so are the netherlands eliminated already or not, if first tie breaker is head to head, so they can't beat denmark, wha'ts the deal?

The Dutch are in it via a 3-way tie for 2nd in the group. If the Netherlands beat Portugal and Germany beats Denmark, NED/POR/DEN all finish at 3 points and the head-to-head is even at 1 win 1 loss between the three teams. Then it comes down to goal differential, and the Dutch would advance with a 2 goal win over Portugal (and with Germany defeating Denmark)

Wouldn't the goal differential change, if Denmark loses? I think NED advances if they beat Portugal with a 2 goal lead or more, and Germany defeats Denmark. Still, it's looking very grim for the Netherlands this time.

The first set of tie breaking criteria for the Euros only takes into account goal differentials involving the teams that are tied. So, in group B if Denmark, Holland and Portugal ended up at 3 points, their results vs Germany wouldnt matter at first. It's the same reason why Russia would have finished above Greece has the Czechs also finished at 4 points, but in a two way tie with Greece, they finished below them since Greece outscored them.

So, let's say Germany defeats Denmark 2:0 (or higher). Would the Netherlands advance with a win against Portugal? Or do they have to win by a certain margin?

AFAICT if Denmark loses by 2 goals or more, they would have a goal differential of -2. If NED defeats POR by 1 goal, they'd have the same goal differential.

Netherlands have to win by two goals and Germany has to win in order for Netherlands to advance.

Here this is from the UEFA website
(also explains the other groups as well)

    http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuro/news/newsid=1818000.html#group+permutations+explained
    Denmark (3) v Germany (6), Portugal (3) v Netherlands (0)

    • Germany are not quite through, but will be as group winners (meaning a match against Greece in Gdansk) if they draw. They will be knocked out, though, if they lose to Denmark by any result other than a one-goal defeat in which Germany score at least two AND Portugal win.

    • Denmark will progress with any win. A draw will only be good enough if Portugal lose. If Denmark lose they are out.

    • Portugal will be through with victory unless Denmark win by a one-goal margin (other than 2-1 and 1-0). They will progress with a draw unless Denmark win. Portugal will also be through if they lose by a one-goal margin and Denmark are also beaten.

    • The Netherlands must win by a two-goal margin and hope Denmark also lose to finish second and take on the Czech Republic in Warsaw.

Even though Ronaldo could have 3 or 4 today, he has easily been the best player on the pitch today. Has just been fun to watch.

So, if Denmark score they go through at Germany's expense... I wouldn't bet against Bendtner getting that goal.

Just disappointed by the Netherlands. They are better than this!

They had the toughest group, beat the Dutch, almost got a result against Portugal, and won't be last in the group. The acquitted themselves well, and came close when nobody expected much from them. Nothing to be sad about.

  • ProfsProfs Registered User
Yeah...just totally baffled by the Dutch. Having the best attacking side (on a player-by-player basis) in every game (arguably in the tournament), and they net 2 goals total...How the hell does that happen?

  • oldmankenoldmanken Registered User regular
The same problem the Dutch always have... they are a collection of individuals, not a team.

Sneijder is the only one who seemed to get this and was the Netherlands best player all tournament by miles.

I hate Ronaldo, but he really shone in that match. Unlucky for him to not get a hattrick.

  • MuppetmanMuppetman Registered User regular
VdV was the only shining light in that Dutch team for me tonight - so very, very poor. I think it was probably the shock of Robben passing the ball that did it.

    steam_sig.png
  • oldmankenoldmanken Registered User regular
Robben shouldn't be anywhere near that team, as he is the epitome of the selfishness that characterizes the squad.

An Irish broadcaster just showed a really depressing interview with St Ledger talking about how soul crushing the Spain defeat was.

    Now I have a sad.
