Federalism at this point in history is basically 'we want to get away with some crazy shit in our state for decades longer than we would otherwise be able to anywhere else'.
I get that, but even on the state level, this is a coward's way out. There's nothing about marriage that should be up for a vote. It's a really weird distinction.
Frankly, "marriage" at the civil level should be across the board for everyone, let individual churches decide if they want to be bigots. As per the Constitution, religious based law has no place in the public square.
Sorry religious right, thanks for playing.
You make me want to puke.
All with your...Constitution.
Basically the only way you can act as a government schill for big business while remaining in offices is by appealing to people's emotions and stupidity on freaking non-government related issues ("values" "gays" "abortion" "immugrunts takin our way uf lyf") and so forth and then try to talk about how big business is part of these holy values.
I am a conservative Christian, but I haven't touched the Republican part in around 8 years; their values are rarely different from Democrats, and their actions are frequently evil (or more evil when you have two evils).

It's like you don't understand that the Constitution is obviously only for real people. You know, not.... them.
Well, that and reminding them of how much you hate them on a regular basis.
Considering all the things they have called the president in the last 4 years. All the code worded digs and dog whistles slams. The "Foodstamp President" anyone? I would be surprised that Romney gets more then 10% AND I think Black Mormons and idiots that pull the wrong lever will be a big part of his 10%.
Fucking socialist, this should have happened ages ago

Gee, why would black turnout have been up in November of 2008? It must have been prop 8, right?
Historically speaking, black voters will vote for Democrats and vote against gay marriage (though not more than white people when controlled for religion, just more than most Democrats). This is not particularly surprising! It's also changing rapidly, though here I think black people's general underrepresentation in media is hurting even more than usual. I made a joke the first time I watched The Wire that there were more gay black characters in that show's first season than the rest of television history. It wasn't that much of an exaggeration.
Fuckin hell those are some dumb people. My mind can't even wrap around the kind of stupid some of these people have to be. How do they get online? How do they type at all?

That's not a trap question, by the way. I legitimately don't know how to answer that myself, and recognize the wisdom of couching progressive policymaking as a typical "Biden gaffe."
Eh. Isn't USPS's problem more due to the fact that Republicans made them fund their pension funds 70 years in advance than anything else?
Yup.
It's the slow movement towards their actual positions that they frustratingly don't believe they can say out loud yet. Though based on North Carolina yesterday...
sigh.
EDIT: Or I'm wrong. VERY breaking news, from ABC. Obama's completed his evolution on gay marriage.
EDIT: It's live on ABC, actually.
Come on Prez. This man can't beat you. It's time to get cocky and be the progressive leader Americans thought they were voting for back in 2008.
It's got so many things going on!
Romney can now either agree with him killing his base support, disagree with him and look like a complete bigot to anyone else, or scream "foul! WAR ON MARRIAGE!" about it and look like a childish fool.
Pretty much his whole campaign was about bipartisanship, dude.
He could stand to be less rambly about civil rights, but I think I've grown fond of the way he meanders to a conclusion.

I'd love to hear about how all this went down behind closed doors, but we'll probably have to wait a while, unfortunately. I'm hoping it was a calculated fake gaffe to test the waters.
I would support that edit.
And speaking of support, it begs the question, then, of how much electoral support Obama would have gained or lost had he not been a fence riding "civil union" candidate in 2008?
Who knows? Acceptance of Gay Marriage has shifted drammatically in just the last few years. It's encouraging to finally see some progress being made nationally. The President endorsing it is a huge deal.
he has to be trolling the religious right at this point
If he were, he would have spelled it "evilution"

Man, he's really rustling the GOP's jimmies.
It really is a good sign. Saying "I support gay marriage" is a gigantic screw you to Republicans, and may be a sign that from now on he'll be waiting for them to find some moderates and come compromise with him on the left rather than cutting himself to death trying to compromise with them on the far right. Hell, to assure me of this fact he just needs to say that he believes in evolution, and propose a measure banning the teaching of intelligent design nationwide due to it being lies.
Its also worth pointing out that it was reported that he was for same-sex marriage in an IMPACT (Illinois’ Gay and Lesbian Political Action Organization) political survey when he ran for the IL senate back in '96. That is assuming he actually filled that out and not some staffer.
No, I am not really communist. Yes, it is weird that I use this name.
Intelligent design is by default a theory that is based around a "higher power", whether it be God, aliens, or the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
It should not be taught in our schools, or at the very least not be made a required class.
However, the tolerance our founding fathers showed towards other religions is probably something that should be further explored.
Just... don't.

It's bringing out the best in people.
I say this is a great thing: Fire up the bigots and watch the independents flee the right.
There are pretty much 5 categories for comments I've read so far:
1. Support
2. Support, but criticism that he's done this just to earn votes
3. Outrage
4. Outrage with racism included as a bonus
5. Outrage with homophobia included as a bonus
And sometimes 4 and 5 combined
