About time to move onto colour I think!

  • NicNic Registered User
Lewis, I like the "fish eye" curvilinear perspective you have going there, but I think you need to push the contrast a bit more and clean up your values, some of your gradients are a bit muddy.

Also are you working according to a grid setup, or are you trying to eyeball the fisheye perspective? I think there's a bit more you can do to improve the arc of the perspective towards the center.

It's a very ambitious piece, and a fantastic idea, I applaud this line of thinking so keep it up!

    Edit: punktuashun :B

Here are some spaceship thumbnails I have done recently. I already painted #F as 30x48' oil on canvas, which I am also posting. Also the orange painting I was working on before.
I think I am going to paint #B next.

I love the thumbs. I think it's because the crisp edges on the ships really make them pop against the more smudgy backgrounds. It's a pity that effect gets a little lost in the paints. It seems like your canvases are quite large, have you considered going in to some of the areas with a really tiny brush, to give some cleaner lines and detail contrast against the great background swathes?

  • rtsrts Registered User regular
Well, that's the idea. Easier said than done and all that of course. Working large means working on canvas. I don't really want to invest in linen for a painting this size so that means the texture is pretty extreme and small details can be difficult. Though I have a new technique in mind for this coming painting and we'll see how it works soon enough.

  • tynictynic Registered User, ClubPA regular
Yeah that's fair. I figured you were aiming for that effect but I wasn't sure to what extent you'd achieved the look you wanted vs being hampered by physical issues.

I do like the colours you're using, too.

Thanks menace. For my thumbnails I just use a .5 mechanical pencil with HB or 2B depending on what I have at the time. To cover large areas and get texture quickly I usually break of a chunk of the lead and scrub it into the paper on it's side with my finger.

Here is the current state of the comp for the next painting:

I'm surprised you're not finding an audience for these, they're really appealing. Maybe you need to tap in to a nerdier customer base.

  • rtsrts Registered User regular
I wouldn't expect to have any work yet. I have done all of three paintings, and while I am happy with them I also know that I can do better. But in my experience at illustration conventions and by talking to other art collectors it seems like in general science fiction work is less popular with collectors than fantasy. But there is also a lot more competition in fantasy, so it may not be as bad as it seems.

    Spoiler:

I'm a fan of the neon yellow going away. feel like you could even take the saturation down a few notches still on the tiny ship. Your "F" painting is fun because of the slow realization of scale; the same principle can work here as well, but you'd need to downplay the focus on the foreground ship to tell the story of how awesome that really cool citything is. There's also the interesting play of wow that ship is tiny in comparison to that city which is tiny in comparison to that holy crap is that a sun - but that could get lost if the foreground ship draws too heavily.

Those thumbs though? Glorious. It's like looking at the world through an f .95 lens all the time, but with more ...spaceships. Is the tiny one going to be the same across all of these paintings? That'd make a pretty neat travelogue series, or spaceliner ad.

the comp is really interesting how it is right now.. just refine the edges on the foreground buildings and push the atmosphere on the purple ones. The texture is really nice.

  • rtsrts Registered User regular
Thanks man. Keeping the texture in the painting itself is a bit of a struggle but I am going to do my best.

The body itself looks good, if a little long maybe, the chest itself... or the thorax, may look a bit short compared to the abdominals... also his lower legs are reaaaaally short
