OK. I take back everything I said. All you people terrify me and give me nightmares.

"they couldn't HANDEL their bad BACHS"

    Woof.

Thank god you got out of the pun game.

[Edit] Ugh it's 3am. But it's amazing charting the course of some of the old regulars, even just from an art standpoint and not just "I posted on the same internet forum". Like what Olly was posting before deciding "eh, maybe I'll try t-shirts".

And then there are people like Gibs who were pretty consistently (maddeningly?) awesome at each stage.

I just avoid the issue by not saying anything to anyone about anything. If someone wants to talk to me I just point behind them and then run away while their head is turned.

Ditto. It makes me depressed at how slow I've been to improve. I mean, I know I'm better at drawing and painting now, but it doesn't feel like there's an obviously and unmistakabley noticeable 6+ years of difference between my current work and that work, and that drives me nuts.

I get the false impression of dramatic improvement because I spent years aping the style of much more talented forumers before dedicating any time to serious practice.

Oh Bacon, I always forget to ask... you wouldn't happen to still have avatar you drew for me do you? I kinda want put a decent res version up on my facebook as my profile pic.

If not, definitely don't sweat it, I should have asked months ago when you first made it.

The exterior is similar, sure, but the drawing fundamentals are much improved. You look through and the old work has consistently good colors and values, but really iffy drawing. That's kind of how it works with painter types, though. They/you excel at a cool sheen on top of bad drawing so it looks "better" earlier.

What weirded me out was seeing traits of my current work that existed back then, as if they were flaws that should've been excised with practice, but slipped through somehow.

Oh god, I had completely forgotten about Alduar. I wonder what he's up to these days, probably a big-shot art director by now.

Scene: A palatial estate, Alduar sits on a wrought iron and silk cushion reclining outdoor chiar, beside an intricate table dhaded by a fine umbrella, all of his own design. His hand is working casually over a small sketchpad as the midmorning sun basks over his skin. A butler arrives.

Butler: Master Alduar, your morning appointment is here.
Alduar: The president? Let him wait. I'm busy laying out the composition of my next piece.
Butler: But sir, he is most worried about the North Korea commission. Without your art they threaten to attack Seoul by day's end.
Alduar: Ah, well there is plenty of time for that once I'm finished with this, then.
Butler: But, Master Alduar you haven't started it yet!
Alduar: Of course. With a talent like mine placating a hostile power with art is something that will only take a few moments at best. Now, sharpen these pencils, will you?

I'm so glad the old archive is still up. That was so long ago, when I was still Frank the Ninja :D

wait you were Frank the Ninja? FFFFff how did I not know?

Alduar was always cool too! I don't remember him ever being a dick like some of the peoples around here.

Also it sounds like maybe we should once again resurrect the redraw thread so you guys can see your own progress! Maybe it can be a redraw of the first thing you ever posted (if you can remember what it was)!

You guys have just amassed three solid pages of nostalgia in a single day... damn I wish I was around back then. Except in 2005 I was 11 and it would probably involve me and a lot of fart jokes and terrible English. Anyways, holy carp the artchive is great. Seeing how much you talented fuckers once sucked too really brings hope. I have been here for long enough to notice a slight decrease in activity too though, the AC challenge tells a lot about activity. When I first joined there were at least 10 submissions to each challenge, now though... not so much, which is sad considering how fucking awesome the challenges are.

  • melting_dollmelting_doll Registered User regular
I always have a good idea for the challenge but I forget to do them. Over the past couple of years I know my activity here has dwindled, due to working 7 days and basic life crap.

Guys you may remember how gung ho I was about adopting a dog a couple weeks back.

Well, things did not work out super well in her foster period. She had insane separation anxiety, barking whenever I was away, issues with the cats, issues with food aggression (she bit my husband for trying to move her bowl), issues combining food aggression and the cats, issues with getting defensive of me vs. my husband (not to mention anyone who visited the house) and I just can't muster the patience/perseverance to deal with all of it because the weekend after she came home I also found out I was pregnant.

I'm taking the dog back to the shelter later today and feeling just awful about the whole thing. I wish I'd known about the latter development a week sooner; I would have opted out of adopting the dog and not put her through this.

Feeling so, so :( you guys.

Squid you did the responsible thing, nothing to feel bad about.

Also congrats! I Just went to go see my new nephew, babies are amazing!

Also the Artchive makes me feel bad because some how my cute cartoons look almost exactly the same now as they did then minus anime eyes.

But what the fuck happened in 2005 that I went from this:

    to this
