so whats the average battery life of these things? when it shorts, do i need to buy a new one or do they replace it for free?

It will short out just as you go to login when the servers come up.

I have had the same one for abouuuuuuut 4 or 5 years now, I think. Haven't had any problems with that one.
Then I got one from Blizzcon 2011 and that thing died after like 6 weeks. Crap shoot.

I don't have any experience with Blizzard's authenticator, but I used to do IT support for a large bank that used authenticators. Desynching was a thing that could happen from time to time, it was extremely easy to fix. Like a simple 5 minute phone call. I'd imagine it would be similar with Blizzard.

Yeah, that used to be a worry, but maybe a year ago(?) they added a feature where the authenticator app can give you a restore code. That way, if you get a new phone or have to reset your phone, or the app update breaks, you can enter the code into the app so that you can still access your account using the "same authenticator".
Just have to make sure to save the restore code in a safe place.
I think it'd be closer described as the private key (since blizzard only needs the serial number to attach the authenticator, but the serial number isn't adequate enough to restore an authenticator).
It is like a public key to unlock your PKI dongle...
