You know it won't be up to snuff with that game.

nobody knows that. Sony has created superior clones before. Why can't they do it again?

Not dinging you, but what games are those?

Crash Team Racing blows Mario Kart 64 away. And, nobody played it, but Crash Bash was better than Mario Party, too.
I never played Crash Team Racing, but I agree the RACING in mario kart64 wasn't that great. It was all about the battle mode

You had more battle options in CTR than you did in Mario Kart 64, including the option of adding in bots (and of course it supports 4 players at once). There is also a full-game length quest mode. CTR is a better game all around.

4 player? seems kinda wasted to me on a ps game. how many people had multi-taps? 4 player twisted metal2 woulda been cool though (framerate woulda been a disaster though)

    So it's a waste to include a 4player option in a game built for 4 players... because you didn't own a multi-tap?

I bought mine for this game. I suspect many did. And if it didn't have the 4-player option, I wouldn't doubt you would have knocked it points for only supporting 2 players vs Mario Kart's 4.

I bought my Multitap for Smackdown originally, but I sure as hell used it with CTR.

Perhaps if you read the thread, the available information might have been posted.

    Protip: it has.

The total amount of characters? No it hasn't. There's no official total so far but the initial rumours (from Paul Gale Network) mentioned that they were aiming for around 20.

Something I just thought of, and didn't really notice in the videos, but will this game have items in it? Random stuff from various Sony games? If Crash is in it, the fruits and masks he collects will probably be an item. I'm trying to think of any items that they could have, though.

Also, Kevin Butler as a secret character is a must.

I put well over 300 hours into Mario Kart 64. I have no idea what you guys are talking about... That game was awesome.

Nobody is saying that MK64 is a bad game (except for that one guy who listed 3 completely random mario kart games and proclaimed them to be the only good ones), but rather that CTR was leaps and bounds better, to the point where people who played both never returned to Mario Kart afterwards.

I'd kill for CTR2. And not the awful nitro series.

Ah, well when CTR came out I wrote it off immediately for being a MK clone. I played a lap or two or whatever and thought it was trash, but that would have been my fanboyish side creeping out.

Actually, Mario Kart would later adopt things from CTR, like drift boosting. The way CTR did it, though, was so much fun because you could go from last place to first place without using any items through pure skill thanks to drift boosting. You had 3 levels of boost in any one drift, so you couldn't just snake up and down and rocket past people, because the big boost was the third boost you did, so you had to make sure to time them correctly.

it was such a good rip off.

I don't understand. MK64 had drift boosting and came out 3 years earlier.

Is Crash even a thing anymore?

It's always hilarious to me how many people think that Sony owns Spyro & Crash.

I mean intially that would make sense but both of them have ended up on other consoles at least twice.

Of the two I always figured Spyro had more legs given his games were actually fun to play and not hallways that occasionally shifted camera angles when you dropped down a hole.

also has Crash even had a game this generation? I figured he retired to Bubsy ville a long time ago.

There were a few Crash games on DS, I think.

As for Spyro, there's been as many multiplatform games as there have been Sony exclusive ones, if not more by this point. If they got him, I hope to heck they use his original character style, but I suspect Activision would want the current one as free Skylanders advertising.

Kratos is going to be the "Stone Cold" Steve Austin of this game. Far too serious for the setting he's placed in to be taken credibly.

Is that the Stone Cold Steve Austin who sprayed his boss with a beer truck, the Stone Cold Steve Austin who made same boss wet his pants with a toy gun, the Stone Cold Steve Austin who sings with a guitar, or the Stone Cold Steve Austin who coined "What?" as a catchphrase?

Sorry, I just think saying Stone Cold is "too serious for his environment" is funny; he was almost like a redneck version of the Joker, minus the clown face.

I meant more the early 90s WCW Steve Austin, back when he came in as himself in a field that was still primarily theme wrestlers and wrestling was still somewhat relevant, not later on when they didn't even bother giving wrestlers stage names or costumes anymore and it turned into a reality show version of UFC. Though I digress.

Ah, so "Stunning" Steve Austin. =)

I'd say when I was a kid I was a definite Nintendo fanboy. I cut my gaming teeth on the NES, SNES, and original Game Boy. But I also think that in recent years I have outgrown Nintendo, and I think that's because their business ideology has changed. Nintendo is such a gimmick company now. And most of the time I don't like the gimmicks.

Because of that, I've basically switched my entire allegiance to Sony. And right now, I'm honestly more excited about a SSB knockoff with Sony characters than I am about a real SSB for the Wii U or 3DS.

I love being old enough that there is no such thing as "Allegiance." Sure, it takes me a couple years to save up to buy all the consoles, but really I try to just buy good games.

I really hope this turns out to be a good game.

I own all 3 current gen systems. But I spend about 99.9% of my time on my PS3. I feel like I'm actually invested in the Resistance, Uncharted, and God of War universes.

And I think Sony has a good shot of pulling this off.

Can you imagine what an XBox SSB would be like? It would only have like 5 characters: Master Chief, Cortana, Marcus Phoenix, Dom, and Alan Wake.

Microsoft has Rare, and they'd undoubtedly be able to grab a few characters from 3rd party developers, like Ryu Hyabusa

Oh god, Banjo Kazooie and Conker. O_O

    And Joanna Dark. And battletoads.

    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e8/Battletoads_Coverart.png

    And killer instinct's line up:

    http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090403173558/killerinstinct/images/thumb/5/5b/Fulgore3.jpg/180px-Fulgore3.jpg

    Yes, I'd buy this game.

That would be at once hilarious and enraging, as the latter two have never come anywhere close to a Microsoft console, and that doesn't look to change any time soon.

Incidentally, I'd rather see Killer Instinct 3 before a MicroSmash. Or KI on XBLA.

    And Battletoads arcade.
SSE was my favorite part of SSBB btw. I liked the story a lot. That one cutscene where all the nintendo ships take on Bowser and Ganon's battleship was probably the most awesome thing Nintendo has ever done.

I loved that. A lot of great moments.

This, definitely. I like Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing way more than Mario Kart (pick one), and I'd love to see what they could do here.

Of course, I don't find SSB to be as problematic as Mario Kart, so I doubt it would overtake. But I'd still love to play one.

On another note, some might find this interesting... particularly if you look at when it was published.

It fits their demo, it'd be a nice exclusive during this whole fighting game revival, and I'm fairly certain Nintendo has no access or royalties to it after the Rare sale, so there shouldn't be any legal issues.

I remember asking Nintendo directly about this. Here's an e-mail from like 7.5 years ago:
    Hello,

Thank you for your e-mail. Rare retains rights to the characters that they created, which includes the "Killer Instinct," "Perfect Dark," "Conker," and "Banjo-Kazooie" franchises. Of course, Nintendo's great franchise characters such as Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, and Star Fox remain exclusive to Nintendo systems.

At this time, no plans have been announced for a new version of Killer Instinct for any of Nintendo's systems. Although it's unlikely we'll see Rare release their games on the Nintendo GameCube, you never know what the future might hold, so keep checking our web site (www.nintendo.com) for the latest information.

For complete information on all new or upcoming games for our systems, go to www.nintendo.com and open the "Game List" (located in the upper-right corner of our main page). If you need to narrow your search for a specific type of game (based on release date, publisher, number of players, etc.), try using our Advanced Filtering option. When you bring up your desired listing of game titles, you can click on the name of a game to find out all the information that we currently have available on it. If the information you are looking for is not yet available, please keep checking back. When there is new information to share on announced games or other upcoming products, our web site is the best official source!

Remember, any posted release dates are estimates and subject to change. When it gets close to a product's estimated release date, you may want to check with your local retailers to see when it may be available in your area.

By the way, while you are at our site, be sure to check out the My Nintendo section. Not only does this allow you to monitor the progress of any repairs or part orders that you may have, it also gives you access to the Nintendo Forums where you can interact with other players. Here you can discuss games and systems, and possibly obtain key game play information. Take a look. I think that you will find it helpful.

It would be nice if they got Crash and Spyro in this thing for nostalgia's sake, but I think they key here is to keep expectations reasonable enough so that we're surprised rather than disappointed. (Still bitter about no Mega Man in Brawl.)

I'm not super excited for this, having not played very many first-party Sony games. But I'm always in favor of more fighting games that also function as party games.

SSB has never been my favorite series, but I've always respected how flexible its system is and how much fan service it includes. I just wish it wasn't seen as the only way to do party/fighting games. First TMNT and now Sony.

Which brings me to the point of my post. Power Stone 2 is the best four-player fighting game ever made. If any big companies are reading this: PLEASE RIP IT OFF. Capcom clearly has no interest in the series, so it's totally fair game. The only similar game I know of is Kung-Fu Chaos on the OXbox. Seriously, this style of fighter needs a resurgence.

Before there was Super Smash Bros., there was "Kakuto-Geemu Ryuoh" or Dragon King: The Fighting Game

    Aw10X.jpg

In the "Iwata Asks" for Super Smash Bros., Iwata and Sakurai discuss the origin of the game. Before there were even any Nintendo characters, the game was being created in an attempt to try something new, different, and easy.

    http://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/#/wii/ssbb/6/0
Iwata At that point in time, we weren’t utilizing any Nintendo characters, and while you handled the planning, specs, design, modeling and movement, I worked on programming all by myself. In some respects, it was the ultimate handcrafted project.

Sakurai The team setup was like one that would be making a game for the NES! (laughs) We had one additional person that helped us with sound though.

Iwata It was at a time that we were trying to find ways of making a game that we really wanted to do and bring to fruition, while we were working on other titles. You came to me with an interesting idea and, as I thought you should immediately start work on the project and try and bring it to life, I tried to offer some encouragement by agreeing to do the programming and told you to write up a project plan. As we both had other responsibilities at the time, it was hard to find time to work on it though.

Sakurai If I remember correctly, at the time you were heading another project that took up most of your time.

Iwata I didn’t have any time during the week and had to program on the weekends. I would assemble the data and specs you sent me, and the project slowly took shape as we sent changes back and forth. It was interesting to work on the project though as it grew more entertaining the more I incorporated your ideas.

Sakurai A staff member even complained that you seemed to come to life whenever you were working on the programming for our project. (laughs)

Iwata They were probably right. I felt something special about this title from the very first moment I started programming for it. Even so, we had no idea it would grow to such epic proportions.

Sakurai Right. I mean, we didn’t know at the time that we would be able to use Nintendo characters.

Iwata In retrospect, the main reason I undertook the project was to build a 4-player game that utilized the N64’s unique 3D joystick. What were your reasons?

Sakurai Well, I wanted to offer an alternative to the two-dimensional fighting games that were crowding out the market. I also wanted to see if it was possible to make an interesting 4-player game that offered a new experience every time you play. Simply put, I was aiming to design a 4-player battle royal.

Iwata I seem to remember "4-player Battle Royal" being written on the cover of the project planning document.

My biggest worry is that PSASBR was created with "Sony characters first, fighting game second" in mind. That, in order to compete with Smash, they miss the point of creating a game like this. After the novelty of "I'm playing as Kratos versus Parappa!" wears off, all you're left with is the framework of the fight system to support peoples' interest.

Just take a look at all the fighters in existence. To this day, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo is still widely regarded as one of the best games. Street Fighter in general has been getting it the formula right. Marvel vs. Capcom 2, one of the hypest games ever, has been supplanted by UMVC3, which many would argue is a completely different game. Skulls Girls is a game meant to play and be reminiscent of the MVC2 style of gameplay, yet uses completely different art. How many KoF games have come out and continue to come out? Even Mortal Kombat, after trying so many different styles of combat, returned to the classic gameplay that originally made it popular.

With that in mind, the reveal to this game has been so corporate up to this point. There's no stone left unturned. "Exclusive exclusive exclusive!" Looks like they made sure every major gaming website got their own small preview and write-up. I've now heard Omar Kendall's voice and seen his face plastered around so much that I'm half expecting him to show up as a secret character. If they wanted to really take a page out of SSB's book, here's how the reveal should've gone.

This is probably a lot trickier for Sony than it might first come across. Smash Bros. walks some pretty fine lines on a few levels. One of the most important parts is its sheer coherence. While none of Nintendo's franchises depend particularly heavily on realism (Metroid probably comes closest, in particular the Prime games, and even those have some pretty heavily stylized elements to them), they all have their own distinct feel. SSB does a fantastic job of tweaking all of them just enough to put them on a playing field where none seem too out of place while still remaining true to the various characters' core (compare Bowser in SSB Brawl to New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which came out just 18 months later

Pretty much everyone's had a similar approach taken: still recognizable, but also modified to look like they belong together. Sony tends to try for hyper-realism far more, which could make blending them together far more difficult. How well can you blend Nathan Drake with Ratchet and have them look like they're convincingly battling each other?

Another trick will be in the gameplay. SSB is pretty well honed and supports both immensely accessible/newbie-friendly play as well as tournament-quallity competition (although even Brawl made some mistakes here, showing just how narrow the window is). Fighters are multiplayer games at heart, so they need to be particularly well-tuned, so Sony's got their work cut out for them. Handing something like this to a brand-new studio just cuts the margin for error even more (then again, a brand-new studio gave us Metroid Prime, so it's certainly possible to succeed).

The hardest part of all though will be the nostalgia aspect. SSB is Nintendo's own narcissistic love letter to itself, and it plays this to perfection. From the trophies to the cameos to the references to obscure franchises long-forgotten, SSB plays up Nintendo's history to a pitch-perfect degree. A big part of that success lies in how many other franchises are still active today, which means that you can play up the old stuff with nostalgia as opposed to simply nodding at the old days. That's going to be incredibly tricky for Sony to navigate. First they only have 15-20 years in the market as opposed to Nintendo's 30. Second their major IPs have tended to struggle in the transition from one generation to the next far more (often on purpose, as the studio intentionally ditches them to move on to something else). From the PS1 only Gran Turismo has really held strong as a first party franchise (Twisted Metal is out there for sure, but it's not exactly huge). Crash isn't owned by Sony and hasn't had a relevant game in years. Spyro is also owned elsewhere and is only relevant thanks to Skylanders, a game where he's one of a roster of 32 equally important characters. From the PS2 era Jak and Daxter is pretty much dead other than a token HD collection. Sly has an incoming entry on the PS3 but it's not out yet and who knows if it will be any good? Ratchet and God of War have had strong success on the PS2 and PS3, but that seems to be the exception rather than the rule. What Nintendo can accomplish with a wink and a sly aside Sony will need to be far more direct and could risk coming across as forced.

Purely as a mascot brawler little of this applies beyond getting the gameplay right. But given how much this is aping SSB it's important to keep in mind the larger context of SSB the game above-and-beyond SSB the gameplay, especially since it is a cross-franchise mascot brawler. There's more to making this a success than just getting the moves down, and SuperBot's going to have their hands full trying to finangle the rest of the package together.
