MechWarrior 5: What's the Scoop?
MechWarrior 5 is a reboot of the classic MechWarrior franchise. It's NOT a MechAssault game, it's a MechWarrior game, which means simulation, customization, blowing off limbs, heatsinks, and a robot female voice playing while you sit inside your mech cockpit furiously pressing buttons to stop your ammunition from exploding while your lancemates fire volleys of 20 missiles into an unending stream of giant enemy robots that are trying to kill you with lasers.

MechWarrior 5 is actually MechWarrior Online, though. It's a free to play MMO that will follow (in real time) the Clan invasion of the Inner Sphere, which is a thing. We don't know much yet but here is the website.

I Played MechAssault on my XBOX and It Was Boring. Why do I Care About This?
Yo fuck MechAssault. MechWarrior is a venerable franchise that, as far as videogames go, dates back to MechWarrior, which was fun but was made before graphics were invented, MechWarrior 2, which was sweet but mostly just a prelude to MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries, which is one of the best games ever made. MechWarrior 3 was by all accounts sort of fun and MechWarrior 4 was mostly just a prelude to MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries, which was also pretty sweet and which is FREE TO DOWNLOAD FOR EVERYONE! The MechWarrior games are simulations and damn good ones, too. There aren't too many complicated buttons but there are enough, and the HUD ends up looking a bit like an F-14's HUD looks like if the F-14 was designed to blow off the legs of an enemy F-14. With lasers.

I Just CAN'T GET ENOUGH MECH STUFF!
Oookay, well, you've got a few options.

MechCommander
MechCommander and MechCommander 2 are free. They're pretty fun; you basically load out your 'mechs and command them in battle. They're pretty good recreations of the MechWarrior games, actually. Certainly worth a look if you enjoy strategy and mechs.

MechWarrior 4
MechWarrior 4 is free too. MekTek, which released tons of awesome mech "paks" and stuff for the game, has been given the rights to release it because god loves MechWarrior and is smiling on us fans or something. The free version comes with MekPak 3.1 which adds even more stuff and adds the new 'mechs into single player. This is probably the best MechWarrior single player experience right now.

MechWarrior: Living Legends
Living Legends is a kickass Crysis Wars MechWarrior mod. It's almost professional quality. The graphics are stupendous and they've done more than just add 'mechs: you get a bunch of the air vehicles and ground vehicles, too, plus Elementals if you're silly enough NOT to want to pilot a giant walking tank. The mod is multiplayer only and it even has Solaris arena matches in there. Definitely check this out if you have Crysis Wars, because it's free (as long as you own Crysis Wars, duh). Here is the Penny Arcade forum thread for this game.

MechWarrior 2
MechWarrior 2 is not free but if you own a copy already (like, say, MW2: Mercenaries woooo) you can get it running on Windows XP (and Vista and 7?) with MechVM. Install MechVM, put your CD in, and tell MechVM to install from the CD. Bada-bing, it runs fine. I'm playing Mercenaries right now and I'm stuck on an early level where I have to escort some people to a prison that the AI keeps blowing up in order to make me lose. An alternative is to use MW2hook which works pretty well but is a bit of work to figure out.

MechWarrior 3
MechWarrior3.org should have everything you need to get up and running with the worst game in the series since MechWarrior 1. That said, it's still a pretty good game. I don't think there's ever been a bad MechWarrior game really.

I would've gladly just quoted this from the old thread, but apparently we can't quote stuff out of closed threads? Whatever.

Anyway, a work in progress image for an Assjammers logo:

This is awesome, but be aware that it's looking very busy for a logo. If you actually want to make something that can be used as a decal or clan insignia or something, it's probably gonna have to be much simpler.

Yeah, but it'll be easier to pick what to keep when I can see the whole thing at once. Could just boil down to the Hunchback cannon with the ass of the ass sticking out.

I've played a couple mech games before, but I have no excuse to not check out Mechwarrior 4 now that it's free. Looks like fun and I hope MechWarrior Online turns out alright. But I'm skeptical when a franchise that has been dormant pops back up as a F2P game.

Loved Mechwarrior back in the day, tried some of the spinoffs but they never really hooked me quite as much. The graphics for the new one look great, and I'm hoping that the game will continue in the simulationist feel of other Mechwarrior games. (Unlike some other mech games that seem to be going for more pure-action.)

I do hope they figure out a solution to deal with legging though - It's ok if it's a tactic, but it shouldn't necessarily be the go-to solution.

Take the ass end of the donkey and have an autocannon coming out of it.

Should we really be calling Mechwarrior 3 the worst game of the series in the op? I know you say it's still a good game right afterwards but it still paints it in kind of a shitty light.

When it first released from MekTek it was a pain in 5 different asses to get it running. Don't know if that's still the case.

Last time I tried the MekTek release it was pretty painless. I'd imagine these days it'll be even easier to get going if they kept working on it.

SO is there a separate MW:T thread I don't have bookmarked or what?

If not, then that sweet OP is lacking in some more love...

That's...a good question. Should we just make this into the SUMMER OF MECHWARRIOR general thread? It's pretty much going to be the exact same people talking in both threads anyway.

That's good to hear. I would never want to attempt to reinstall it if the situation were the same.

I've thought about either making a MW:T thread or folding some MW:T into the OP. I'm kind indifferent between the two choices and have not done either because I've been too lazy but if I had a choice I'd probably choose a brand new thread for MW:T. And in fact I'll go make one right now. I WILL RETURN.

Well I'm ancient by most Internet yardsticks so I played plenty of the pen and paper versions. I tried to get the original version (when it was called Battledroids before the Lucasfilm hammer came down) when it came out, but being a poor student (high school) I had to settle for the original Battletech boxed set (well before the removal of the 'Harmony Gold' mechs). Ah, memories.

I first heard about Mechwarrior when the clix game came out. I desperately wanted to play it, but I was a poor kid so I never got to. Then I found out about the super nintendo games and played those for a while. I have yet to try classic Battletech.

I first was exposed to Mechwarrior when we got a free copy of MW2 with a new PC.

Mercs basically defined my childhood. I read all the Battletech novels around 5th-6th grade. Had a bunch of the cards, but never played the game. I did play the tabletop a bit with my brothers, but it's so deep and we had trouble keeping track of all the little rules.

Hopefully they have a decal system at least as good as AC:V's or in an ideal world as great as APB's/Forza's.

It's been confirmed in a Dev Diary that custom insignias aren't going to be included (at least initially) due to the legal minefield it tends to spawn.

Doesn't mean we can't adopt of the name of the "101th Assjammers" or whatever

What they need to do is just create a custom decal maker in the game itself. Sort of like the banner maker in Shogun 2, or the guild insignia creator in WoW. Then you can let people create custom insignias all day for their clans and nobody gets sued. Sure, its bland compared to the olden days of Mechwarrior Yore, but it would be a decent compromise.
