to remain as much of an enjoyable experience as possible." Sakai spoke, reflecting on the online gaming market. "I honestly think that Sega is the only maker that is willing to go this far. Even if we fail, if we can get people to say 'They were 5 years ahead of their time' then I'll have no regrets. I believe that there's meaning in the challenge itself."

Phantasy Star Online 2 is currently in closed beta testing, and looks absolutely beautiful.

So I finally got to play a bit, and while it looks pretty and SCREAMS PSO at me at pretty much every turn (A wonderful thing mind you) I did come across one irk so far. I'm lvl 3, I was progressing merrily through the quests and I got a new quest. But I need to be lvl 5 for the quest. As far as I can tell the only way to do this is to play the other quests i've already done until i'm level 5 (Same system in PSU and PSO if I remember correctly.)

I'm not a huge fan of "Grind these quests to get to the next one" stuff so it did irk me a bit. Does anyone know if I can go somewhere without a quest and just kill stuff? I'd much rather do that than repeat quests.
