I'd consider changing the color of the author's name. The white letters on white girls gets lost. Also, I think I prefer the smaller individual titles.

    Titles are hard

I'm in the process of editing my short story (didn't post it yet) for submission to a competition on Monday, and trying to come up with a good title is pretty difficult.

Any thoughts on these two or others in similar vein? A Quiet Exit or A Dead Ringer

Those sound a bit trite, but it depends on the story.

“Hic non defectus est, sed cattus minxit desuper nocte quadam. Confundatur pessimus cattus qui minxit super librum istum in nocte Daventrie, et consimiliter omnes alii propter illum. Et cavendum valde ne permittantur libri aperti per noctem ubi cattie venire possunt.”

Well, just submitted my short story to the contest. Supposed to find out in September whether or not I win.

Feels good to have finally completed a piece though!

Not to be a whiner who wants to bend the rules for his own gain, but linking to offsite stuff is sometimes necessary when you're asking for crits on something over 10k words.

I'm not a mod (well, here at least), but I think public domain work no longer counts as fan fiction. Aside from the fact that 101% of fan fiction is terrible, the real problem with it is that it cross copyright boundaries.

Sherlock going down on sweet, sweet Dr. Twatson still violates the "no erotica" clause, though.

Is there any clear line between commercial fiction and literary fiction?

  • ElJeffeElJeffe Super Moderator, Moderator, ClubPA mod
As best I can tell, not really. "Literary fiction" allegedly can have a weaker narrative arc, but I think it probably boils down to marketability.

The cliche I've heard is that commercial fiction is more plot driven and literary fiction is more character driven.

So if my fantasy story is heavily character driven, I can call it 'literary fantasy' right?

presumably literary fiction has a more elaborate or profound "purpose," in terms of theme, of structure, of concept; it is doing something more than "just" telling a story, and the reader is motivated to engage the piece on that level rather than read to discover how the narrative unfolds. The plot isn't necessarily weaker, but it is presumably less important than in commercial fiction.

The distinction is pretty vague in terms of what ends up on the shelf, which is usually just fiction that doesn't fit in a particular genre or is written by an author with critical academic acclaim.

Literary fiction is something that critics like, and commercial fiction is everything else, especially genre fiction.

hey @Ruzkin I co-write a thing with a person in the UK, and we are talking idly about putting it into a kindle collection type thing, and I was wondering -- is it possible for her to upload and sell an edition on kindle at amazon.uk, and me to upload and sell a slightly different edition on kindle at amazon.com (to avoid having to do accounting to split the monies after the fact).

    Hey Amalia,
Yes, when you upload a book you can select where that publication will be available region-by-region. This is expressedly so you can upload different editions for UK/US/Spanish markets. Make sure you get the US edition though, you'll sell twice as much as her (unless she's a hard working marketer)
