Except that it doesn't. Foot combat is, in many ways, superior to mounted combat, and there's enough history showing cavalry being utterly destroyed by foot troops (Roman, German, English, Scottish, Japaneese history, ect) and, more recently in history, ranged troops (Agincourt, Charge of the Light Brigade, WWI) . The most basic weapons defeat mounted fighters. Spears, two handed mauls, pikes, these were all very effective against mounted knights. I've always wondered why spears almost never show up in MMOs, as they appear absolutely everywhere in history and fantasy. Anyways, the "right" way of doing it would include a system of heavier armor equating to slower movement, no damage increase except for adding certain "mounted only" weapons, an increased crit chance with melee and a decrease in hit chance with ranged. The ability to basically make mounts a secondary character like a pet instead of the ridiculous implementation that's been tried where they act as a buff, is essential, as it allows players fighting mounted characters to take out the mount but not create a situation where everything you put into the mount is lost when that happens. Realistically, any cripple spell would pretty much kill a charging horse.

You and me both, dude. Spears are my favourite weapon.

Spears were THE FIRST weapon (unless you count a rock or club) mankind created. Pointed stick ftw. The lack of spears in games annoys me to no end. You wouldn't believe my frustration when I saw GW2 had
spears, but were only useable underwater.

It bugs me that RPG's weapon selection has literally become cliche. Swords, Maces, Staves, Bows, Axes, Daggers. Polearms often get cut. Where's the love for the ball 'n chain? :(

Ball and Chain is a pain in the ass to animate afaik.

Spears are good for formations, not so good for individual combat.

Although, really, GW2 has alot of obvious holes in weapon types that I just assume they'll add eventually if they can design another weapon for each class (polearms, 2H axes, etc)

Spears are fine for individual combat. Depending on the length of the spear. There are entire fighting styles made for spear use.

    Pikes are not.

I'm an animator and that excuse is just that... an excuse. Asheron's Call 2 had flails and that game came out 10 years ago now.

I would imagine its more of a problem from the design from square one sort of thing than just 'animation'

    What classes would use it?
What sort of interesting skills can we give it to make it unique to the mace. (lets be honest ball and chain practically does the same job as the mace, bashes people with blunt force)

Spear on the other hand I can come up with a unique role for. Its a thrusting weapon, with some blunt options. Vs the Axe/sword which are slashing motions, and mace/hammer which is blunt.

Game already has Shortbow and Longbow - I had those equipped as my two weapons to make a pure ranged ranger. The weapon skill system lets them very easily distinguish any new weapon they want, regardless of how close to another weapon it would be in the real world.

Edit: And yes, I realize there are major differences between those two bows in reality, just in MMO/RPG world it can be hard to truly distinguish weapons without making one completely irrelevant

To be fair, that was more of a javelin.

Edit: I'd kind of like to see corsair made into a profession, although I suppose they would come out with another heavy armor profession (Samurai? Maybe an arcane heavy armor user as opposed to mystical one?) before adding any more adventurer or scholar ones (my only reasoning being that there are 2 heavy armor users instead of 3).

Tengu are the obvious choice. Centaurs might happen, too, but I have to wonder how they'd fit into a Siege Golem. Nagas were apparently peaceful until the Jade Wind killed most of them, leaving the rest to seek revenge on humanity, but snakes aren't exactly popular (see ophidiophobia). Skritt aren't smart enough if they aren't in groups, and Jotun and Kodan don't appear to ever become available, and harpies introduce the issue of "Why can't I fly?" Undead might be possible - Palawa Joko is a despot, but the Charr aren't exactly a nice governing body, either.

On the other hand, ArenaNet may just invent an entirely new race altogether, like they did with the Sylvari.

Under [Your Name]\Documents\Guild Wars Gw2Dev folder, you’ll see that GW2 creates a Music folder next to the Screens folder (where screenshots go). All you need to do to get your external music collection playing in the game is to create a playlist of the appropriate name and type in this folder.

Supported playlist formats are .wpl, .m3u, .pls, .asx, and .wax.

Supported audio types are everything FMOD supports by default, which includes .mp3, .ogg, .flac, .wav. aiff, and a bunch of old-school music formats, like .mid or .it files.

There are eight specific playlists the game recognizes, and these are designated simply by the playlist’s file name. They are: Ambient, Battle, Underwater, City, Crafting, BossBattle, NightTime, and MainMenu.

I am highly tempted to create a BossBattle playlist from Final Fantasy tunes.

Oh man I sure am excited to spend 5 minutes running through copy pasted trees and terrain while I dodge or just straight run from every enemy in my path that doesn't have a fancy name to get to the next heart or DE I run into! I sure am excited to do this 50 times per zone! This is the height of gameplay and really defines the world for me.

It's a cheat to skip content. If you're not enjoying the content why are you playing the game?
Because the content that is comprised of auto-running and avoiding fights is only part of the wide-range of content that I would actually like to engage in.

But the content of the game is in those areas you think nothing is going on. I have many examples where I thought I was just running through an area to get somewhere else and I ended up being side tracked by countless DE's and going off to explore new places. You'd miss a lot of the game just skipping over places you "thought" had nothing there.

That is completely fine. Given the choice between puttering around looking for something I think would be cool to do or going somewhere I know there is something cool to do, I will choose the latter and you can choose the former and we will both be happy. I do not see the issue here?

Edit: @arthil hell yes to boats!

How can he do the former if it's completely false, and thus doesn't exist?

I remember an interview a while ago where it was stated that there’d be an in-game option to customize our soundtrack. Like, replace tracks that played at certain points with others.

Was that cut, or is it just not in yet? I loved the idea of this feature!
It’s actually in and working, but the feature wasn’t publicly documented. Here’s how it currently works:

Under [Your Name]\Documents\Guild Wars Gw2Dev folder, you’ll see that GW2 creates a Music folder next to the Screens folder (where screenshots go). All you need to do to get your external music collection playing in the game is to create a playlist of the appropriate name and type in this folder.

There are eight specific playlists the game recognizes, and these are designated simply by the playlist’s file name. They are: Ambient, Battle, Underwater, City, Crafting, BossBattle, NightTime, and MainMenu. Hopefully these are somewhat self-explanatory in terms of when you might expect to hear them play.

So, for example, if you create a playlist called Ambient.m3u, anything in that playlist will be heard instead of the standard in-game ambient music (the general music you hear when running around in the world).

Each internal playlist can designate a primary and secondary playlist to look for. Most of the playlists will fall back to Ambient if they do not exist. This means that if you’d like to simply replace the majority of the music in the game, you can just create an Ambient playlist, or maybe just Ambient and Battle. However, if you really want to customize your playlist in detail, you can create the more specialized playlists such as NightTime or Crafting.

The easiest (and at the moment, the only) way to test this is with a MainMenu playlist, since that will replace the music at the login screen.

But then, what about a rogue using a bow while riding a horse versus a warrior wielding a spear on a horse. Or a necromancer and his minions, etc, etc.

In my mind all is does is essentially double the complexity, without necessarily doubling the fun. Either that or you make it so simple that it's really pointless to begin with.

Right, so exactly like ironzerg said, it's a huge complication to the combat system. For little to no purpose.
Because it feels silly walking into the Charr capitol and seeing all the utterly useless tank and bike statues (which I must assume that they are, since no one will ever be shown riding one), or fighting to save horses that no one ever rides, or later going to the asura homeland to check out the golems that...oh wait, you actually can ride in a golem.

No mounts in a game world where mounts exist is just as silly as a game where cavalry exists but you can't fight on the back of your mount, or where the mount is only the metaphysical manifestation of a "mount" buff.

How about that back slot WaM? Can we expect more than just cloaks? Like how engineers can run around with camping backpacks? Could my warrior get a ruck sack? How about a turtle shell to slap on my back, or a shield that is just on my back for looks instead of being usable(would people think that's dumb?).

What about guild banner I could put on there? Or a Shark Fin so I can just swim around Dreadmere lake keep, scaring anyone that wishes to assault it? Dun un... dun un.. dun un..

I want a cloak that looks like an overcoat that I drape over my shoulders without putting my hands in the sleeves. Example:

    Garp_20_years_ago.jpg

I've always liked this look. It would go great with a pirate outfit. Make it happen Arenanet.

Coming to you live from a world where nobody seems to know what sleeves are and the lining of your jacket is actually duct tape. :P

The problem is mounted combat, if done "right" would be superior to being on foot. Thus, EVERYONE would be forced to stay mounted or not be competitive. Unless the devs then tried to balance out being on foot with being mounted. Of course, then you have to not only balance the warrior versus the rogue, but the warrior versus the rogue ON HORSES.

I'm an animator and that excuse is just that... an excuse. Asheron's Call 2 had flails and that game came out 10 years ago now.

Most animators are dying for a challenge. Cleaning up mocap data grows stale.

ANet has some amazing animators on board, too. Seen the ranger raven pet? I was running around with one for quite a while just to watch it fly behind me, alternating gliding and flapping, looking like a real bird. Then there are the small animated effects they added. Next BWE, go find a Hylek (frog dude) NPC in Lion's Arch and watch it for a few minutes.

They could totally handle animating unusual weapons like a ball and chain or flail. And they've already said they plan to add new weapons in expansions, so we'll see what they do!

Not that I don't believe you, but do you have a source?
