What it is

The Successor to the West Coast Super Trip (the nerdy caravan that started it all) The West Coast Train Trip, or "PAXTrain" for short, is a coordinated effort for PAX-goers to ride the same train at the same time going up the western coast of the United States - both as an alternative to driving or flying, and to enjoy an intimate "mini-convention".

Why the train?

The PAXTrain Staff

I know that a small percentage of people have issue with an organized "PAXTrain Staff." There was some drama in 2008. "You are on a power trip and need to settle down." Please understand that to keep good relations with Amtrak and not have a bunch of people booted off the train in the middle of butte valley, we present the Amtrak Staff with a Face (or faces) who represents us as a group. This helps keep the staff more at ease and provides everyone on both sides with a go to guy(or go to people) with whom they can speak if there is a problem. If any of the PAXTrain staff seems at any time to be rude or power tripping, please know that it is because we don't like being yelled at by Amtrak Staff, and yes Amtrak staff has on occasion asked PAXTrain staff to quell some problems that have come up. (Noise, crowding the isle, hogging the obs. deck, etc.)

Hmmm ... seriously considering that the $126 and $50 worth of gas is worth the drive to Eugene, leave truck in friend's care, drive it back home after PAX. Damn the train for not coming through Grants Pass.

Here's a question; considering the phenomenal success of Cards Against Humanity at PAX East 2012, will you allow it to be played during the WCTT? I ask this because the game is somewhat offensive, which is why it's so popular. But it can get rather loud as players read out the cards, hence the query. The last thing you want is AMTRAK throwing you off the train because you were playing the game.

Tix Purchased, I've got about 225 RB DLC songs on my Xbox at this point that I can bring, along with Mics,Keys, and guitars.

I'm trying to ride the train for the first time and was interested in buying a sleeper car (just the two bed one) and since it would only be me going up is there anyone interested in splitting that cost? I'm getting on in Sacramento. I just can't believe how expensive that car is! $200+ for one way!?!?! Before I buy one, those who have experience...would you have liked one or are they unnecessary?

@kropotkin - Card Against Humanity was played on the PAXTrain 2011, before East had even heard of it! It was either played waaay late at night or close to the end of the trip- I was too delirious by that point to remember. I've bought a deck since then, I'll bring it. Don't have the expansion though.

ANYWAY- I'm planning on taking the train all the way, starting in LA!

I had a sleeper car a couple years back and I will say as much as I did enjoy sleeping horizontal and taking a shower, the price was definitely not worth it. The bed was tiny and the room is incredibly small. If you can survive one night sleeping in a chair I'd say save the extra cash and spend it on gaming.

Also I plan on having another rousing game of Aye Dark Overlord and hope it's as enjoyable as last year!

oh man that game is fantastic! Count me in! Guess you're right about the sleeper car...but laying down just sounds sooooo good...but whatever...I am looking forward to having my costumes travel without baggage fees and in a much more safe manner than the planes

I will be along for the ride again this year, bringing Tales of Shit That Happened at East (for those interested) and reconnecting with friends made on the trip last year. I will also be bringing a friend for whom it will be his first PAX. Tempted to start the trip in LA but I will most likely be picking it up in Simi again (about 65 miles into the route). Can't wait!

If you just bought the "default" ticket (i.e. no Sleeper or Lower car request), you will be assigned a seat in the upper level of one of the coach cars.

Do people usually take taxis from the train station to their hotels? If so, how much does that usually run?

  • JHawkJHawk Registered User regular
Depends on where your hotel is. The Sheraton and other nearby hotels are only about 15 blocks away from King street station, so either taxi, bus/lightrail, or, if you're up for it and don't have too much baggage, walking :)

  • AcubedAcubed Registered User regular
I heard last year that Amtrak can "easily" attach an observation car to the back of the train too, so as not to disturb the rest of the train when moving from the very back (where the LAX-departing people are). Has anyone asked about that?

Several of us had a discussion with one of the conductors on the return trip last year about this (and the ability to designate it as a private car). My takeaway was that it would require a bit of extra coordination on our part, since we would be responsible for the cost of adding the extra car. Not sure how much lead-in time Amtrak would need to make it happen, either. Someone else may better remember the conversation.

Regarding Sleeper Cars: the other consideration is that the sleeper car includes meals in the dining car, which are pretty expensive a la carte, to the tune of $15-$20. The snack car food is an outright rip off, imo. Packing your own food is the most cost-effective option, but if you don't want the hassle, a sleeper is well worth it. And you can access the shower, too. I find it worthwhile to be rested and fed so that I can arrive at the con feeling like a human being.

Regarding T-Shirts: I can talk to Amanda, who made previous years' shirts, but she won't be coming this year (not to get into details, but we're no longer together). So if another qualified person wants to throw their hat in the ring, let me know. I was pretty happy with the place we got to produce them the last two years, so I'm still happy to handle the production and distribution. I was not planning on offering the Ladies cut this year. Even at a couple bucks extra they drive up the price for everyone, and it's hard to accurately estimate how many to make.

Getting on in Chico again this year. I was so happy with Cards Against Humanity that I bought my own set and will have them on the ride up and the ride back. Also, will have my 3DS and some games.

My group decided to take the train up from Olympia area this year, but unfortunately the "Pax Train" would get in much later then we want to leave. So we are taking an earlier, boring normal train.
We will however be on the return train, even if it is only for a hour and a half.

I thought it was worth it. I flew from Tokyo to seattle, then flew back down a few days later to LA to catch the train back upto seattle. Was well worth it to me as I met some amazing folks last year.

I know some said walking is pretty easy. But last year me and 3 others I met on the train took a Cab. Came out to like $5 a person and saved us some much needed energy after the long train trip..haha (Only slept like 3 hours from LA)

Yeah, cab ride for me last year was $6. Waiting for an empty cab on the other hand took about half an hour. Still, would cab ride again.

quick question...how do you guys handle the food issue? I've seen that Amtrak food is crazy expensive and people recommend bringing stuff to snack but what resources do we have access to? Microwaves? Can we bring icechests as long as they're small enough? How have you guys dealt with this in the past?
