Fyndir's joke reminds me of how I get so many friends telling me to "just find [them] something to do with copy-editing so I can work from home too"

Sure! It's really easy! It's not like I spend longer looking for work than actually working! And the best part is when you imply that I'm keeping all the work for myself. That's me, a big old work hoarder, I am a dragon of editing a top a mound of badly spelled words

Look, everyone knows that when the mines closed copy editing became the backbone of the working class economy, it's cheap unskilled labour that anyone can do, and you've got a slightly smaller chance of contracting black lung!

I know that feeling Indie. I feel like a real arse for whining about things when people have far worse issues at their work (like having to actually leave their house to work, for a start), but considering that I'm already doing stupid early morning shifts for this stupid agency I'm going mad because I have to spend those early mornings with a daft new aide constantly messaging me.

Except my "buddy" in this buddy system is more like a damn ball and chain. He or she turns up online two hours after the contract begins, which is perhaps a blessing in disguise because when they are around I'm left trying to explain the most painfully simplistic things

"How do we know which spelling they want?"

Well that's easy, effect and affect are two different words and they're still two different words in both British English and American English

    "Okay so... I replace this 's' with a 'z'."

No, that'd be an American spelling.

"But they're an American client! I don't get it!"

They're an American client who specifically hired the agency to assign contractors torture freelancers and Britishicate their documentation, this is insultingly simple why am I having to tell you this three times now

I've got a nagging suspicion that this person is completely and utterly new to the field and that these buggers are taking the piss by trying to make me train someone up on the side. Which I wouldn't mind doing, if that had been what I signed up for, and yet by that same token I'm loathe to say anything in case they decide never to extend a contract my way again

Wait, you edit copy from home? Train me instead. I just gotta learn where all those superfluous u's go.

There are websites that will let you look up average salaries by industry and location. I think the more accurate/job-specific ones tend to want folks to pay for the service now, but if you take a sampling from several of the free ones you can get a rough idea of a real average. Then adjust based on your experience level and the type/size of the company. Then, I guess decide whether the specific job listing or application interaction would make it more appropriate to list a salary range or a solid figure + "total compensation negotiable with regards to salary, benefits, and blah blah blah company expectations whatever."

So I have an interview on Tuesday, but after some research it seems that the living rates of the area are significantly more than the rest of the country. I'm not kidding, its freaking crazy. So I've worked out with my family what a livable wage would be, and I won't accept less because I cannot live in a ditch.

It would be lovely if they offer me the livable wage, because it looks a great place to work and they should be aware of the price of living there. Unfortunately I've got to be practical and they may not - they may try to take me for a ride! On the bright side, this has helped me freak out less and put my feet on the ground, which is a good thing.

Right, I will be picking up my application to join to Police full time this Wednesday, and I'll have two weeks to do it. I'm on holiday for a week right in the middle of that, so I'll need to get some serious writing done the two days before and after the holiday. Oh, I also have a stag do for my brother before the deadline too, great! Gonna try my best though, If I get in I'm pretty much set for life.

I was told to think of how much you (realistically) want, so whatever you're earning now or what you think you should go up to. Then ask for £1k more than that.

The person who told me this was just some guy I know though, so who knows if he has any clue.

edit: of course I'm talking about jobs in the range of £15,000-£20,000. If you're looking at more £80,000 or whatever than adding £1k is kind of meaningless.

My rule of thumb was that I had to get paid more than my sister. Yes, we're in completely different fields, but that's not the point dammit!

Worked out well til she got a new job that paid a lot more. Pshaw!

Goal I made when I was younger: to make more than my folks combined.
To be fair, my folks don't make a ton. But, I like money, so seemed like a nice goal.
    Think I'm just about there.

e: I don't know what they're making nowadays, but I have reached somewhat arbitrary number I decided it was when I was younger, so that's nice. After moving and such I can work on paying back my student loans!

I'm sure you'll knock the interview itself out of the park, so it's just a question of whether or not they're going to offer reasonable pay. Best of luck on both counts!

Tempted to quit this current job. The actual responsibilities and stress are way down compared to other jobs I've worked, but management has its head so far its up ass, fucking things up and being bipolar, that it compensates. It's actually made this job WORSE than my last one. SOMEHOW. SOME FUCKING HOW.
