The upgrade versions do allow an upgrade from 32 to 64, but they aren't any cheaper.
Anyway I think I've got the list nailed down for now, unless prices for other stuff go down in the next few weeks.
CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
Motherboard: Asrock Z77 Extreme4 M Intel Z77
SSD : Samsung 128GB SSD 830 Desktop Series SATA 6Gb/s
GPU: Sapphire HD 7870 2048MB GDDR5
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Elite 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-14900C9 1866MHz
PSU: Corsair Enthusiast Series TX650M High Performance 650W '80 Plus Bronze' Modular Power Supply
Case: Corsair Carbide 500R
Already have a 1TB HD that I'll format and use for main storage until I can grab a newer and slightly faster one when prices go down.
I'm not sure if it's an old wives tale or not, but I'm under the impression that every Windows disk has all the versions on it? Like, you buy the same disk for x64 Home as you do for x86 Professional, it's just that they come in different packaging, with the appropriate key included?

I know that retail and upgrade copies of Win 7 include both 64 and 32 bit versions, but I've never heard that all the installers were included/identical.
A question for you smart people. If I uninstall my copy of W7 from this laptop, and install Linux on it instead, I should be able to transfer the license from my laptop to my new computer, right?

I can't wait!
It comes right when my exams finish so I can spend as long as I want mucking about with this thing.
Nah, I bought it afterwards, the laptop's OEM OS was Vista.

What's the big draw for those things, anyway? What will your mucking about consist of, for example?
may not be true but looks like those who have gotten their hands on say it's a beast. If this thing goes for $349 I'll scream out my window in joy. Needless to say I'm buying the second I see it hit Newegg.
Asus P8Z77-V mobo
Intel i5 3570k
Sapphire Radeon HD 7850 2GB
OCZ Agility 3 120GB
Corsair Carbide 300R
A fun experience despite how stressful it all was. Stock cooler because I couldn't get the CM Hyper TX3 Evo (which remains a ridiculous name) to sit, will be calling CS after the bank holiday.
The 7850 is a monster card, overclocked mine to 1235/1460 which is just incredible performance for the price.

I'd recommend the 7850 over the 7870, as right out the box with just AMD's CCC you can push the 7850 to 1050 beating the 7870's stock values. When OCed to the same values with a program like Sapphire's Trixx the difference is something like 5-10%, which I don't think is really worth £75.
The Carbide 300R was easy to work in so I'm sure the 500R will be even better, especially if it has a bit more space behind the mobo (I er, managed to break a bit off a SATA connector trying to force everything in there >.>).
Youre looking for a new motherboard but you havent decided on what processor you want to get?
Depends on your budget and intended use.
Realistically, something like the i5 2500k (or the 3570k) and a P67/Z68/Z77 board will be just fine, but if you dont do stuff that really requires a quadcore and/or you dont care about overclocking you could step it down to an i3.

Cheap, solid performance, no frills.
1155 is by no means going to last forever, but if you want to SLI youre going to have to go with either a P67, Z68 or Z77 board. The P67 and Z68 are pretty similar except most (all?) Z68 boards can use Ivy Bridge chips, while the Z77 is made for Ivy Bridge and I think has PCI 3.0 (whereas only some Z68 boards do and I dont think any P67 boards do). For what you want, PCI 3.0 doesnt matter (unless you plan on SLIing with 2 new cards as opposed to just grabbing another 550ti).
Youre reusing the Dell case right? If thats so then Im not sure what will fit, since sometimes theyll use proprietary sizes.
The case is one of the ones that someone pictured earlier, and I will probably reuse it, unless I see something that really grabs my attention.

I pointed him at two options: a ridiculously cheap build based off of an ASROCK H61 and a G850 (shipped and with 4GB of RAM this comes in at under $180!) or a less than ridiculously cheap build based off of an ASROCK Z75 and an i3 2100. He's a smart guy so I laid out the downsides to each board and told him he could mix-and-match. Anyone have any concerns with this advice?
System will be for gaming only, we're targetting for Battlefield 3 and he's a tech savvy guy but I don't believe he's interested in overclocking, nor can I forsee him doing anything crazy like running two video cards, or a RAID0 array or anything like that.
EDIT: as EMP123 pointed out, I probably should've reccommended the 2120, and so I've made an addendum to the e-mail I sent him. $5 for 200mhz seems like a good deal to me.
I did not know that, thanks!
A friend of mine is going to use an employee discount for me, so I think I'm going to get
i7-3770
Intel(R) SSD 180 GB 520 Series
through him,
then pick up the RAM, Motherboard (suggestions?), Fan, and PSU through newegg and I should be building this bad boy within the month. My god.......it'll be glorious.

So apparently it's on its way. That's silly.

Oh if you think I'm not pricing out a cheap-as-dirt system based around an X3 455 right now...
That may be my thinly veiled excuse. I'm amazed at how much horsepower you can get in the low end these days. Even the G series Pentiums seem like they can hang, and the last time I bought a MOBO/RAM/CPU for under $200 was never.
Yeah, its pretty surprising what you can get for super cheap. My first HTPC was put together for like $500, about 200 of which was spent on the mobo/cpu/ram. However, I should have spent more on the mobo (although its still kicking, my grandmother uses it for email and stuff) since I ended up with a Biostar board that makes me weep.
I hate living paycheck to paycheck, I need to get a job that can fund my lust for Ivybridge-E and SLI'd 690s...

making it $269.99 that I didn't take advantage of.
So I thought I'd throw that out there for anyone looking at it...

(Not trying to nit pick...just that your case is an airflow nightmare with all that jammed in there. A good case with cable management would clean that up right quick).

Thumbs up.
If you can pick up one of the upcoming mid-range Kepler cards, maybe, but that's pretty much all that's on the horizon.
