Furthermore, they're trying to tell college students "HURR HURR OBAMA HATES YOU," and women "HURR HURR OBAMA HATES YOU." Quite fascinating, trying to pit the presidents major demographics against each other. Of course, there are female college students.

The GOP has spent four years trying to enact horrible policies and actively hurting the country (forcing sequestration and causing a false crisis that lowered our credit rating) and now they're saying all of these things were Obama's fault.

It makes me want to punch a kitten. And I love kittens.

Not the best rationale IMO. If you tax them their profits aren't going to change that much. One of the resident econs can correct me on that if I'm wrong.

Anyways I was just pointing out that repealing these subsidies will hurt the renewables industry far more than it will hurt Big Oil.

Sorry for the brevity im on my phone.

I fucked up and didn't quote in my last post. Unknown had provided a link describing the energy subsidies. $1b of the $4b goes to a much smaller renewables industry. Repeal the subsidies and you take away a larger portion relative to industry size from businesses that are much less likely to be able to simply raise prices to compensate.

Right, which is why nobody said anything about repealing all the subsidies, just the ones to companies that already make hundreds of billions a year.

Haha so call it a special oil tax then if that's what people want. And don't link me something that talks about all energy subsidies and cite me a $4b number when the real number is $300m.

I'm sorry, removing a subsidy is not the same as a tax, and we definitely give them more than $300 million a year.

    What?
The total value of Federal subsidies to oil, natural gas, coal, and nuclear power is estimated to be $2.8 billion in 1999

    That's not, uhhhh, $300mil

I think Sir Landshark has fallen victim to the GOP framing of 'everything that makes one pay more is a tax or increase in taxes'. Lower taxes has proven a winning narrative for them, so they apply it to everything.

Also the least you could do is read the very report I linked you to. I actually had to spend an extra 20 seconds on Google to get through all the partisan bullshit so as not to give you numbers directly from a petroleum lobbying firm.

Romney supporter suggests Obama be tried for treason, Romney doesn't disagree.
EUCLID, Ohio — Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney didn’t comment on a supporter’s assertion that President Barack Obama should be tried for treason at a town hall event here.

A woman in the audience expressed dismay that Obama was “operating outside the Constitution,” then said Obama should be tried for treason for violating separation of powers.

“I do believe he should be tried for treason,” she said to applause from the audience.

Romney replied that “I happen to believe that the Constitution was not just brilliant, but that it was inspired, and so was the Declaration of Independence,” avoiding the woman’s comment.

Your GOP voters and candidate, everyone. Tip your waitress.

Oh, seriously Romney, that's a fucking lame retort, even for you.

"The President has violated the Constitution and the Separation of Powers! He's committing treason!"
"How exactly is he doing that? What the hell are you talking about? I mean, there are plenty of valid reasons to not support Obama, but accusing him of treason? Get some perspective, people. Seriously." "Yeah, the Constitution is awesome."

It just may be a little bit worse than that:

Speaking with Republicans like my parents is an exercise in frustration, especially my dad.

Somehow we got talking about the 9/11 First Responders health care act, and he said that if they closed the tax loopholes that would have funded it, all of the businesses and rich people would just leave the United States immediately.

He's also under the impression that, somehow, the sub-prime mortgages were the only reason for this economic disaster we're in, and not the 41 trillion dollar debt-based phantom economy that was created after deregulation.

This is the GOP base. I love my pops, but he's so far out of touch right now it's kind of sad.

there's still a pretty amazingly low level of understanding of the causes of the recently financial mess. I guess because it's a complicated topic that even the best observers don't have a complete grip on, but still.
