Is the DNC (or party in general) at all responsible for the shitty work conditions in NC? Cause if not, the fuck are they complaining about?

  • HounHoun Registered User regular
The fact that they are employing people and contracting services from businesses in a union-hostile state.

Basically, the Unions don't want to give the DNC money to hand to Anti-Union businesses.

So what should the DNC do? Honest question.

There are literally only two reasons why a party holds their convention in a particular state. Either they're trying to convert a state to their side or they're trying to prevent a state from converting to the other side. The only reason the DNC would choose to hold their convention in North Carolina is because they feel they can make progress in pushing the state more blue. The only reason RNC is holding their convention in Tampa Bay is to try to prevent Florida from flipping blue.

If unions are pissed with how NC treats unions, is there any other better way to change that than the state becoming more friendly to Democrats during elections???

There is a third option: Saying "we like the way this state is run and want to show that we support its current course".

Which by the way is going to be at least part of the story in Tampa.

Or a fourth option: "we don't really like those nasty unions, we hate them as much as the people of NC do".

Alternative presentation as: "We are not the Hippie, Union supporting Dems of yesteryear, we are patriotic american supporters of Job Creators. The Real American Heroes"

The fourth option by the way is pretty much the DNC stance for the last 30 years. The DNC has sold Unions out time and time again. If Union financial support of the DNC was a investment in the Stock Market, the SEC would be involved.

You joke, but that's what they want to do. And I think it's honestly not a bad idea.

What the Unions are pissed about isn't just that North Carolina is a Right To Work state -- it's that the convention committee had previously awarded contracts to non-union firms. That's verbotten in Democratic electoral politics usually; even in right to work states, you always contract your lit printing or services out to a labor-friendly shop.

    Good for you!

Here's a trick I learned a few years back: whenever I need something fixed in my house -- the plumbings not working, the stairs need fixing, whatever -- if I don't know how to do it myself or don't have the time, I call the nearest relevant union local and ask for a referral for a tradesman. Last time I did this, someone had tried breaking into my house and damaged the doorframe. I called a non-union subcontractor first to ask for a quote to repair the damage, and they said it would cost me about $300. The carpentered I had referred to me through CJA said he would do it for $80. I gave him an even $100 because Jesus did he ever underbid.

    What's "the bug?"

So, after thinking about this on the way home I decided that it's not really in the money that's bothering me. Because like a few people pointed out, it's only the DNC that they are withholding money from not candidates.

It's more that this is another instance of Dems having to herd cats. You rarely hear about a big conservative constituency withholding their support, but the Dems seem to be pissing off/disagreeing with somebody in their own party every other day. It's exhausting being the "big tent party" sometimes.

Water Guns Banned, Handguns Allowed at GOP Convention

Someone on Reddit made the point that if the Republicans got water on them they would melt, I think that's a good assumption.

Excuse me Florida, but the Constitution says "make no law abridging the right to bear arms" - not firearms, just arms. George Washington wanted me to bring my Supersoaker 300 waterarm wherever I go, and you can't stop me.

Yep, specifically the printer union local mark. It's quite distinctive:

They're registered trademarks, so any scab shop using them are opening themselves to a world of legal hurt.

One should also remember that the unions are not the DNC's only interest group and it'd be stupid if they only listened to them.

It'd be great if all fifty states were worker friendly, it really would be.

But they aren't, and you don't get to piss on the cheerios of millions of voters just because you made a union feel sad on the inside.

But they are a Democratic interest group. Why can't they criticize the party vocally for doing something they don't agree with? Big business and the politically connected shouldn't have a monopoly on the party's time. America already have one party who does that, it doesn't need two.
We're playing with live ammo here.

The Democrats should have thought about that when they decided to hold a convention in an anti-union state. Or at least found a solution to appease them without leaving the state, like the idea of bringing in union members from other states to be employed at the event.

Why is it called a bug?

Look at the shape, and consider that in normal use, it's only about a half inch long.

His campaign lost a gay staffer because they were unwilling to stand up to the faction of the party that hates gays. The Republicans are also made up of often incompatible factions (small government, Christian fundamentalists, racists, neocons, a few actual conservatives, the rich), but they do a better job coordinating/pandering/unifying-through-hate than the Democrats.

The racist asshole GOPers won't get it. To them it wouldn't be a satire, they'd consider it validating their beliefs. Poe's Law strikes again.

I would argue that you hear about a big conservative constituency withholding their support more often, but SEE it far less often. Nobody beats the right at being whiny crybabies screaming about homogays but they still march lock-step when it comes time to vote.

Meanwhile the left, whether through being ignored or not fighting loudly will not pull the debate back to the left, but will "refuse to vote in protest" because "everyone's corrupt."

So the GOP jumped all over the Chen thing while the situation was very much in flux, invoking near-maximum derp. Now that it looks like the situation is resolved favorably, think there'll be any blowback onto them?
