Here's something that I haven't put thought into yet.
So, can we sell characters on RMAH or not? It's not clear from the FAQ. Thanks.

The auction house doesn't have the ability for you to sell characters yet, no, but it's something we're looking to add.

Eventually, I wonder if I could level heroes to 60 and then sell them for $30 each, considering WoW toons go for $50+ with high tier crafted gear.

Do you HAVE to have an authentictor to play D3? And if so, is there a way to fake the mobile app into thinking my computer is a smartphone (so I don't have to pay for either shipping of the physical one or the phone for the app)?

Naw, you don't need one to play. But if you don't, good luck!

Bonus points if some asshole sticks an authenticator to your account after they take all your shit.

No, you don't need one to play, but it's an easy way to have another layer of security to prevent someone from hacking your account that you'll be putting tens if not hundreds of hours into. There are free iPhone and Android apps if you don't want to buy a physical authenticator.

If you ever need to restore your phone, or if you clear it out before you buy a new one, make sure you take the authenticator off of your account first. Failure to do so will result in a new "Serial Number" being assigned when you re-download the app, and you won't be able to access your account w/o calling support.

Yeah, that seems kind of silly. Also, I'm assuming they're going to allow you to buy one with Blizzard Bucks, or whatever they're calling their own money. So you could technically get one for "free" by selling in game items on the RMAH.

So most of this is in the thread already, I think, but it's sort of spread out. To your main two questions, though :

    1. You do NOT need an authenticator to play D3. You also don't need an authenticator to use the RMAH, but your max battle net balance will be lower than someone who does have an authenticator attached. From the Blizzard Auction House "How-To" article, it says "If your Battle.net Balance reaches a certain limit, you’ll be required to attach one of the authenticators listed above before you can add to your Battle.net Balance or post Battle.net Balance-related auctions." That limit is $100. Once you're above $100 in your balance, you need to attach an authenticator, which will raise your balance limit to $250.

    2. The mobile app piece is required if you want to actually use real money, not blizzard bucks, for either buying or selling on the RMAH. From that same How-To article, it says " You will be required to sign up for the Mobile Alerts service in order to use PayPal to buy or sell items in Diablo III’s real-money auction house." So that's pretty straightforward. And I honestly don't know if it's possible to spoof that, as I really haven't looked into SMS spoofing/emulating on a different device. Essentially the service sends you a text message with a code periodically to verify your identity.

So, long story short, the authenticator and mobile app stuff are both for RMAH stuff wrt Diablo 3.

I did this before when my phone's MicroSD card failed.

When you start the authenticator code app for the first time, you're given a code--at least on WP7, it warns you, "KEEP THIS CODE INCASE YOU LOSE YOUR PHONE OR WHATEVER". You'll need the code to disarm your authenticator on Blizzard's website.

Found this in a cache on MMO Champions website. Use at your own risk (though I don't think the risk is very high, really)

I don't know how many times a day threads are made regarding people getting hacked, people not using authenticators, accounts tempbans/permabans/closures, etc. I understand that some people have a beef with paying $6USD for a keyfob, so here's how use the Blizzard Mobile Authenticator for free (even if you don't have a phone!)

    1. http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/download-google-android-emulator/ - this site gives you the basic run, it is a standalone Android emulator for Windows (running Android 1.5). No "messy" Java Installs, no Android SDK Manager to fiddle with... you literally download and unzip the file, and run a file named "Run_Emulator".
    2. http://handheld.softpedia.com/get/Desktop-and-Shell/Windows/APKInstaller-82955.shtml - Once the emulator is up and running, download a program called "APK installer" from this link and install it (Windows only)
    3. Obtain a copy of the Blizzard Mobile Authenticator application for Android. Since the emulator won't have an Android Market application installed, you'll need to search around for it (filename is com.blizzard.bma-1.apk).
    4. Once you've downloaded the file, double-click on it, follow the APK Installer prompts (make sure the emulator is still up and running), and it will thread the application directly into the emulated phone.

Congratulations, you now have a free Blizzard Authenticator. No keyfob required, not even a mobile phone required, and most importantly, no more excuses not to use one. If you have a computer, you're good to go. As far as Macs... well, still working on a solution for you lot. I don't have a Mac to test with, so that somewhat limits my capabilities.

edit: Apparently there are some folks that are a bit worried about ZOMGZIPFILES. Understandable, perhaps, though that's probably enough tinfoil to cover the majority of Kansas. In any event, should you be dissuaded by said links and want it straight from the proverbial horse's mouth:

    - http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html <-- Android SDK emulator, straight from the horse's mouth.
    - http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/ja...ads/index.html <-- Download the Java JDK. It *must* be the JDK, JRE is not enough.
    - http://www.aproov.com: alternative to the Android App store. Create an account, do a search for 'authenticator' and results shall bear fruit. And just for the extra-tinfoilly, the MD5 for the Blizzard authenticator from that app store matches that of the Android App Store (90E92EBEC81DF45D8CAFB74FA3E835E4)

Just a heads up to everyone interested in the physical authenticators. Blizzard has waived shipping fees, for I don't know how long. Just ordered one and it cost me like 6.75 in all, not a bad investment if you ask me - and I greatly prefer the physical authenticators vs. the app based ones.

You should just get an authenticator, even the phone number one, which is a toll-free number. Without it, all a hacker needs to get into your account is your login e-mail and time for the password generator to guess your password.

I haven't played WoW in months. My account got hacked last week. They sold everything and did a paid character transfer (which is how i caught them, i got an invoice in my email). I called support and caught it pretty quick, but it was an annoying inconvenience.
