I don't get why people should have the right to vote on marriage law, honestly. Seems like a coward's way out for state legislatures.

Federalism at this point in history is basically 'we want to get away with some crazy shit in our state for decades longer than we would otherwise be able to anywhere else'.

I get that, but even on the state level, this is a coward's way out. There's nothing about marriage that should be up for a vote. It's a really weird distinction.

Frankly, "marriage" at the civil level should be across the board for everyone, let individual churches decide if they want to be bigots. As per the Constitution, religious based law has no place in the public square.

Sorry religious right, thanks for playing.

I should take this opportunity to say that I'd love to see gay marriage be a non-issue in voting preference - it would enable committed activists to move the ball far downfield while eliminating the apparent Republican need to pander to what is becoming a smaller and smaller fringe.
The problem with the republican party is that it's painted itself into a corner with regards to the "fringe" (I would describe it as the base to be honest), and can't "move the ball downfield" without losing essential voting blocks.

Basically the only way you can act as a government schill for big business while remaining in offices is by appealing to people's emotions and stupidity on freaking non-government related issues ("values" "gays" "abortion" "immugrunts takin our way uf lyf") and so forth and then try to talk about how big business is part of these holy values.

I am a conservative Christian, but I haven't touched the Republican part in around 8 years; their values are rarely different from Democrats, and their actions are frequently evil (or more evil when you have two evils).

The black vote has been permanently lost to the Republican party after you know they took the knife to the back of "The Party of Lincoln" and let in a bunch of out and out racists.

You'd think time would have dampened this, but you'd be wrong.

Turns out people aren't idiots, and look out for their interests.

Well, that and reminding them of how much you hate them on a regular basis.

Considering all the things they have called the president in the last 4 years. All the code worded digs and dog whistles slams. The "Foodstamp President" anyone? I would be surprised that Romney gets more then 10% AND I think Black Mormons and idiots that pull the wrong lever will be a big part of his 10%.

The sky was full of stars, every star an exploding ship. One of ours.

Do these people not understand how debt works? You can have a loan of $10,000 and set to pay it back at $200/month, and if you earn extra money in a given month that means you have a surplus that month while still being in debt

    Unless I'm the one misunderstanding

No, that's exactly what's happening. The issue is that morons don't understand the debt and deficit aren't the same thing. The secondary problem is that these are the same exact people who will be screaming for tax cuts the very second we start running a budgetary surplus again while simultaneously screaming about how the national debt is going to rape our children while they sleep.

I stand corrected in re Bush and black support! At least partially - I'd like to see the state-by-state breakdown if you have it to hand because opposition to gay marriage is stronger across the board in the south, including in black communities.

The best I can find for you EB is the slate article I already linked to, which showed both a strong surge in black participation in CA and a concurrent surge in support for prop 8. When you have a nontrivial cohort of new voters who support you and oppose gay marriage enough to vote for a ban, it's at least reasonable to conclude that gay marriage might factor into the political identity of that cohort.

Is it enough of a factor to cause that cohort to vote Romney? I'm going to guess no. Is it enough to turn them lukewarm on Obama and depress turnout, or at least contribute to a weakening of enthusiasm? I'm going to guess yes.

Gee, why would black turnout have been up in November of 2008? It must have been prop 8, right?

Historically speaking, black voters will vote for Democrats and vote against gay marriage (though not more than white people when controlled for religion, just more than most Democrats). This is not particularly surprising! It's also changing rapidly, though here I think black people's general underrepresentation in media is hurting even more than usual. I made a joke the first time I watched The Wire that there were more gay black characters in that show's first season than the rest of television history. It wasn't that much of an exaggeration.

So, were Biden's remarks in support of the gay community a calculated attempt at courting that community, even as the Obama administration attempts to distance themselves from his comments?

That's not a trap question, by the way. I legitimately don't know how to answer that myself, and recognize the wisdom of couching progressive policymaking as a typical "Biden gaffe."

I love how all the media is now trying to spin what Biden said about "We were the problem" in relation to Iran getting nukes. He apparently said by cutting ourselves off from diplomacy with the rest of the world that was bad. But of course in the media, it's all "BLAME AMERICA!!!!"

This is absolutely awesome. I love it for itself, I love it for the political tactics involved, I love it.
It's got so many things going on!
Romney can now either agree with him killing his base support, disagree with him and look like a complete bigot to anyone else, or scream "foul! WAR ON MARRIAGE!" about it and look like a childish fool.

And speaking of support, it begs the question, then, of how much electoral support Obama would have gained or lost had he not been a fence riding "civil union" candidate in 2008?

Who knows? Acceptance of Gay Marriage has shifted drammatically in just the last few years. It's encouraging to finally see some progress being made nationally. The President endorsing it is a huge deal.

It really is a good sign. Saying "I support gay marriage" is a gigantic screw you to Republicans, and may be a sign that from now on he'll be waiting for them to find some moderates and come compromise with him on the left rather than cutting himself to death trying to compromise with them on the far right. Hell, to assure me of this fact he just needs to say that he believes in evolution, and propose a measure banning the teaching of intelligent design nationwide due to it being lies.

Its also worth pointing out that it was reported that he was for same-sex marriage in an IMPACT (Illinois’ Gay and Lesbian Political Action Organization) political survey when he ran for the IL senate back in '96. That is assuming he actually filled that out and not some staffer.

Intelligent design is by default a theory that is based around a "higher power", whether it be God, aliens, or the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

It should not be taught in our schools, or at the very least not be made a required class.

However, the tolerance our founding fathers showed towards other religions is probably something that should be further explored.
